Perhaps I should have posted "Was Ben, then, a lesser being, *in your opinion*, than Warren?". This is how I, personally, look at it:

I think that, were I in Giles' shoes, I probably would have done what he did. Ben had the choice early on of getting Dawn back to Buffy and helping to fight the good fight. Glory offered immortality, and the di was cast.

Giles knew that Buffy wouldn't kill Ben. He quite clinically decided that what Buffy couldn't do, he would. In killing Ben, he prevented Glory from returning, and possibly finding a way to destroy the whole world. I don't think he had a choice. Whether this could have been proven to the satisfaction of the police and/or others, we'll never know.

Warren, on the other hand, really wants to be "a Glory", in my opinion. Not a god, necessarily, but certainly someone with all the power. And he doesn't much care what he does on his way to get it.

I can only go by the spoilers I've read, so prefer not to say much about Willow's actions until I've seen that actual episode, with all it's nuances. I will say, though, that the spoilers would indicate that Willow is not in a sane frame of mind when she goes after her love's murderer. As for the "torture" that's been mentioned, I would imagine, personally, that she isn't stringing him up and hot-pokering him, a la Marcus, but rather giving him a little taste of his own medicine. That's pure speculation on my part, though. I'll wait and see.

Whether or not one agrees that human life should not be taken by any of the Scooby Gang, one cannot, I think, look at the Warren and Ben as identical cases. The baby Ben had no choice in being used as a vessel. He did, however, have a choice in adulthood. Warren, I think, right from the start had choices, and chose the wrong path every time. He knew exactly what he was doing, and apparently is pretty powerful himself, in a not-so-human way, when Willow goes after him. So I think a lot can be forgiven, in her case.
