Hey I didn't even see this thread!
I just posted somethng about my feelings on this ep over on the OS so I hope you all don't mind if I transfer it here.
I also want to add that I understand IG's feelings about adoption. From what I here in some states there is a 6 month period where the other can change her mind. One thing that could challenge this adoption in the courts is that it doesn't seem like Mulder was notified. He could object. And Islandgirl do you know that this whole adoption took place in less than a week? Is that at all possible? I hope M&S get the baby back but even that would be tragic because of the innocent adoptive parents. It makes Scully look even nore unthinking. If they turn out to be bad guys like Melissa is suggesting than that makes Scully look stupid for not bein cautious yet again. Either way Scully comes off looking very bad.

See my coments below for more:

I'm a bit late here but I've been reading through some of this thread and everyone's pretty much covered it. As you well know, we knew way in advance about the "WILLIAM'S BEING ADOPTED!" story because of unavoidable spoilers but I really didn't expect it to turn out this way. Some people over at my site who don't come here and had no spoiler warning are just flabbergasted. The ending of this episode seemed so final. I couldn't really believe it. I just hope to heck it's not the end of the William story because it was so wrong.

What gets me is this whole thing makes Scully seems like the most irresponsible person on the planet. She purposely wanted to have a child and specifically asked Mulder to father it. Whether the child came about naturally or by other means, her intent was to have a child with her and Mulder as the parents. This was a dangerous stuation from the get go considering what these two people have been involved in for the past 7 years. Her own sister was killed because of Scully's job. She must have known that a baby's existence in the world she travelled in would be difficult. So why is she so surprised now that she can't keep him safe? She acted like a kid who wanted something NOW without thinking of the consequences down the line. Now I don't fault her for wanting a child but she didn't think things through. They've got her behaving sill like a Season One Scully who had no clue about aliens. She should know better now. And it really irks me that she felt ok with protecting him when she knew there as something odd about him. And now that he's apparently "normal" she shops him off.

I have also been wondering what happened to Spotnitz's (I think it was him) assurance that the big story this season would be HOW Scully was able to get pregnant. What hapened to that? We've had none of it. Just a bizarre baby spinning mobiles being kidnaped by cults. Why did William have to be "special"? The end of Existence was so beautiful with Mulder telling Scully that the aliens didn't want him because he wasn't what they thought he was. I thougt that meant that he turned out to be just a plain old baby created through their love. That was the perfect outcome. The X-File that turned out to be a non X-File. Why did the baby suddenly get freaky and now everyone wants him? I trusted what Mulder believed. He's almost always right.
I agree with most of everyone's commments about the adoption and how ridiculous it was for Scully to just believe Spender outright so I won't repeat here.
I will say that inspite of all that I thought DD did a great job directing it. I loved his personal touches. Revisting Detour. You gotta know I'd love that! And that erotic scene with Scully examining Spender could only come from DD. And Scully fixing her shoe in the Hoover Building hallway. DD at least knows how to make her seem human while CC and gang do their best to wreck her.

I'm still hoping for the best for The Truth. What else can I do?
