I think Joe is presiding over Gracie related events for the east coast. Or maybe this is for the whole country? Anyway, congrats JOE!

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Carlos Gracie, Jr., President of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation today announced that the IBJJF had officially recognized the North Carolina Jiu-Jitsu Federation as the organizing/supervising body for the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the State of North Carolina. In addition, Gracie announced the appointment of Joe Hurst as the President of the North Carolina Jiu-Jitsu Federation.

Joe Hurst is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and operates five Jiu-jitsu Schools throughout North Carolina. They are located in Concord, Salisbury, Statesville, Ashville, and Hendersonville, NC. I will always do my very best to help the sport and each and everone that loves this sport as I do, period. The politics are for others. I am just proud even for a day to be a part.

There are some big things in the rising with both BJJ and MMA events that are in the works. This was just an extra blessing.

Congrats joe on the appointment as the President of the North Carolina Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. One question though, I thought Togno was the president? Just curious. Oh, one other question ... what impact will this have for us in NC?

This is the one that comes from Brazil, Carlos Gracie Jr President of Gracie Barra that runs the Mundials and Pan Ams it was the first a true federation. Do you the cards one has to have to compete in Brazil you can get those through us or on line etc.. Each and every state will eventually have a represntative in it. I was the first, I was lucky and very proud. It will bring a sanctioning body to this sport for the US and will help organize the events and the sport.

I hope this clears it up a little. At the event in Oct it will be announced. Gracie Barra Black Belt Andre that helps run the Mundials in Brazil will be coming to help our refs and the running of the events to ensure better ran events and help make them better.

The fact is that there is already a NORTH CAROLINA BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU FEDERATION INC. It was formed last year and is legally approved by the State of North Carolina. Joe Hurst can become the president of any other association, but legally by the State of North Carolina he may not start up another BJJ Federation in the STATE of North Carolina. Nomatter what is said in Brazil. There can only be one NCBJJF by law.
We feel that the Bud event is a great thing for the State.
I also train BJJ and I also am the legal rep for the NCBJJF.
The Officail NC Brazilain Jiu Jitsu Federation Inc.
Board:
President Luis "Sucuri" Togno -- 2.Black Belt
Vice President Paulinho "Mushu" Elsimanni --Black Belt
Technical Director Romero "Jacare" Cavalcanti -6.Blackbelt
Referee Director Luiz Palhares - 5. Blck Belt

I wonder if this makes any difference?

While I was read this Federation is this and that Federation is that, I thought

I do that sometimes, you know.

I thought “in Brazil they don’t call it Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because you are in Brazil they just call it Jiu-Jitsu, and every black belt that I have seen and talked to calls it Jiu-Jitsu some may call it Gracie jiu-jitsu but most call it just jiu-jitsu”

So I thought that is why Hurst’s federation would be called the “North Carolina Jiu-Jitsu Federation” because is came from a Federation inside brazil, but then again their name is the “International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation” so I was barking up the wrong tree.

But it looks to me that one will be called ‘NORTH CAROLINA BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU FEDERATION” and the other will be called “North Carolina Jiu-Jitsu Federation”

so I don’t know, we will see what happens with this.

Shouldn't matter... "legal approval" by the State would only mean either /or: a corporation was formed and registered with the state, or a trademark was filed with the state. If a corporation was registered but the name wasn't trademarked, anybody and everybody that wants to, could come along and usurp your name. If a trademark was filed, you could protect the literal name "NORTH CAROLINA BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU FEDERATION INC" but that wouldn't stop anybody from forming "NORTH CAROLINA GRACIE JIU JITSU FEDERATION INC" or "NORTH CAROLINA JIU JITSU FEDERATION INC" etc., etc.

So worst case is, we wind up with two (confusingly) similarly named organization. Big whooptie-f'in-do. Most likely, one will gain major support and become recognized by the folks "on the street" and the other will die out or live on life-support forever, hanging around the fringes of the public conciousness.

