Subject: Only for newbies!!!! "Filik DC10+ Hack Manual"

A few days ago I created a text file for a couple of DC10+ owning friends of mine, who wanted to know how to install and use Filik's famous hack. Maybe newbies in DC10+ to Dc30+ patching have some benefit reading it, so here it is.

BTW sorry for the louzy verbs, English isn't my native language you see.

INSTALLING AND USING FILIK'S MIRO INSTANT VIDEO HACK:

1:
On a "clean" system, install DC10 drivers & Studio software (from the cdrom included in the DC10+ package).
If you've already installed Studio and the drivers of course you can skip this step...

Note a:
Yes, before you can upgrade to the latest DC10+ drivers on a clean system, you always first have to install the drivers from the cdrom. That's because the upgrades are NOT full installation setups, but just (the name says it all...) upgrades from the drivers on your cdrom.

Note b:
Perhaps it's possible to install DC10+ drivers without installing the Studio software, but why bother?
Although Premiere is much better in EDITTING your video stuff then Studio, IMO the latter still is the best software for CAPTURING video. With the newest drivers it acts much like famous AVI_IO (in fact Markuss Zing, developer of AVI_IO, participated in 'perfectioning' the latest Pinnacle 1.06.4 DC10+ drivers).
Using the Studio software for capturing gives you the benefit of automatic multiple 2 Gb file creation while making long captures (up to 77 minutes or so), and perfect audio/video sync (well at least on my system...).
And Studio is for free, coz you already have it on the package deal cdrom, now don't you.

2:
Now upgrade to the newest DC10+ drivers (1.06.4 final or beta), that is if your cdrom has pre 106.4 version drivers.
Some say the 1.06.4-Final drivers has bugs. They prefer the 1.06.4-BETA drivers wich appearantly dont have those bugs.
Well, I dont know if all of that is really true 'cause the 1.06.4-Final drivers seems work just fine for me.

You can download 1.06.4 FINAL here:
ftp://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/SDCv106.EXE

You can download 1.06.4 BETA here:
ftp://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/SDCv106beta.EXE
(if it's still available)

3:
Install Adobe Premiere (5.1c, 6.0 beta or 6.0 retail, don't know about 4.2 and earlier)

Note a:
With the earlier versions of Filik's hack you had to install MiroInstant Video from the DC30+ drivers setup. If the DC30+ driver setup couldn't find any Premiere version on the system, it refused to install MiroInstant Video. So you had to install Adobe Premiere before you could install MIV from the DC30+ drivers.
This is no longer true: you call install Premiere at any time now and copy Filik's hacked files (wich include MIV) to Premiere's sub folders whenever you want.

Note b:
Attention: Pinnacle has confirmed that Miro Instant Video from their latest DC30+ drivers doesn't work well with Premiere 6.0 (Retail) and, after a lot complaints, has promised to write new ones. They should be available in April 2001.
I guess that (since Filik's patch turns our DC10+ somewhat into a DC30+) it's well possible that Premiere also doesn't like the DC10+ + Miro Instant Video combination . I dont know for sure though, so try and find out. For myself, I use a hacked version of Premiere 6.0 Beta, and this works OK. But I've read that 6 Retail seems to differ significantly from Premiere 6 Beta versions.

OK, if all the "legal" stuff is on your system you can install the hack:

4:
Temporarily kill misitray.exe
(just press ctr/alt/del and end the task "misitray")

5a:
From Filik's hack "Up to 1.06.zip", extract MISICI.DLL to your WINDOWS/SYSTEM folder
(replacing the default misici.dll)

You can download Up to 1.06.zip here: http://plugins.members.easyspace.com/dll.htm

5b:
From the same "Up to 1.06.zip", extract all files in the "SETTINGS" folder to Premiere's "Settings" folder.
(or extract the complete folder there).

5c:
From the same "Up to 1.06.zip", extract PR-MIV.PRM to Premiere's "PLUG-INS" folder

6:
Restart MISITRAY:
Start Windows Explorer, goto your Windows folder, goto the System subfolder and double-click on the file misitray.exe there (yeah yeah, I know: real patronising, but this is newbie stuff, man...)

