Subject: Ugly, ugly talkback...
In reply to: Jared 's message, "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly #52" on 19:27:48 08/20/00 Sun

'52 already? You know it only seems like a couple of weeks ago we were celebrating number 50.'
Sorry, I see those shiny numbers and I leap on 'em.

'Ratbat is the Jack Kirby to my Stan Lee, Quentin Blake to my Roald Dahl.'
Heck. Wow. High praise indeed. Aw, I'm gettin' all emotional now...
Seriously, thank, Jar. And ya know I couldn't do it if I weren't both a friend and a fan. Actually, I probably could, I just wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much.
Of course, after that, it would be remiss of me if I didnae mention that Jared himself has covered my arse in return when I once covered his, and provided the world with that week's Ugly Ugly Talkback.
I already gave a li'l retrospective of my own when the column hit the golden number, so this time I'll just add to the flow of congratulations that the column has reached its first birthday.
Here's to GBU: Year Two!

'We plugged this book by Nick Earls and proclaimed its greatness and earlier this week so did the Children's Book Council of Australia when they announced it as Book of the Year in the Older Readers category.'
And well they should. Not only is this a great book, but it fills that category like few others do, and many more should. Too many books aim at the higher teenage/young adult market, but are really just kids' books with a few swear words or adult novels that weren't long enough and didn't have too many swear words. An actual novel written at the style and level that should feature in this category doesn't crop up as often as it should, so it'd good to see that the good ones are being recognised.

'...plus for the kitch value you can't go past wrestler The Rock on backing shouts.'
Wow, a few scenes in Voyager and now some backing shouts. Right talented devil, isn't he?

Guest good for this week:
Video Ezy's big ex-rental sale day - Dags, American Pie, Seniors and two Deep Space Nine videos all for not much more than one of those along might have cost, and that was just from popping into the Dickson store, so a dedicated effort from someone might turn up all kinds of stuff. They have these sales every nine months or so, so keep your eye out, children. It could be worth your while.

'Overreaction? Quite possibly. A plot to remove Stan from an ailing tabloid TV show? Could be.'
Daft? Certainly. So this bloke had the two big ol' newsmakers the country was watching right there in his lap and he let them go? D'oh! Now I bet that next time there's an international sporting event held that everyone's sick to death of hearing about the troubles of, he'll have his channel screen it, too.

'In Canberra 4 shows of The Beauty Queen on Leenane were cancelled after Tracey Mann almost came to tears at the closing of opening night.'
Tracey Mann! Thank you. I've been trying to remember her name for days now. Now if only I can actually remember the title of the 'TV special' (ie, telemovie) she was in all those years ago that I wanted to see again, I might be happier still.

'Well besides sending lusty email to one Prince William and getting her hand slapped by the Palace.'
Now, not only has he got lusty missives from Brittany, but apparently his family reads his mail...ooh-er.

Guest bad:
Trying to teach an internet class without the internet - And Tech Services think users are dumb...

'We don't understand Survivor or why people watch it.'
But then, face it, we live in Australia? How are people getting on on a island out there with a big ol' desert on it? Let's look out the window and find out!

'Do I have the attention span? Will Jared get a girlfriend beforehand?'
Race ya. :)

Guest ugly:
Thinking up a whole load of great plot ideas when you're just about to fall asleep - Because no matter what you tell yourself, you won't remember them. Sorry, Stephanie, we're flying blind again.