Should clarify, if a corporation was formed, but the name wasn't trademarked, the state won't let somebody else register a corporation with the same name. But if somebody else uses "your" name for a non-registered business/association, you're basically SOL. Especially if they turn around and file for a trademark on the name.

All that is correct. The NCBBJ was reg. and TM

But that doesnt stop anyone from starting..

Example: NC Brazilian Jiu Jitsu league...

Just like Brazil has the cbjj and then theres the Olinpic confereation ( CBJJO ).

We just dont want anyone to confuse what or whos who.

I've read everything everyone has written and I still have to go back to Guy's original question. What impact does this have for us in NC? Okay, so we have 2 reps of similarly named organizations. Aside from gettting a card to compete in the Mundials or Pan Ams what does this actually mean for us? No disrespect to either organization either. I'm just wondering how this really and truly affects the jiu jitsu community in NC.

I'm also curious to see what the real mission of each organization is.

yeah, are either or both of these leagues / federations going to promote and sanction events here in NC? Will they do rankings or something? I'm also curious to know exactly what the missions of the respective groups are.

I cant speak for Joes organization but having 2 organizations will only help organize this sport even more in the Carolinas. The purpose of the NCBJJF:
• To spread and encourage the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the State of North Carolina.
• To standardize the teaching method ensuring high quality instruction.
• To certify and endorse schools and instructors qualified to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
• To promote and regulate the sport and state wide tournaments.
• To certify referees in the state of North Carolina.

We are using the same rules and guidelines as the Cbjj in Brazil. Same belt Graduation system as well.

I really dont care either way.

My father is a Lawyer there is nothing at all wrong with Calos Gracie Jr. Starting a Federation here in the US under the name he has used as a Federation in Brazil for a long time. He was the first and main one, period.

How will it help NC... or every other state, each and every state will be appointed a rep for the Federation. It will purify all the belts so they can be traced and all of thier students will also have cards like a drivers license that will have thier rank and signed by Carlos Gracie Jr.

Eventually if you have the card you simply just show it at an event.

Then all organizers will cordinate the others to help get the word out and promote others events. This in future will be a key. Assistance will be given to educate ref's and the running of events to make better events.

What is the purity of Carlos Gracie Jr Organization, well I wont address that all should know he runs the Mundials and Pan ams and has done so for years.

I expect this because it is just started but as it grows all will see.

This was not a debate, it is just what is.

Joe what you are doing is great. and yes I know your Daddy is a lawyer. But you can not use the same name as the NCBJJF because its been reg with the State of NC as a Inc.

You and Carlinhos can do like he did in Cali. and use leauge or something else. example ( NC BJJ League )

Your Dad can help explain those details. Ok.

the NCBJJF says they are here to
“certify and endorse schools and instructors qualified to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”

So I am not qualified to teach, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, per your organization? if that is right, ok that is cool.

No seriously he just said all belts would be signed by thier instructor, the instructor has to sign the paper work and thier black belt instructors must be tracable etc.... This is just what I am told.

James... example... the average person that doesnt know you or any other instructor in the Carolinas doesnt know if you are qualified to teach. so they can go to the NCBBJF and see if you or said person is actually qualified to teach. Any one can see who is actually qualified to ref at tournaments. Level 1 is for purple, blue and white belts meaning they can only ref there belt level and below...
Level2 is for brown and Blck belts meaning they can ref all belt levels..
the belt graduation system of the NCBJJF is the same belt system used in Brazil by the CBJJ ( that is run by Carlinhos Gracie )
the tournament rules and weights are also the same. that way no matter what federation tournament you go to.. may it be in Cali, Fl, GA, NY, TN, or even in Brazil.
everyone needs to get together and help organize this sport.
we have stopped 3 tae kwon do academied that was saying the taught brazilian jiujitsu in the area. ( true the instructor was a blue belt in BJJ but people was under the inpretion that he was more than that cause he would wear his tae kwon do Balck belt when he was teaching the BJJ class. so the average person that doesnt know, get trapped in the illusion.
become part of the future of this Sport.

