Subject: MVD's question to me: What has caused such disrespect for the land? Anywhere and everywhere?

Your question can be answered simply enough by my frame of reference, but you'll hate my answer: sin. We are too self-centered and would rather empty the cigarette ashes on the ground than walk to the garbage can. We'd rather make an extra buck than install scrubbers on the smokestacks.

Your question though has another component that I think is implied but maybe I'm reading too much into it. When you ask what has caused such disrespect for the land it sounds like you are implying that this is a fairly recent phenomenon. I'd argue that we've usually been much dirtier per person (bodily wastes were never dealt with in the past - imagine how absolutely filthy the Indian village of Prophetstown by present-day Lafayette, Indiana was when it had 2,000 people and all of them were relieving themselves in the same water source that they were bathing in and drinking from - there must have been tremendous fishkills downstream and the bacteria levels would have been off of the charts), it is just that now there are lots more of us and it becomes more noticeable.
