Today we know the Holocaust happened, those before it did not. There were indications that mass murders were occuring as it progresse, but that was no different from Jewish history up to that point.

The difference is in thinking it may be more of the same (organized pogroms) not the systematic murder of an entire group of people. Europe has historically killed Jews. This is a fact. The Nazis were not the first (and unfortunately not the last) to do this. There were even examples of entire communities being wiped out, but never on this scale.

The 1890s were important because of the change in anti-Jewish feelings. Now it was linked to science, where before it was linked to religion. If you can convert, you can avoid attacks. However once it was racial, your Jewishness could not be changed, even after conversion.

The early 1900s were still good for the Jews. Of course incidents occured, just like they always had, but things were still better than other times. It was not until the return to the ghettos that things really changed for the Jews. OF course this had the ring of historical separation and was not an ominous sign (except in hindsight).

You must remember all the little things the Nazis did to help the hope remain in the hearts of Jews. This was done to keep them from leaving so they could be killed. The goal was extermination, not expulsion (of course this changed too after the beginning of the war, the question still is whether or not this was intentional misdirection or a change of heart).