Hey Congrats Joe! You put in a lot of time and energy into the sport and you deserve all the credit you get. I'm truly happy for you.

As too different the Federations and what not..well, I have been around for a long time and the reality is that people will do whatever they want too. I can't tell you how many people claim to teach JKD and Kali that are not certified. It bothered me for a while but then I guess I finally understood that there is nothing you can really do about it. TKD and Karate guys as well as every other style has been borrowing stuff from others as long as I can remember. As a matter of fact, I trained with Rigan Machado and he had ripped off some Shooto legs set ups and attacks and now claimed it was BJJ! I know this because he got them from Erik Paulson. John Machado took some sarong techniques from Silat/Kali that he learned from Sifu Dan Inosanto and they are now required to know before you can get your Black belt from him. This is going to happen and if your not ok with it..well, you better get used to it! LOL

People are always going to claim to have something they don't (ie. Black belt in BJJ or JKD instructor rank) and this is won't ever change. Like it or not, wrong or right.

I hope that these Federations both grow and help the area produce more well run events. I have known Luis Togno for a while and I know he is a very talented Martial Artist as well as a great guy. I haven't had a chance to workout with Joe yet, though I have only heard great things and hope that we can get together sometime and have some fun.

The sport needs good guys like you two in order to set up and create well run events. I think they made a good choice back in Brazil picking Joe.

Anyway, I think there is plenty of room for anyone who wants to improve the Martial arts in NC, not matter who it is..Anthony ,who busts his ass on new events, Luis or Joe and everyone else I forgot to mention!

sorry for the rambling, too many punches to the head!

Thanks,
Scott Shields

Great post Scott & Ryan...
Luis thanks you guys!! and everyone else that helps this sport grow regardless of what Federation you chose to support. Anthony Huss is another person that Luis would like to thank for his hard work...
The Bottom line is Both Organizations have the same goal and this will only help BJJ in the State of NC, well only if people quit being so political and help the Sport Grow.
Its not about the people running the Federations, its about the Sport that we love...

hey I wish both the best of luck, no politcs here, but

the bottom line, the belt represents the school your train at, you train at a crappy school you will get crappy training. and the students from the most part will be crappy in comppitition that is if they compete at all. some school s don’t and that is ok too. my students do compete and i let that, their ability, speak for its self.

and robert how did you stop the TKD school, i have a blue belt under Royce Gracie, i teach BJJ and do wear my blue belt during BJJ class, i don’t hide that but as i see it per your web site only purple and above should teach?

Like I said before, no politics here, but I am asking what other will be thinking.

I am glad it got questions going it is exactly for that, one other thing that it will bring as of NOW any american can go to Brazil to compete in the Mundials but every Brazilian has to win a qualifier... The Pan Ams and the Bud cup will eventually be qulifiers for people to have to place to go to Brazil to compete.

All other reps will help other events to make them grow and will support others to make all tourneys better and more pure. Not to help one toureny but all that are invlolved.

Hi James. Thanks... What we did as far as the TKD school was we had a meeting with the schools instructors. Talked to them about what they was doing. We didnt stop them from teaching BJJ, we explain the problem of teaching BJJ wearing another arts Black belt. They understood and agreed. Once they earn purple belt they will be apply for there academy memberships.

As far as "only purple and above should teach" thats not true.
only purple and above need to apply to be an endorsed academy.
a Blue belt can teach but they are considered as Clubs since the Blue belt is an entry level belt. Meaning that he has knowledge of the basic fundamentals. We are not taking nothing away from the Blue belts that are teaching in the Carolinas. It takes an average of 6 - 8 month or a year of good training and you can get your blue belt. more or less right?? thats just not enough to allow a guy that get his Blue in lets say 7 months at some seminar, and have him be endorsed to run a BJJ school. But a Purple belt has put in his TIME and is qualified to run a BJJ program with a more careful eye than the younger belt level. Hope this clarifies some things.

