The Good, The Bad and The Ugly #45

THE GOOD

‘The Filth and The Fury’ - This new film is dirty, dirty, dirty and we loved every minute of it. The Sex Pistols may have been a technically dreadful band but who really cares?

‘The Perfect Storm’ – It may be set on the ocean and not have a happy ending but that is where the similarities between this film and ‘Titanic’ end. Directed with ompf by the man who brought us the brilliant submarine film ‘Das Boot’ and starring an excellent cast it is well worth going to see, even with the GST.

‘Gone in 60 seconds’ – Check your brain at the door and enjoy.

‘The Odd Couple’ – Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau in perhaps the best flatmate comedy of all time.

‘Bowfinger’ – Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy in a black comedy about what it takes to make a movie if you have no money, no connections, no equipment, only a cluless bunch of friends and some illegal immigrants as your crew . Add into the mix a tight script, a loose Heather Graham and you have a great film.

Japanime – August 23 –27, Dendy Cinemas, Sydney. Five days of Japanese animation from the meek, Kimba the White Lion, to the grand, Princess Mononoke. Yea hah!

Meg Ryan single again – Hey we can dream.

The Human Genome Project – Perhaps the greatest scientific undertaking in human history came to an end this week with the announcement that scientists have completely mapped the human genome. We now know the location and function of each gene on our DNA. Pretty impressive really. As a side note the scientists were also happy to announce that they found no racial differences between the codes. Thus sinking that old white supremacy ship once and for all.

Scully in that black dress – Fwoah! Actually Gillian Andersen in any nice dress gets a Fwoah from us.

‘Machismo’ – It’s the new EP from Gomez and it’s a corker. They’ve gone for something different and it pays off in spades so much that the title track is also the second track on the soundtrack for ‘Gone in Sixty Seconds’.

Wizard of Oz + Dark Side of the Moon – It’s an urban legend that seems to have some basis, that if you cue the two up exactly then the Pink Floyd album acts as a soundtrack. Well the cable channel Turner Classic Movies has decided to put the theory to test by showing the movie while the album plays on the SAP channel. For those of us not stateside the hint is to press play on the CD when the MGM lion roars for the third time.

THE BAD

Damir Dokic – Being a young female on the International Tennis circuit is hard enough, but we feel sorry for Jelena Dokic who has to put up with he father Damir. He’s currently spending his time getting drunk and insulting just about everyone at Wimbledon, while his daughter fights her way through the rounds and through the angry public. Makes you wonder who the adult is.

Merrick Watts – Our dear friend was a very naughty boy this week when he pressed the red button he wasn’t supposed to, thus shutting down the national youth radio station Triple J for almost ten minutes.
Only one thing to say Mez. Helllllooooooooo Australia!

‘Survivor’ – Could TV get any worse?

‘Shipwrecked’ – Yes it can and trust the British to be the ones to do it.

Quiz Night: The Final Encounter – It may be the end of an era but we feel that we showed it out in style and wit. Of course now we have nothing to do on a Tuesday night. Guess we’ll just go to the pub then.

‘History’ – Very bad according to Stockport College who have banned the term ‘history’ from being used on campus and in any university publications. Why? Because they think it is a sexist term. Other words and phrases banned from use include ‘Slaving over a hot stove’, ‘lady’ or ‘gentleman’ and of course the blatantly disgusting ‘nitty gritty’. Huh? Why? Because they think it means to have sex with a slave woman. Yeah….sure…….We can see that……..Not!

The death of Walter Matthau – Another legend passes and we are the worse for it. We salute you Walter.

Having your car blown up, twice – Earlier this week Endre Pasztor's car blew up when it was parked behind a car targeted by shady crooks. Bad luck right? Not if you ask Endre. You see last year he lost his previous car when it was parked across the road from a car bomb. Endre has vowed to walk everywhere for the rest of his life.

Tommy Tavita – Love all those media stories announcing Tommy Tavita being offered a part in Star Wars Episode 2. Idiots. Tommy Tavita is the character actor Jay Lagaia plays on the Australian TV Show ‘Water Rats’. Whatever happened to research? Seems nowadays everyone just copies everything straight from the web.

THE UGLY

www.dds.nl/~beards – ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH. Heh Heh Heh. ARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH.

The death of 8 people at a Pearl Jam concert – It’s a tragedy that will probably open a big bag of trouble.

The GST – Sure it may be only 48 hours old, but my last 48 hours have been mostly full of pain and anguish caused solely by this little bugger of a tax. We give it a big fat ugly so far.
