I've said many times that a broad militarist approach to fighting terror is a guarantee for failure.

We have poured hundreds of millions or dollars into the middle east in military aid into the middle east over the past 40 years: Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Egypt -- is it any wonder that these places are some of the most volitile nations on earth? When you spend money on war -- war is the result!

Instead, this same money spent in ways that might aid these regions: education, healthcare, agriculture would reap greater rewards over a longer time period. We would be winning the "hearts and minds" of the people. Money spent on peace results in peace. This sort of foriegn aid causes outrage in the US however! It's OK to arm them but heaven forbid we FEED them -- let them get their own food!

That said -- some aspects of the WoT have been effective. Going after Al Qaeda's money has been very effective -- we have disrupted their structure and communications with our military efforts. Violence when focused properly IS an effective means to combat terrorists -- it's the large scale, oppressive operations that seem to undermine our standing in the world.
