I still think that the "big boys" in the anti-virus community fund some of these viruses. How's that for a conspiracy theory? ;)

There's no denying that viruses are big business. We made a ton of money when Blaster hit last year. We sold dozens of copies of Norton Anti-Virus and raked in a lot from the labor to install NAV and remove the viruses. I would rather not have the nasty viruses than make money from them, myself.

Mostly, though, I believe viruses are from people "pushing the envelope" just to see how much they can accomplish in the shortest time.

As far as trojans go, some of them are used to steal information. Most are just annoying/destructive. I did some work at a local business who's machines had been compromised and untold amounts of information might have been taken from the machines, but there's no way to tell.
