Well, the fact is that nations do cause death and dying. By their very nature, nations separate themselves from other nations. They do this geographically, ideologically, theologically, and culturally. Within any type of human division of groups lies a sleeping need to do violence upon other groups. The existence of differing ideologies is perceived as a direct threat and challenge to any other ideologies that might be out there.

When groups split apart, they say without saying, "Our group is different and will survive better than your group, even if that means killing your group". I did much studying on Nationalism as an undergrad and as a grad, and the more I studied, the more this need for violence became evident. So, John Lennon was right on when he said removing division will also bring peace. A dream? Yes, but he admits to this in the song!

To say that Imagine is a commie bunch of rhetoric is not terribly apt. The only line that could possibly be taken in this way is "no possessions..." Yet, what would we fight over, if we all owned nothing?

Your failure to put value upon dreams of this sort is indicative of a clinging to pragmatism, yet are not dreams and ideals necessary? Are they not what makes us, essentially, human? And, did not Jesus preach much the same? Were his teachings, then, communistic and overly-sentimental? Did he not preach not to gather up for tomorrow, behold the birds and beasts of the field? Would he not believe in brotherhood and sharing the world?

Perhaps I am missing the point, but I see nothing wrong with dreaming for peace and love and sharing and nothing to fight for. To achieve anything even remotely like this, we must dream it first...
