Pitt’s contribution, to the group Californians Against Eliminating Basic Rights, is one of the largest individual entertainment industry donations to the No on Prop. 8 campaign coming from the entertainment industry. Others who have chipped in so far include David Geffen, who has donated $50,000, and Bryan Lourd, who contributed $5,000.

#1. Bryan Lourd is Brad's agent, so obviously 1 reason Brad is doing this is to support him.
#2. If you read the second paragraph, it clearly states Brad is doing it so other people in the biz will step up. The reason the political people released the press release is Brad is the biggest male star & by attaching his name to it it will get the issue ATTENTION.
Is that really too hard to figure out?

Maybe it is, but Jolie doesn't want to get married? What's he supposed to do, put a gun to her head & make her walk down the aisle.

They don't present themselves as anything, the people who deride them as "saintly" are just upset because Brangelina make them feel INFERIOR & GUILTY because they do nothing while Brangelina do so much to better the lives of others.
