I dont wear a Gi and havent worn one to train in for over 6 years. I dont grab one when I roll with a guy wearing one, But I can understand the frustration of the concept.

For MMA I think alot of strong arguments could be made for wearing a Gi and not wearing one. Personally if a person does not seek BJJ ranking or to compete in Gi competitions I see no need for the Gi. But yes alot of shite will fly with no Gi that does not happen with a Gi, but it has its benefits, you tend to set up no Gi armlocks alot tighter, and pay much better attention to small details like squeezing the thighs together, etc.

I guess when I wear and don't wear a gi depends on what is comming up. I require all new guys to wear one. When I teach class we do it in a gi. IF guys want to roll no-gi on open mat days they are welcome to. If a guy is fighting they don't roll in a gi while training, except on open mat days you'll see them put the gi on as well.

As for how long to train beginners in what? I stick with teach them to perfect the bascis. I leave out a lot of the fancy stuff till they have gotten a handle on the basics. I don't tap advanced guys out with anything but the basics and when I get caught it is positioning and transitions to the basics that get me caught. Most basic moves are the same gi or no-gi except the availability of chokes.
