Gina, i'm not going to go continue this discussion, it's starting to lead nowhere, we both make valid points for and against, it's really a matter of how each of us was brought up. Essentially we strive for the same things so it's just a matter of being brought up in a religious environment or not at this point....
I will answer your one question though: no, i have not read 10 Commandments growing up, my parents created very fine guidelines for me without religion. My parents were brought up the same exact way and honestly, you will have to look long and hard to find a couple of people with such high moral standards and such good hearts, they're the best parents one can hope for and are extremely liked and respected by everyone that meets them in their lives.
As shocking as this concept may be to you, it IS possible to teach your children right from wrong without religion. I got by just fine and i'd like to believe my moral compass is extremely fine-tuned (if it wasn't, believe me, i'd be hearing it from my parents! LOL). And you better believe it that i will make sure my children grow up with the same values i did. And I think all of that can be achieved just fine without the church getting involved :)
There are way too many examples of people who beat their children and then go to church with them on Sundays, i know you brush it away like "bad apples" but there are a LOT of those kind of apples in this tree, Gina, a lot more than one may care to admit...
Anyway, again, i will stop with this discussion, we're not going to change each other's minds so what's the point :)
I do have to say you wrote a very well spoken, passionate post there and for that i thank you. You're clearly an example of someone who was shaped by her faith in a beautiful, positive way and did not get carried away by it either. As i mentioned before, i'd want nothing more than for EVERY religious person to look at things with the same balance and level headedness you do, that would be the one thing that would make me say: "yes, we need religion"....
hugs,
Myst
