Did they *EVER* explain. . . (vague s8/9 spoilers)

that business in the first ep of season eight where Mulder was supposedly dying and wanted to be buried in, of all places, North Carolina???
During seasons 1-7, it was made abundantly clear that Mulder grew up in the Northeastern part of the United States. Various official sources (books, websites, etc.) list his hometown as Chilmark (sometimes spelled Chilmarc)Massachusetts and his parents (who were divorced from each other and both seemed to be retired) lived in Massachusetts and Connecticut, respectively, as well as owning a beach house in Rhode Island. His father was buried in a cemetery in Massachusetts (we never saw where his mother was buried) and he rooted for New York City sports teams.
In other words, he was a Yankee!! So why in the world did he want to be buried in North Carolina, rather than in his home state of Massachusetts, next to his father??