Hope you and the rest help support the Federations buy joining. ( athlete membership and academy memberships )at

One reason why I left Judo was because of all of the politics. I was a ranked black belt under my instructor and made several trips to Japan to train at the Kodokan over the years. That, along with a wrestling and Sambo background helped me to stomp out many of the guys from a more "political" organization during competition. However, my instructors rankings were never "officially" recognized and therefore I was told by others that I could not wear the black belt. I earned it. I kept it. And my instructor continued to teach his Judo to people willing to learn. "Political recognition" or not.

Good intentions can go a long way. Jut don't let this turn into a pissing contest. You might be pointed toward the wind.

Pretty funnny! I think that it is always good to remember that guys like Tito, Frank Shamrock and Ken are white belts in BJJ. Erik Paulson is a blue belt and I have seen him catch Rigan! Belts really are a subjective thing. A black belt means that "the guy who gives it to you" thinks that you have enough knowledge and skill to meet "his" standard of black belt. Some other guy might think it is not enough, others, too much. Very subjective indeed. We have all seen guys at tournaments that have blue belts on that should be in the brown belt division, as well as looking at black belts and thinking.."what happened? how did that guy get a black belt?"

I have seen TKD green belts smoke high level TKD black belts and I have seen white belts rip through BJJ black belts. It's all subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt. I am not dismissing someones acheivement in earning a belt or rank. I think that is very important, like goal setting. I respect the guy who has trained hard and earned a rank in whatever style or rank either in..TKD, BJJ, JKD, or whatever. None are better than any of the other.

Anyway, I'm rambling again, sorry about that!

Thanks,
Scott Shields

More will be announced at the Bud event Sept 30th & Oct 1st.I personally want to generally make good events grow like Guys and Anthonys and all the good ones and this will be an avenue for that. It is the International Federation by Barra Gracie Carlos Gracie Jr and will benifit all that get thier cards (like a drivers license) and will bring support to all good events. If people dont want to simply don't,those that do I will do all in power to promote and help promote thier events and schools.

I am just wondering is this a way that the Federation is using to keep a sense of Brazil in The us, BJJ is slowely being replaced with AJJ. Many Americans now have their belts and Blackbelts, Grapppler's quest and NAGA are replacing the PAN AMS as the top Tournments. BJJ.org recognizes peoples belts from instructors and so does the MAT when your on the mat, you know who is a _____belt and who is not.

AJJ? American Jiu-Jitsu, you mean?

If you're gonna go there, let's just go the CACC (Catch Wrestling) way... ;-)

The truth of the matter Frank is YES!!!!!

Will it ever happen??? Luis said its to late. but we can try and help organize the Sport...

Thats why the west coast is growing together rather than bickering about whos doing what. Dont get me wrong they have there politics as well, but even so they will still go and support that persons event or Fed...
Here its more like kindergarden.

Ted what Joe is talking about is that Paulinho faxed the Confederation in Brazil ( Carlinhos Gracie organization ) the legal paper work from the State showing that the North Carolina Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation Inc. already exist. Paulinho spoke with Alvaro and Alvaro stated that all the document was in order and that they was not aware of the fact that ncbjjf already existed. He would give Cralinhos the paper work later during there meeting before Carolinhos leave to Cali because he would be in the USA for 2 months. See, If they wanted to start something here in NC thats great but they would have to use another name thats it. Plain and simple.

Joe

What mat are you talking about? Competition mat? LOL,When is the last time you competed and won? By the way i am only a blue belt that is maybe close to a purple in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so i don't deserve to be on the same mat with you. You wear a black belt right? Are you really a black belt? How did you pay for it Cash, Check, or Charge? This is my last post for a while, but anyway good luck with the Bud Cup and the Federation. Peace :0)

Much Respect

C'mon guys, this is a little silly. Joe, everyone knows you are a top level martial artist and everyone, including myself, respect you. This guy is only messing with you.

