Subject: Fighting Terrorism

The more I think about this issue, the more certain I become that fighting terrorism in a war-like way will fail. We can't even prevent terrorists of our own kind in our own country, let alone terrorists halfway across the globe. With Oklahoma City and continued burning of abortion clinics and churches right here in the States, by our own citizens, how can we hope to combat these problems with further agressive behaviour? These are not men with faces. These are men who fly below the radar. They can't be smoked out. And the more you try, the stronger their resolve becomes, the stronger their hatred, the stronger their cause.

When a bully pushes kids around on the playground, what should we do? Punish the bully with a whipping? Give him a taste of his own medicine? It is my thinking that the bully is acting in a way that is out of balance; that is, he is acting out to compensate for other feelings he is having, from obvious causes. This is not always the case, certainly, but it seems a good place to start. If we get at the root of what is causing the bully's problems, then address these issues, we will be much more effective in combating his aggressive behaviour. I think the same is true for terrorists. Though the issue, is arguably more complex, the analogy remains true.

If we were to beat the bully, or spank him, he would only grow more resentful of authority, angry, and embittered towards his fellow man. In a sense, we are only aiding the same sort of behaviour we wished to combat...
