If I remember correctly, Jeter had a deal with the Yankees a year earlier and it was for substancially less than the 180 mil. I can't remember the particulars, but it seemed like it was 6 or 7 years for 100 mil. I do know that the contract that Jeter ended up signing was for alot more than what he was close to signing for and it was longer in duration. The reason it went up so much was that Arod set the market. Once Tejada signs his deal, I would bet anything that it would have been less had Arod not signed for that much. If I understand the salary floor correctly, it wouldn't do much good at all. For one thing, they are throwing out the # of 45 mil. That includes all operating expenses related to payroll, for the Rangers, that is like 9 mil.
Most teams are already above 40 mil in payroll and with the payroll operating expenses, that would push every team over it.
But say that the floor does make teams push payroll up. So the Pirates keep Giles.... that leaves them where they are now, a sucky team with no real future.
