I think Vince's point, which you never addressed, was that the bible can be much compared to your history examples. It is faulty. It is flawed. It is incomplete. It is written by men hundreds of years after the fact. Are we even talking about the same John? I am not sure that the John who wrote the gospel was actually with Jesus when he died.

The point is, the bible is a book. Putting your faith in some hereafter based upon a book is quite ludicrous. If I told you that I had a friend that was the son of god, had been slain and resurrected, you would have me committed. So, how then is the bible any different? I will tell you how. It is belief, that is all. You believe it to be different, therefore it is. Yet, your belief makes no more sense than my belief that my friend is the son of god. Both are absurd.

When we cling to these notions, we deny life! We make up rules that govern our actions so that we can achieve some vague intangible la-la land after death, and by doing so restrict the only thing we really and ultimately KNOW, and that is our own life as it is right now. No man needs a book to tell him how to live. You don't, I don't, no one does. Life is so very simple if everyone would just allow it to be.

We eat. We fuck. We die. That's it! But isn't it glorious? Anybody who thinks he needs to act a certain way because of some vague moral code in a book written 2000 years before his own birth needs to have his head examined. Why, oh, why? Step outside the box, my friend, and look at the world around you, not some verse or scripture saying. Take a look at trees and lakes and clouds. You will see god! Yet, he will not speak to you in a tone that commands. He will not order you to do this or that. He is silent as a stone. He is wise as a mountain. He is a river and a stream. When was the last time a stream told you not to have sex outside of marriage? When was the last time a mountain told you that you were sinful or unclean? When was the last time a tree told you to beg for forgiveness?

That's right, never! So, why, good mountaineer, why then do we?

Consider the lilies. And know that the kingdom of god is within you. Within you, chief! Within you! Isn't that a glorious notion? We are heaven. Heaven is right now! All you must do is realize it.