Please don't take this stuff seriously. This is not the old west and everyone has their opinions. You can't beat people up because talk trash.

Peter, there is no reason to insult someone and to be disrepectful.

C'mom guys lighten up.

Just a thought,
Thanks,
Scott Shields

# You can't beat people up because talk trash.

That is one place where I find that Western culture sucks, compared to some other cultures. "Talking trash" is offending one's honor, and one *should* be able to respond to that by putting the beat down on somebody.

Speaking only for myself, if Joe beat the snot out of this guy, got charged with a crime, and I was on the jury.. I'd vote to acquit, just on principle.

F#%@ it, you get in somebody's face (virtual or real-life) and talk sh!t, you deserve what you get, IMO.

If we practiced this mentality, I can guarantee you people would be more respectful. It's the same logic that explains why one of the most respectful crowds you will even encounter is the crowd at a gun show. :-)

Ok, I understand your viewpoint. I agree that people should be more respectful. I disagree with you that people have the right to beat someone up if they insulted or disrespected (if this is what you are saying). What do you do if someone disrespects you and you are not able to beat them up? For example, an 80 year old man gets disrespected by Matt Hughes? Does he now have the right to shoot him or hire someone to do it for him? Where does this get us? Honor is important and is a value that I treasure highly. There is a point where you have to take things with a grain of salt though.

I hope that my point is clear. I understand your view (I hope), but I just think it isn't reasonable.

Thank you,
Scott Shields

Ok, honestly I was being a little bit fascetious with my comments. No, I don't *really* think that you should be able to hire somebody to shoot somebody else because they insult you... well... at least I think I don't. It just pisses me off how in our society, nobody seems to be responsible for their actions anymore, especially in terms of blabbering on the Internet. I just think that every individual should have to accept that their actions and words have consequences and should live with a certain element of fear of those consequences. It's not a binary thing, and I don't know *exactly* where the line should be drawn.

#> Phillip, sup man long time no hear from.

Things are going pretty good. I haven't been around much mostly because I've been really focused on school / work / career stuff the last couple of years. From 2001 through now, I've finished one college degree that I was working on, and am down to 3 classes to finish another.

#> How's life?

Good, mostly. I've changed jobs a couple of times since the last time we spoke, but I'm at a place now in Cary that does telecom security software, and am enjoying it. I moved to a new apartment a few months ago and am still trying to get the place furnished and organized. So I'm staying busy, but life is basically OK

How 'bout yourself? Things going well?

Man ... why respond in caps unless you're trying to be inflammatory? This is ridiculous. Y'all got the same name ... who cares? No one's gonna mistake that organization for yours, I don't think. If you really think it's problematic, you should discuss this with him in person or at least in private.

As far as handling disputes, As much as I've been tempted and in turn tempted ... beating up people who piss you off? Doesn't work for grown folk and it shouldn't.

Honestly,if it means that I will have to pay one more penny to compete,I will have no part of either federation.First of Jiu jitsu is fucking huge in Brazil. It is not here. Most people would rather compete with out the gi.
Second,Carlos Gracie Jr. runs the CBJJ in Brazil. He is a very highly resected man.Not only because his father and Helio pretty much made this shit up,but he is known as one of the best instuctors out there,he is very charitable and as a wizard on the mat.He has put out some of the best instuctors and some of the best competitors out there. His name is as good as gold in the BJJ comunity through out the world let alone Brazil.
Now if you guys want to take offence to this fine,I really don't care, but I'm not trying to bash anyone.Who is heading up the 2 NC federations? Two black belts from the same town who's names and ranks are surrounded with contoversy. How good are these guys?Who knows?Out of the two of them I have only seen one of them compete, and that was only once.
There are a few tournaments around this state that happen outside of Charolette. If these guys want to convince me they are truely trying to help the sport grow and not just line thier pockets, one would think you would see them at these tournys. If not to compete,to bring a team,to watch,to ref, keep time, anything.
"It will purify all the belts so they can be traced",from Carlos Gracie Jr. is fine. From these guys is insulting. Now as far as these guys confirming my rank,I think they should roll with me.Not only is my instuctor a busy man,but I want to confirm thiers.A hundred dollars a school and twenty five dollars a competitor is a lot of money just to be able to go and pay more to be in a tournament.Thats what all this seems to be about.

