I only have 2 pro fights but I was a top div 1 prospect out of high school, i was a sambo national champ, 3 time high school all american, all state, and I won freestyle and greco roman state and national titles I had numerous scholarships offers from top D1 schools,NC state, nebraska, etc.
But after sept 11, I gave that up and joined the millitary i figured they needed me more, but i have a sparring session at hardcore in athens in 2 weeks there are supposed to be some very important people there watching, and thanks for the advice, any more would be appreciated

Even with only 2 pro fights, that strong a wrestling background would definitely get you a look. How is your BJJ. I ask that one because now a days there are alot of guys who were D-1 starters who are Brown and black belts, but not so many that good in the IFL.

Not knowing anything else, I would think the strong wrestling is what alot of the coaches for the IFL look at the most, mainly because alot of the things that are bad in wrestling are easy to lose in a good camp and alot of the things that are good are hard to teach (in a short time sense).

Also as a side note, I would consider a top D-1 prospect Someone who was heavily recruited by Iowa, Minnesota, or some of the other top 10 schools, Which Nebraska is a year in and year out top 20 school.

There is a guy In NC who is on an IFL team. Tim Kennedy ( who is also in the military). He is definitely not the IFL average (the guy is UFC main card material easy), but if you could train with him or some of the guys he trains with (like Greg Thompson) I think that could go a long ways towards getting you on an IFL team, both those guys are very, very good at what they do.

once again thanks for the info, I have no belt in BJJ, the place I train doesnt teach it, I teach the only ground fighting skills, like I said mostly a mix of sambo, wrestling, catch wrestling. I dont want to sound cocky but I have competed around the country and usually came out on top, I am very confident in my ground game. Do you teach anywhere? It is hard for me to find good competition around here or training in different styles, Im not knocking on my gym its great, my coach is great, its just our resources are limited, if you have ever been to haywood county you know what I mean. Any suggestions???? Again advice would be appreciated.

Also those were just 2 of the schools that recruited me. I did not want to make a big list but I agree Iowa, and Minn are the best, and I am being humble by saying I doubt those guys would have looked my way, I just want this bad, I was honorably discharged from the millitary, and there isnt much for returning vets I am now working as a carpenter, I learned in the millitary the body can do much more than the mind lets it and my mind is determined to do this for me my wife and kids. I just need some guidance.

I teach along with a couple of guys in Angier. I am nothing special on the mat, but am a decent kickboxer. If you want to see where you stand though, there is Greg Thompson and Tim Kennedy over in Fayetville. If you can hang with those guys you can hang with ANYONE. But both those guys are freakishly strong, athletic guys who can put anyone on their backs, and combine that with BB level BJJ, you will see where you stand with an IFL crop pretty fast, since Tim is/was a fighter on Igor Zienoviev's team.

If you are looking for a consistent team of guys to train with, I suggest going to Crossfit or Fayetville. Alot of guys at both places with alot of fights. You are welcome to come to angier, but if you have IFL in mind, Kennedy and Thompson will be much better barometers of where you stand. What do you weigh?

I keep mentioning Gregg and Tim because they are bar none the best grappler and MMa fighter in the state (of NC) and its not often you get to train with people of that caliber in NC. Forget who else may be or claim to be a BB in BJJ, roll with those guys and you will understand what it is supposed to mean.

where is angier, i am weighing in at about 165 i am cutting to 155 for hard core in 2 weeks I dont absolutely have IFL in mind I just want to make it, you know what I mean every dream I have ever had I let slip away for the benefit of other people this is the last one Im holding on to, I wish I had the ability to go to fayetville but money is kind of tight when your raising two kids what weight does greg and tim fight? I am a kickboxer too I had a little trouble adjusting from a grapplers fighting stance to a muay thai stance but im finally getting them blended together rather nicely, and effectly I actually like muay thai better, but Im a better grappler

Right off of 55 in angier. TFTC academy, cant miss it (town is too small to miss it). Gregg is 200+ and would wipe the mat with you, Tim fights at 185 and 205 (185 last fight I think) so maybe they wont be your best barometers. You are more than welcome to come train with us, just so long as you go easy on the civilians.

Were you a marine by chance?

