He picked idly at the bottles label, though he had yet to raise it to his lips again. He listened to her story, nodding once in response. Wasn't uncommon for small town people to feel smothered there, everyone knowing when you sneezed wrong or if you'd had a little too much to drink last night. The exact opposite was life in the big city, where you could get shitfaced every night at a different bar and no one would be the wiser. Those first few months, that first year, could be overwhelming, humbling. You didn't matter in the city, no one cared about you. He liked Cascade because it was somewhere in between. A close community, but not so close that you knew everyone, or everyone knew your business. And being a newer addition to the town meant that no one knew his history. They only knew what he told them, and they didn't pry for more than you were comfortable giving. They trusted you to be true to your word here... A nice change from having to prove yourself at every turn.

"It used to be a lot bigger, busyer. When we were kids and spent summers here, it always seemed there were people everywhere. Nothing like the big city, but more than we were used to. Guess its died down over the years, the shitty economy hit hard here over the last few years from what I hear. It seems like its coming back, though. I've seen a steady increase in the local numbers since I've been here. Center of towns about six blocks long, maybe eight across... Lots of folks live outside of town on more property, lots of open land once you hit the edge of town... Great hiking up in the mountains, not far to drive to get there... Miles of trails to ride, and unlimited options if you don't stick to the trails"

He liked endurance riding himself, enjoyed the cross country aspect of it. Finally he took a sip of his beer, cradling it in his large hand as he continued to pick at the label.

I'm flat on the floor with my head down low
Where the sky can't rain on me anymore
Don't knock on my door 'cause I won't come
I'm hidin' from the storm 'til the damage is done
