The reason I have not been hard on Islam is because we are not talking about Islam. That should seem simple enough. Were it a discussion of Islam, no doubt I could lambast it as well. However, to answer your other question:

If we approach all things from the standpoint that all is One and that good and evil are simply terms we have invented to describe certain things we do or don't like, then we will see that Sept 11th was no different than 10,000 Turks dying in an earthquake. (Which happened, as you may know. No tears from us, there, right?)

If, however, we cling to notions of good and evil, we will no doubt see the attack as evil. Of course, some might argue that the attack was a very good thing. You see? It all depends upon your point of view. So, might it not be that both points of view are wrong?

Consider that you had no attachment to anything that happened on the earth. Pretend you are an alien looking down on the earth with no concept of humanity's ideas of good and evil. You would see men killing each other day in and day out. They rape, steal, love, pray, kneel, beg, batter, and annihilate each other. You might say to yourself, "What terribly absurd little creatures humans are." You might shrug and say, "Let's have a cup of tea." But would it bother you? Why should it? You're an alien who looks down and sees nothing but mayhem, some of the mayhem is labeled good by the earthling and some is labeled bad. You get a really funny feeling about this and add an extra lump of sugar to your tea...