Cant edit to add anything. Whether we can help you or not you can come in and decide. We have John who is around 160, me and Brian are 200+, I have no desire to fight anymore (bum leg and run a business that leaves me run down at the end of the week), but John has a fight in Miami in October and would welcome any extra work.

I also mean no slight in saying Greg and Tim would wipe the mat with you, but that was just fact and is based as much on weight as skills. Fact is Greg wipes the mat with ALOT of guys who were starting D-1 level studs, alot of them bigger than him too.

not a marine, Navy I know everybody says this but I actually did the seal thing for a while before getting cut poor eyesight ruined that for me. What would be the best time to come by, me and my training partner are in the market for somewhere else we are about to outgrow our current facillity.

There is a guy in Nashville, Tenn or near there who is pretty good BJJ/MMa guy and puts on fights in Tennesee. I cant remember his name at the moment, but he might be closer to you.

If it makes you feel better when I started fighting in '98 I would drive to Va Beach to train, 3 hours + each way. But they had a much more energized BJJ/MMA community back then. Not so much anymore.

Also I think there are some decent BJJ guys in hendersonville? Lots of places around Charlotte and Hickory as well. You are more than welcome to come train with us, but I dont know how much energy anyone would have after a 4 hour drive.

I am sure you have thought about this as well, but should you not jump right into IFL contention and want to still compete in MMA, you may want to move. Decent trim carpenters and framers do quite well in The triangle (construction is EXPLODING) and if you are serious about competing long term you are going to want people who push you at every aspect of the game around you. I dont know if you can get that where you are now. I know you can in and around Raleigh.

Thanks again, me and my wife are seriously thinking about moving just for that reason we discuss it daily its just difficult to committ to it. I am at a crossroads right now trying to decide the path to take, I was born in Nebraska and still have family up there right on the state line of Iowa, right near the Militech guys that option has also been weighing heavily on me, but I also have to keep in mind my decisions also affect the lives of my wife and kids. But I keep telling myself Spencer Fisher lived 30 min from me and he made it so it is not impossible. But to get better I need people better than me as coaches and training partners and I am not getting that right now. I have honestly not been able to go 100% with people at the gym,or not been able to push myself or anyone else push me for that matter. Not a promise but dont be suprised if you see me at you guys gym one day, Nashville is 5-6 hours.

The good thing about Raleigh, like I said, even a semi skilled carpenter can make money to support himself pretty well. The training options are not what they would be in Bettendorf, but keeping food on the table until fighting pays the way is certainly easier in the Triangle than up that way (unless you can get a cushy Casino job).

Brandon Garner is also training at Crossfit in Raleigh. He has a good sponsor and gets decent loot to fight in Iowa every so often, so there are going to be oppurtunities around this area. They will be 10 times better if the State decides to legalize MMA this session.

If they decide to legalize it, there is a petition on the internet I cant remember the site, me and my wife signed it at the time it only had about 1800 signatures. But as popular as it has become I dont think they can keep out for to much longer. My sister-in law goes to Cambell University she said that your gym was only about 5 min away from there, is this true.

I dont think its that close. More like 15-20 minutes, at least that's how long it took my wife to drive to get some paperwork from Cambell one day when she was with me at the gym. But then again I dont really ever go anywhere in Harnett county other than the gym, but there was a guy there a few weeks ago who wrestled for Cambell and recently graduated and he said something about it being close.

AS for petitions......they will not and have never gotten anything legalized or illegalized one thing does that.....money. And these days there are a couple folks with deeeeeeep pockets lobbying the NC politicos, THAT will make things happen, when is the question, not if.

Brandon is correct. In North Carolina the best MMA guys are Greg Thompson and Tim Kennedy. Brandon is an old school accomplished fighter and has been around for years. His knowledge of MMA, Muay Thai and Grappling are SOLID. It is a shame his knee and career keep him out of competition because with the training base he has now he would be a serious threat. Back in the day he trained himself and like he stated drove hours to get any kind of training.

As for MMA in NC. It will happen. The question as always is when. My partner and i have hired a lobbiest (anyone want to help pay the bill?) and are working hard to get the legislation buy in. It will take some time but it will get legalized.
