Thousands did leave throughout the 30s. I don't "blame" anybody. It was hard to predict the severity, and many thought nothing of the sort could happen in "the land of Goethe." But that is the power of denial. Certainly many did not have the means to leave, and other countries, including the US, were less than welcoming to the refugees. People want to be left alone and not worry about politics and social issues, but it pays to spend a little time paying attention to what's going on around you.

Krystalnacht should have been the last clue.
