Bio - YOHANNES SHARRIFF
Voted ”Critics Choice” BEST SPOKEN WORD ARTIST of 1999 by Creative Loafing, Yohannes Sharriff works tirelessly to elevate the art of spoken word. A native of Memphis, TN, Yohannes has resided in Atlanta, GA for eighteen years. Author of T.H.I.N.C.:(Teaching Humanity In New Consciousness) The Chrysalis of Evolution, Yohannes submitted T.H.I.N.C. to the President of the United States, to further the dialogue on race. According to Bill Clinton’s Initiative on Race, “The issues that this book (T.H.I.N.C.) brings to the forefront are important in our efforts to achieve the goals set forth by the President for the Initiative. This work will serve as a solid resource for us as we begin to examine these critical issues.”
In 1997, Yohannes became one of the youngest Black males ever to run for Mayor of Atlanta. His grassroots campaign provided a needed community voice, especially for south DeKalb County, GA where he resides. A true family success story, The D.I.S.H. (Dot’s Information Service Hotline) and its companion web site at the dish.ws were created during the historic 1997 mayoral campaign. Dedicated to the dialog on race, the online newsletter, The D.I.S.H. has delivered “unbossed and unbought news and information you
use” since 1998.
A five-year veteran of the underground Atlanta spoken word scene, Yohannes has performed with the likes of Les Nubian, Dionne Ferris, Saul Williams, India Arie and David Nelson (creator of the Last Poets). Yohannes won Jomandi Production’s 1999 City Wide Poetry Slam, Grand Marnier 1999 and Martell’s 2000 Speak Easy Poetry Slams. As a member of the 2001 Moorepics Slam team, Yohannes traveled to Seattle, WA as an Atlanta representative in the 2001 National Poetry Slam.
Apart of the renaissance bubbling in Atlanta, Yohannes starred in two plays, Soul Food or Fast Food and My Soul Untitled. Taking on the challenge of acting, directing and promotions, in 2001, Yohannes co-wrote and co-produced, with Aqiyl Thomas, a spoken word play entitled The Block; Poetic Asylum. Currently, Yohannes is working on a second play, The Hustle; Hotter Than Fish Grease , which he is co-writing and co-producing with Malik Salaam. In addition to completing his forth book of poetry, entitled The Red Clay Diary, in 2002 Yohannes is producing his first solo music project.
With the impending release of his fourth book of poetry and his first album, Yohannes has been creating an undeniable buzz as the featured poet for A Pen and a Paper (a spoken word tour of college campuses). So, brace for impact,
because the next great underground movement is here.
