It is a mistake to say that there is not one American culture. You are right to say that there are subcultures, but these only make up the mother culture, which is based on a certain ideology/mythology. Culture is about things that define us, things that we can all relate to, and in some sense believe in. These definitions are general in nature, but this is how they have to exist. Some characteristics of American culture are:

Over-emphasis on sex and money. Fight for freedom. Worship entertainers. Eat out. Rock and roll all night, party every day. American Pride. Advertise, advertise, advertise. Emphasis on individuality. Emphasis on privacy. Trust in god. Pride in our power and military. Emphasis on individual rights. Patriotism. Work hard. Progress.

And the list goes on. These are all characteristics of the mother culture. Sure, we do not all share every single trait, but we all have some of them in common and admit that these are the things, in a sense, that America stands for.
