Some writers start with the end and work their way back to the beginning. Some have an idea where they are going but leave it loose and see where the story takes them. I like comic books, very excited for the Spiderman film, but that is one medium in which the story will never end. A storyline ends but Spiderman or Batman or Superman or the X-Men have to continue on forever.

Many an American TV show from the 50s to the 80s never had an ending per se because they were often cancelled after a season ended and haven't prepared for such a thing. So it feels like the shows go on and on since they never got anywhere. The Fugitive had an ending but most never did. In recent years, probably due to fan complaints, shows do make an ending although many have been unsatisfying. It must be harder when your show is way past its prime.

Now I often think of Babylon 5 and its creator J. Michael Straczynski. He created the show as a "novel" for TV. He had a 5 year story arc at the beginning. Now I'm sure he had to change things along the way, it never comes out perfect. He replaced the lead at the end of the first season, a sign of a show in trouble. But he got by and finsihed his story, although he left open some things for sequels shows which have all failed so far. He ended the show with an episode that jumped ahead 20 years and had no action to speak of. The lead character says goodbye to everyone and the whole ep felt like a huge goodbye to the cast and the space station Babylon 5 itself is shut down and destroyed now that its obselete. The universe he vreated was open for more but the characters we followed during the 5 year run got their endings in that last ep. Star Trek shows don't do that as they always want to leave the characters open for movie appearences.

I think CC just started out with an episodic concept. GA's real life pregnancy forced him to create something of an ongoing storyline to have her out of the story for awhile. From there, he did create a fascinating mytharc but it always furstrated us as we never got to the answers. That was sort of the point of the show but some answers could have been found instead of constant frustration. After so many years, the weight of all the arc gave us broke under itself. I dare anyone to lay it all out in a way that makes sense. So my feeling is unless CC becomes absolutely brilliant soon, the finale will not live up to the hype.

I'm hoping I'm wrong. I know its going to be serious, the LG will be missed.
