I do remember Jeter almost signing the year before, and I also remember thinking they waited to let A-Rod sign 1st and take the heat, which intended or not is exactly what happened. Given that Jeter has 972 hits since '98, I still think 190 million is a lot to pay a guy who hit 706 of them, or 73%, as singles. And people say the longball is ruining the game.
