Chapter Five:

The rain had ceased; it had left the forest with that heavy smell. Feiln trudged along, his few possessions slung over his back. The sun was falling slowly from the sky: dusk was approaching. There was a beautiful forest on either side of the well-worn road. The land sloped gently down to Feiln’s right; he was heading north, to Tenell. Perhaps there he could, forget the death of his beloved father.

As the young man walked the road grew steeper, it wound slowly into some hills; The hills of Past He wasn’t very familiar with the land this far north. Rarely did anyone go north, there was always better hunting to the south, and no one went to Tenell. The road wound slowly higher and the land to Feiln’s left dropped away. A soft carpet of green stretched down the hillside, as far as the eye could see. Magnificent.

Feiln remembered stories. Stories of the world. One of them was of these very hills. It was said that long ago, when the men from the west had crossed the mountains to the uncharted new lands there was a fierce battle. The new lords from the west had met some natives, these natives were savage beasts. They spoke in foul tongue and they used weapons that struck fear into the heart of the most hardened soldier. Or so the records said. The lords from the west triumphed, and the natives were driven away. The lords then constructed their towns, each of the great cities was founded by one of the first lords. Tenell was one of them, founded by the Lord Tenell.

The road had been quiet for a long time, the last person that had passed was a merchant, he had feverishly tried to sell Feiln some wares. But the young outcast, did not want anything, even if he did he had no coin to pay for it. So he continued alone as the day grew to an end, but there came a steady noise from behind him. As the sound grew nearer Feiln could tell it was a horse. He looked behind and eventually a rider approached. He was clad in a dark blue cloak. There was a symbol on the breast that Feiln had not seen before. It was strange, foreign.
‘Greetings stranger,’ the man called. ‘Is this the road to Tenell?’
‘Sure is,’ Feiln said as the rider drew alongside Feiln. ‘What brings you to Tenell? You are not from around here, are you?’
‘No mate, I come from far away, over the mountains to the west.’
‘So why you goin’ to Tenell?’
‘I have been sent,” the rider looked around nervously. ‘I have been sent by Vinsen, I must find something. Don’t you worry about though. What takes you to Grand city?’
Feiln sighed and was about to tell the tale of his father’s death. When the rider’s cloak fell back slightly, revealing a stunning sword. Feiln gasped, ‘you’re a knight!’ Only a knight would have a blade like that.
‘Quiet man! Don’t say that, there are things trying to find me that would make your blood run cold. I have been on the roads for many months. Why they haven’t found me yet, I know not. Don’t go sayin’ that again.’
Feiln nodded. The trees around the road began to rustle as the wind picked up. They quickly lost their sense of shelter, and they became more like the walls of a trap.

The knight appeared to be some ten years older than Feiln. He was muscular, yet lithe. He had short dark hair and dark eyes. Feiln had never mat anyone from over the mountains. The People of the west and east had drifed apart since the mountains were first crossed. Strange times indeed if a knight of the West was in the east. Vinsen, Feiln had a vague memory of the name, but he realy had no idea who this Vinsen was.

Feiln and the Knight walked in silence for some time, until the two came across the ruins of an ancient fortress alongside the road. ‘Its amazing,’ the Knight said. ‘This was not built by the men of West, was it?’
Feiln shook his head. ‘My father told me that, there were people here long before the west arrived.’
‘Its truly amazing,’ the knight spoke again. ‘Its like no fortress I have ever seen.’
The building was mostly crumbled down, but the few sections of the walls that were left standing were stunning. Arches seemed to flow into the walls. The walls were not so high yet they looked huge. The two men wandered into the broken fortress. In no places was there any roof left. It was mostly just the outside wall, and a courtyard near the center. After a long while the knight asked feiln if he would mind if the two of them camped together tonight. It had been a long time since the knight had had any form of company.

So the two lit a small fire amid the fallen stones of the ancient fortress. Feiln had offered to keep watch for most the Knight, as it was obvious that the Knight had been without a proper sleep for quite some time.

Feiln sat propped up against a stone, and watched the stars; the clouds that had been in the sky that day had blown away. The Knight was not asleep. He had never really wanted any company that night. The Knight had seen Feilns bow, and hoped he could use it, because the knight suspected they would find him soon. Tonight maybe, possibly tomorrow. Almost certainly before he would get to Tenell. And when they did come, he would hate to face them alone.
