I'm not an instructor but I like to see new people wear gi's for at least 6 months or so. Just seems like new guys get in bad habits of relying on muscle or sweat to get out of subs. Gi teaches the technique.

Of course it depends on your goals I guess. Some people who only want to do mma don't want to ever wear the gi.

Also, I hate the new guy who won't buy a gi for 8 months but latches on to yours like there is no tomorrow when rolling.

Good to see this forum with some discussion again.

I dont wear a Gi and havent worn one to train in for over 6 years. I dont grab one when I roll with a guy wearing one, But I can understand the frustration of the concept.

For MMA I think alot of strong arguments could be made for wearing a Gi and not wearing one. Personally if a person does not seek BJJ ranking or to compete in Gi competitions I see no need for the Gi. But yes alot of shite will fly with no Gi that does not happen with a Gi, but it has its benefits, you tend to set up no Gi armlocks alot tighter, and pay much better attention to small details like squeezing the thighs together, etc.