This is from one of the federations websites. From the one that Luis is the head of I believe.Although it is well writen and pretty much dead on,it's interesting considering the contraversy surrounding the two guys in charge of the NC federations that are from NC.

____________________________________________________________
It is important to be aware that unfortunately there exists instructors who have a belt rank that does not reflect their actual training.(hmmm) It is not uncommon for a person to receive a blue belt after attending a few seminars and immediately begin teaching the public. More recently many individuals are promoting themselves further to purple, brown or even black.(really?) Unfortunately, it is difficult for the untrained public to make the distinction between these frauds and real qualified trained instructors(agree). It then becomes imperative to research instructors credentials, claims, certifications and associations(why do some guys get so upset I wonder). In addition, it is important to remember that in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu only a black belt can award rank and that you can only receive a black belt from a third degree black belt or higher .
_____________________________________________________________

Ok,now discuss.

First, I dont have a web site for this and was told nothing a about increased prices for competeing just it would help all. I paid $20 to get my card just like I did in Brazil when I fought in Mundials.

You want me to roll with you to prove my rank like Relson suggest I do with his guys? I would like to think I am mis reading this. I fought Maros when you fought his bro. If this is the fight I am the one you saw compete.

I know as do all ranking people... when and who my belt came from, if I tried to make eveyone like it I would never stop.

Billy, we are friends right? I just dont get it.

Of course the purifing of rank, came from him how many people do I know. I am only in NC he is to put one in each state.

We won several Brown belt and adv. divisons sat, my team not me. Our tech. is apparently pretty good.

I always got along with you, just tyring to understand.

I don't think that a federation means anything if nobody goes to a federation tourney. Guys, I have done many tourneys in NC, proably the first guy to ever do a grappling tournament in NC and I have learned one VERY IMPORTANT thing. If Team-Roc doesn't support your tourney, then your not going to have many people at your tournament. I suggest that the two federations seek out the Pretty Man himself and get his blessing. Since I have moved to Georgia, I have given my blessing to Jason aka Twister, Aka Milkman to take over a Godfather of Tournaments. I also suggest you get his support as well. Also Bad Brad is doing an awesome job of promoting tournaments. I would get his input as well.

God Bless,
The ever vigilant Blue Belt, until Billy the Freak Gets his Black belt and promotes me to purple.

My name is Phillip Rhodes and I think belts are good for holding up your pants. I decided yesterday to make myself a black-belt (83rd dan) in Fikosku-Ryu-Jdan-Wong-Jitsu, so I spent the $9.95 and ordered a nice black-belt from the Century catalog. Since I'm the supreme grand-master of this system, my rank is as legitimate as they come. If anybody claims to hold any rank in Fikosku-Ryu-Jdan-Wong-Jitsu, and it didn't come from me, they're lying.

But since you asked about BJJ (presumably), I have a white-belt with 1 stripe, granted by Carlos Lemos Jr.

Aaah, young grass-hoppa, that is because I haven't unveiled it publically yet. Currently I go up into a secret cave hidden away high in the Appalachian Mountains once a year, burn a pipe, and have a session with the Everywhere Spirit, who reveals a new technique to me... Once the spirits tell me it is time to unleash this deadly system on the world, I will begin advertising my books and videos in Black Belt magazine and give overpriced seminars all around the world...

Patience, the time of Fikosku-Ryu-Jdan-Wong-Jitsu is drawing nigh.
