Participated in an Ed. cruise in winter of '71 (Feb.?)
Flew from Toronto to Gatwick, to Venice and sailed to
Malta, Istanbul, Greece (Katakalon/Santorini) and Naples
with a large group of students from S. Ont. and a few from
Scotland. It was a culture shock all round both on board
and on shore. Fabulous memories. Met up with a former
teacher in Malta who took a few of us on a tour and out for
a fabulous dinner. Tasted/choked on Miles Fiores (sp?) in
Venice. Saw Russian subs practising manouvers in the Med.
Saw a volcano erupting one night. Rode donkeys on Santorini. Learned about 'muster' stations. Bought ouzo and puzzle rings in the covered bazarre in Istanbul which was packed with dapper young men who all knew someone in Montreal, and there were young boys selling shirts that were piled high over their arms. Broke my glases and had them welded back together by the radio operator - thank you! Was told that I looked like John Lennon in Malta because I wore octogonal glasses, choker necklace and a shag (layered) bushy haircut like he did. Ate food each day that was totally new to me and loved it all. Went for a ride among olive trees in Greece. Danced every night in the 'veranda' to music from England that was still not known in Canada. Sang a duet with my sister 'The English
Sisters' in the talent show on the S.S. Uganda. The Scottish students expected to see nuns! Too many
memories to list them all.
