I feel that this project did give me a better insight into understanding the story. I took a deeper look into the story than I normally would have, in order to write the essay properly. The positives of this exercise would be the understanding that I now have of the book. I have read it before, but this time I felt like I understood every aspect of the book and could relate to it in my own life. The negative part of this exercise would be the page requirement because it did not allow a lot of freedom. Overall the project was very interesting but it was a little hard to follow.

Yes this project gave me better insight into the novel because i was actually comparing it to my life as i went along and looking for the historical context. I did have to read more closely because i was looking for good quotes to use when i compared my life to Siddhartha's. I also needed to pay attention to the steps he took. The positivies of this exercise were that it allowed us to take a piece of literature and relate it to our own lives. Also we may look at the future with the perspective that the novel gave us. Another positive is that we read more comprehensively so we better understood Siddhartha. It also makes us question our spiritual selves. The negatives to this exercise were that the webquest is a little complicated. Also we cannot enjoy reading the novel, we are forced to read between the lines and look for quotes the entire time so we cannot just absorb it for what it is. I thought the webquest was a little difficult to follow. i didn't know which parts to include in the essay and which not to. there is more information on there than 1500 words. I also wasn't sure how to integrate all of the questions about Hinduism, Buddhism and Siddhartha. I also was confused about whether or not we were comparing our lives to the real Siddhartha or the Siddhartha from the novel.

i thought this webquest was a good way to learn Siddhartha better. It made me really look closely at the story as I read. I have read this book before, however this time I really understood it because I related it to my own life. I think this assignment overall was a positive one because it made me learn a lot more then I would have normally. It was a creative way of writing an essay. The only negative I would say is putting a minimum on the pages it has to be because that totally stresses me out even before I begin. Besides that, all the assignments in the class have had some purpose that even I can see.

Siddhartha questions after the webquest

This project forced me to analyze the story significantly more than I would have. I had previously read the book and could relate to the story a lot better this time around. I liked that there was a reason for everything that happened to Siddhartha in the story and everything made more sense. I was able to tie Siddharthas life with mine and therefore was more interested in what had happened in the book.

I found myself rereading a lot of the information in order to get a better understanding of it. There are subtle details that I might not have looked into if I were not doing the web quest.

This exercise allowed me to get all of my thoughts in order and find the meanings in the story. It made me think about my life and what people want in life in general. It stirred my interest in different cultures and religions and how it relates to my religion. I questioned if any one religion or way of life was the correct way and if happiness is the ultimate goal.

The web quest was a good overall project, however, there was too much emphasis put into this one book. I think we spent a little too much time on Siddhartha, rather than on other aspects of literature. I did my essay power-point presentation on Gandhi and was a little tired of analyzing the Indian culture.

1. I don't think that this webquest gave me any greater insight into the story. All it did was make you think about what had happened to Siddhartha and how it reflected your own life. I feel that this could have been accomplished many other ways, not just the webuest. It was a nice change from normal english assignments.
2. I did not have to read teh story more closely to be able to write the essay, however I did go back to certain parts for quotesand exact feelings.
3. The nice thing about this exercise was the uniqueness. It is a different way of making an assignment. It also leaves the whole assignment open to your own methods of researching.
4. The negative part about this assignment was that even with all the uniqueness its still just an essay. All it really is, is a new way to assign an essay.
5. The whole webquest itself is very easy to fllow, which is nice so theres no question on what you need to do or on how your going to find the information needed.

It's always nice to see the teacher put some of their own originality into their assignments, instead of just telling you to make your writing intereting. It shows that the teacher is doing some work as well.

I wondered how web pages were made. It would be great to have a webpage when I am in the classroom, there could be so much more information shared with parents as to what is due, what their or your concerns are, sites they could visit with their child pertaining to the curiculum,,,etc.
It mentioned you could make a web page using netscape, does that mean youn can do it without purchasing anything? Anyone know?

Ditto to the ladies. What I see as the problem is that the only place I have ever heard about the benefits of bilingual education is in these teacher prep classes. I never heard about this stuff when it came up on the ballot. The citizenry of California was reacting to the media hyped "problem" of excessive illegal immigration. Never mind the fact that the people who were coming here illegally were filling a critical niche in the state's economic system (a niche, by the way, which us full citizens are "too good" to fill for ourselves), but the fact is that the state constitution says that every child of school age WILL be educated here. The result is subtractive rather than additive and we see the results of that in the many studies that have been cited in the book. My question is this: Why aren't the people of California being fully informed about the constitutional (or ed. code... whatever) requirement and the benefits to THEIR children of expanding bilingual education, primarily two-way? I would hope that they would feel swindled by the anti-bilingual propositions that have passed, props that I, regrettably, voted for.

Subject: Lessow-Hurley: Two-Way Bilingual Education/Dual Language Instruction

I have been familiar with two-way bilingual education ever since I did a research paper on it in EDUC 364. Once I completed the research for the paper, I could never understand why more people were not supportive of this form of education. After reading the Judith Lessow-Hurley chapters, I still do not understand the lack of support. Based upon the research I have done, and the arguments Lessow-Hurley makes, this form of education appears to be a win-win situation. The student who complete these programs are bilingual and bileterate. I would love to be both of these, and am disapointed that I did not have the opporunity to be involved in a dual language program at an early age.
I know that there are challenges that come with this type of program (hiring enough teachers who are qualified to teach both languages, for one example), but the positive end results seem to far outweigh the challenges. Besides, what education program does not face challenges?
The fact that two-way bilingual education/dual language programs are becoming more popular in the private school sector implies that there are some people who do recognize the advantages of a society of people who are bilingual. The point that Lessow-Hurley makes about the acceptance of this type of program in private schools, however, is a thought provoking one: "The value placed on bilinugalism by those who can afford to pay for private schooling raises an important issue: Why is dual language instruction desirable for a socioecononimic elite but undesirable for minority language groups? Perhaps experimental two-way enrichment programs will change attitudes about bilingualism and dual language instruction" (Lessow-Hurley 19). I hope that the latter is the case, rather than the former. I don't know about the rest of you, but it is a very discouraging and frustrating thought that our socioeconomic elite are given the advantage of being bilingual, while some minority language groups are not even given equal opportunity to education in one language.

I agree with you Kristin, especially in light of the success of the Canadian experience where students achieved higher levels of proficiency in the second language than students who studied it as an isolated subject(p15). When students receive instruction in their primary language in the usual core curriculum, they succeed academically and become more proficient in their primary language. Not only that but they have the added support at home where much of their work will be done. We know it takes about six years to become proficient in a second language, so instruction in the second language is gradually introduced until it comprises 50 percent of instruction, as in the Two-Way Immersion program (p16). The benefits are extraordinary. Not only do these students become bilingual and biliterate, but they maintain their proficiency, better still, improve their proficiency in their first language. Additionally, they succeed academically in the core curriculum.

Yes, this seems to be a win-win program and I, too , do not understand why it is not recognized for the success rate that it seems to show in Canada and other parts of the country. Clearly, it has its challenges like those you mentioned. It would also hurt students who do not have a strong proficient language in the home where support is critical for their academic success. But, like you said, what programs do not come with their challenges? The benefits certainly seem to outweigh the challenges in this case and are worth the extra expense and effort, in my opinion.
