Chapter four:

Sam ran harder than she ever had before, hoping that her father was still all right. She passed the final curve in the hall, and darkness loomed ahead. All the torches in this once bright hall had been snuffed out. The heavy smell of smoke stung her nostrils. She ran back round the bend and grabbed a still flaming torch and continued. She moved slowly down the darkened hall, the delicate maiden unexpectedly transformed into brave heroin. As she approached the doorway, the ring of steel became evident. There were growls, unearthly growls. Then a yell, this time human.

Sam bravely turned into the doorway that led into her father’s prestigious room. The ring of clashing metal louder. She held her mothers magnificent sword outstretched. The room was dark, she swung the torch inside. And suddenly the veil of shadow was lifted.

Four people fought, or was it two people and two hideous beasts. The beasts were strange, as the light changed so did they. As soon as the light entered the room, the black blades were aware of Sam’s presence. They growled louder. One of the fighters was grievously wounded, the yell she had heard only moments earlier. He had a huge gash in his side. He was fighting fearlessly with one hand, the other dangled limp by his side.

The fighter lost concentration for a second as he glanced at Sam. The Black Blade made his move. It stabbed at the fighters chest, the fighter blocked the thrust, but all too late. Their puny knives were no match for the Black Blades gruesome daggers.

The dagger speared through the fighter’s heart, he fell to the floor. Silent, unmoving.

Now with his opponent gone the Black Blade turned to Sam. Her heart clenched in fear. She stepped back, and hit the wall. She had nowhere to go. The Black Blade lunged.

The final messenger saw his friend go down. His heart filled with despair. The Black Blades were too strong, he knew he would die. As the Black Blade made one final blow to his stomach, the messenger saw the other Black Blade hit the young girl over the head with the but of his dagger.

There was a noise, grunting. Sam didn’t move, she opened her eyes. All was dark again, but slowly dark shapes began to form out of the darkness. One seemed to be leaning over her. She glanced to her side, barley moving. Her father lay there, unconscious. There was a figure stooped over him as well. As her eyes further adjusted they revealed that the stooped shaped were holding their daggers poised above their heads.

A wild panic suddenly overcame her. She began to pant, but the Black Blades took no notice. They continued in their mad trance. Sam was about to try and run when the Black Blades snapped up, their heads turned towards the door. Then she heard as well, footsteps.

One of the Black Blades turned and began to slowly move towards the door, as the steps grew louder. The other remained guard over Sam and Myrton. Sam noticed her father was now stirring. She looked across the room, One Black Blade walking towards the door about in the middle of the room. A dead fighter lying near the door and another lying nearer to Sam.

As the mysterious footsteps came found the doorway the Black Blade guarding Sam and Myrten looked away from them. Sam looked at her now awake father and they made their move.

The two jumped up, Sam grabbing her mother’s sword, that had somehow been kicked to where she had lain. And Myrten unsheathed his knife. The black blade that was guarding Sam and her father screamed, and jumped into battle with Sam and Myrten.

*****

Jeb held his sword out in front of him. There was a scream from inside the lord’s room. He turned the corner slowly, and was confronted with the snarling face of some hideous creature.

Jeb was caught off guard, and the beast thumped him in the chest with its fist. Jeb felt ribs crack. He stumbled backward out of the room, and tripped on the dead guards body lying next to the door. Jeb fell, and watched as the beast came at him.

*****

Sam and Myrten were in trouble, they fought bravely, but the beast was too strong for the two of them. Sam swung at the beast, putting all her momentum into the swing, and when it missed, the sword fell from her hands and went skittering into the darkness.

The beast grunted and prepared to finish her off with a swift stab to the heart. Sam shut her eyes and stuck her hands out. Myrten yelled and leapt for his daughter.

The black dagger came down, Sam opened her eyes and saw her father standing in front of her, the tip of a black dagger pointing out his back. She screamed as her father’s body fell to the ground. The Black Blade advanced toward her again. Sam stood weaponless, helpless just as the beast was lifting his dagger, there came a moan from the messenger that had been stabbed in the stomach only minutes earlier. He grabbed his sword and swung.

The sword came low at the beast and struck it straight in the foot. The keen sword easily severing it. The messenger breathed out one last breath, he had failed his mission.

*****

Jeb struggled for something, anything, to stop the beast. His hand grasped the wooden shaft of the dead guard’s spear. He lifted it just as the monster dived on top of him.

There was a yelp as the beast landed on the spear that had skewered his insides. Jeb shoved the skewered creature to the side, still writhing on the shaft of the spear. He jumped up and again rushed into the dark room. Barely able to see he ran towards the final beast. It was staggering, but still held a blade above the young maiden’s head. She stood helpless grappling with the immensely strong beast, the dagger slowly coming closer and closer.

Jeb ran forward the beast saw him and growled. But now it had become the helpless one. Jeb raised his sword and drove it through the Black Blades heart.