7:
Ok, the hack is installed, but just to be sure do this:

-Check the date of the file misici.dll in your windows\\system folder.
It should be the 10th of march 2001

-Check if the file pr-miv.prm is present in the Plug-ins folder of Premiere

-Check if the settings folder of Premiere has the following files:
PAL Studio DC10+ 768x576 4MB.prs
PAL Studio DC10+ 768x576 4MB.prs
PAL Studio DC10+ 384x288 1MB.prs
PAL Studio DC10+ 384x288 1MB.prs
PAL Studio DC10+ 720x540 4MB.prs
PAL Studio DC10+ 720x540 4MB.prs

8:
Start Premiere
During startup you can see all plugins etc Premiere is "pre-loading" (at the bottom of the splash screen).
One of them should be "DC10+ Editting Mode"

9:
Choose File/New project.
In the "Load Project Settings" screen, choose one of the presets you've just copied to the settings folder:
PAL Studio DC10+ 768x576 4MB
PAL Studio DC10+ 384x288 1MB
PAL Studio DC10+ 720x540 4MB
(Note: as you can see those presets are for PAL users only. So if you have a NTSC system (f.i. USA) I guess you have to alter these presets manually, because Filik didn't include any NTSC presets in his zip file. I don't know much about NTSC though).

Back in Premiere's main screen you should see a little screen on top of Premiere's editting screens now, called "miroINSTANT Studio DC10 Plus". Do you see it? Congratulations! You've installed the hack correctly and now you'll have the famous "Miro Instant Video" plugin at your service. This means:

A:
Timeline scrubbing is smooth (without MIV it's rather jerky)

B:
With MIV you do NOT have to render the full project to a new avi in order to output to videotape. In stead of that Premiere automaticly only renders the stuff wich isn't already somewhere on your harddisk, such as transitions, titles and/or video effects, but not the cuts!. This works much, much faster!
F.I: a 25 minute Premiere project with some titles, a few transitions and video-effects is ready for outputting to tape in just a few minutes.

C:
While scrubbing and editting in Premiere your DC10+ card DOES HAVE tv/vcr output now, so you can adjust and check your edits in real time and full screen on your tv-set, in stead of viewing Studio's tiny little, postage stamp format, jerky and very low resolution edit screen.
So do yourself a favour: go get your little 15 inch bedroom tv set, place it alongside your pc monitor and hook it up to your DC10+'s output. Video editting will be much more fun now: scrubbing the timeline on your pc-monitor while viewing the scenes full screen on your tv!

Success!

===================end of manual==========================================

OK, here's some extra info:

Personally:

-I capture video with Studio (or AVI_IO)

Because with the latest 1.06.4 drivers Studio now has both perfect audio/video sync and automatic multi-file capturing (to a max of 77 minutes or so). This is IMO an very important option wich Premiere, Miro Capture or Avicap do NOT have.
Those files are by default 2 Gb of size, but in the Windows Registry (or easier: with the help of DC10REG; a freeware utility made by Jos Rooyakkers) you can even adjust their size to 1 Gb, 2 Gb or 650 Mb (wich is nice for making AVI backups on cdr material).

BTW, Dc10reg has some other nice options too. You can download it here:
http://studio.club.tip.nl

-I save stills (to BMP or JPG) with Studio.

Of course Premiere can save stills too. But strangely enough Premiere has no "flicker removal" option for a single still, an option wich dramatically improve the quality of saved bitmaps from video material. In Premiere you'll have to 'point' that particular video-effect to a complete clip in order to get de-flickered stills, while in Studio you CAN remove the flicker from a single frame while outputting to a bitmap file, so without changing Studio's project file.
Yes I know, in Premiere you CAN de-interlace a still while saving it to a bitmap, but IMO Studio's "de-flicker" option gives better quality bitmaps. So most of the time I use Studio for saving stills.
On top of that all Adobe Premiere versions -apart from 6.0 Retail- can only save to BMP, GIF or TIFF, not to the popular JPG format. Well, Studio CAN!.

-I edit video material & output to tape with Premiere

Of course Premiere has a lot more and better editting options then Studio does. But probably the main reason I'm using Premiere for editting is "Miro Instant Video" (see above) and for that you need Filik's hack.

-I make Mpeg1 or Mpeg2 files from AVI's with Premiere

A lot of Mpeg1 and/or mpeg2 compressors are also available as a "plugin" for Premiere. This has the major advantage you do NOT have to render a completely edited project to a new AVI file first (from wich a stand alone Mpeg compressor then makes the Mpeg file). No, with a Premiere Mpeg plugin you can simply output your project straight to Mpeg, in a SINGLE procedure.

Success again!
