Came across this terrific site - was just browsing "UGANDA The story of a very special ship" which I've had for a couple of years now.
I spent two trips as SAP on the pax side 1976 - 1977 and the 1977 - Jan 1978 to Malta Drydocks.
Wonderful life enhancing memories - and more so at this time of year. Does anyone remember "Rindicella" the panto? She lived in a coran frontry with two sad blisters - sadly, that's all I can remember...and I compared it all!!
I was actually looking for a decent print to add to my gallery of those of other P&O ships on which I served. I have a good one in the straits off Copenhagen taken from Oriana, however, it is a bit distant. What is the print quality of "Print Number 2" as advertised in the shop?
Look forward to hearing from others, and "Sailing" by Rod Stewart still puts a chill up my neck with memories of sailing from port and pupils in floods of tears - Ron Furlong - all your fault!!

I was lucky enough to sail on a school cruise in April 77.
I remember it cost something like £150 which was a lot of money back then and only 8 pupils at my school could afford to go so we joined up with another school near-by that only had 5 going and their teacher.

What fun it was. We flew out to Naples and back from Venice and yes, we were always allowed a half day exploring on our own...would they let kids do that now...dont think so.

I was 14 at the time and bedtimes were staggerd allowing 15 and up to stay up a little later and infact if you were 16 or over you could smoke in certain areas IF your parents signed an agreement form!!!!!! which i remember there were a fair few.

God the food was awful, but it was so much fun.

I have just been talking with my 5 year old about the school cruise I went on and where I went,so we searched the web for pictures of the Uganda and ended up here! I knew she was scrapped within a few years of me sailing on her but had no idea she was wrecked in a typhoon, sad or what! I think I'm going to have to make a visit into my loft for the slide show I put together for my school and any other info I can find,I can't exactly remember the year we went but I signed up for the next one for the following year as soon as I got back but within a short time it was cancelled due to the Falklands.I went with Wintringham school in Grimsby if anyone is out there I'd like to hear from them!

Just happened accross this site - like everyone else, brings back great memories! I was on a Xmas time cruise [81 I think] sailed from Naples to Cyrpus, Greece, Antalya in Turkey,Israel Haifa [Jerusalem/Bethlehem Xmas day]and Malta. We were from Gowerton School in Swansea, South Wales. Us boys dormed right in the bows it seemed, way way down in the bowells! Shared with some older lads from Birmingham / Solihull - Lew Onions and his mates. I was the lanky geek who was always wearing a flat cap! Remember watching Rocky 3 in the cinema, getting drunk on little tinnies of weak lager, smuggling bottles of ouzo on board after stopping in Greece [I KNOW it was supposed to be educational...!] A fantastic experience and memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. I was genuinley upset when I found out that she was being scrapped. I used a knife from the canteen to unscrew some signs to take home as souvenirs - I've looked high and low for them recently, but they've dissapeared..shame!

We had been due to go on a Summer cruise on the Nevassa, but she was pulled out of service Christmas 74. Our school - Gosford Hill - was lucky to get places on the Black Sea cruise. I remember it most because it was my first time away from home. I loved every minute of it! Who can forget the stones rattling down the pipes first thing in the morning, the hands that grabbed the trays in the canteen, the last night disco and the last morning - 'Leaving On a Jet Plane' by Peter Paul and Mary (I think!). Be interested to hear from anyone else who was on that Cruise! One more fantastic memory - Dolphins swimming alongside the ship as we left the Black Sea for the Aegean! Pure magic!

I remember going on the Uganda in 1981. We flew from Gatwick on a skytrain to Malta. I think the itinerary was - Malta, volos, istanbul, varna, constana, trabzon, athens. It was a marvelous holiday. For some reason the fried eggs in the canteen, and the watered down coke in club area was awful !

Hi - Was anyone else on the cruise that was requisitioned for the Falklands War? I still remember the captain asking everyone to go to their forms for an announcement where we were told that we had to make our way to Naples as soon as possible. I remember bartering in Alexandria and the gooly gooly man who looked like he was tearing the heads off small chicks during his 'magic act!' It would be great to hear other people's memories/

I was due to go on the trip with my school Willowfield in Walthamstow, London when she was taken to the Falklands. We did sail on her Dec/Jan 82/83. Cannot remember everywhere we went but I know we did stop at Bethlehem on Christmas Day, Cyprus, Gythion and flew back from Malta. The main thing I remember is arriving at Naples dock at night and setting sail shortly after into the worst storn I have ever experienced! It seems like everyone on board was sick, then some more after that! Toilets were blocked up, even the sinks and the plastic cups from the water fountains! When we got to our first destination(?) I remember looking back and the side of the ship was a disgusting pinky/ orange colour!

I sailed as deck cadet after the Falklands and before her redeployment as a troop carrier. Saw this site years ago. Interesting to see some names I remember. Alana !
A really fun time before I had to work for a living. Spent most of my time as Staff cadet under Rons watchful eye !! ( I still recall those tannoys from Ron "Staff cadet ring 05 ")
The rest of my time, well they were just great.
Such a great adventure for young people sadly missed today.
The asmats were right as staff cadet it was a folly to reply to all the letters !!
Such an education for me too !!

I joined her in Howaldswerkes as deck cadet 3 weeks before trials as schoolship and was with her through to about August/Sept that year (I think we did about 11 cruises without a break). Any of the other first cruise crew around? love to hear from you.

Luckily got to go on two consecutive year's cruises, one of which was the unfortunate Falklands disembarkation.

After 27 years, I've still got the coffee mug I bought in the gift shop on the last day sitting in my kitchen.

Never forget the smell of the kitchens - doubly bad when you feel sea sick, plus that unfortunate day of huge swells when some poor girl was ill over the side and someone even more unfortunate caught it on the deck below. Strange the memories that stick in the mind.

Great times. It opened my eye up to the world. I wouldn't dream of letting my kids go bargain hunting on their own in a bazarre in Alexandria today, but it sure was fun at the time.

Oh to do it all again.

Memories, memories...
Left Tilbury and sailed up the North Sea, then through the Keil Canal to Travemunde and Keil. From there thro the Baltic to Leningrad, optional trip to Moscow, back to Leningrad then off to see the sights of Stockholm. Finally it was Copenhagen and Tivoli Gardens, and back to Blighty.

We were blessed with good weather all the way. Memories included being met by a Russian military band, the Russians throwing hundreds of badges at us when we departed. The Winter palace, and being told that to look at every exhibit for 10 secs would take 700 years. The Leningrad Youth Club in a palace, winning on a one armed bandit in Tivoli Gardens and being stuck with a pocket full of coins with holes in the middle. Spending the coins on a certain type of mag - they did the rounds in the dorms lol.

We had a great bunch from Downham Schools - my old friend actually married the girl he met on that cruise. Happy days and all for £50....

Seen a volcano erupt. Got shunted I think in Turkey.
Went to Italy, Crete Corsica, Great Storm during the journey. Got the train from Cumbria. Oh and the Corinth Canal ` remember that too`. Food not great, Dorms metal
with white sheets - but had the time of my life - loved the whole experience. Something very special.

I was reading about the student cruise ship April 6,07 and the students that were rescued in Greece and remembered my trip on a similar line. I was on the SS Uganda cruise 974 (I found my original itinerary) in March 1979 with a small group of Canadians from British Columbia and Alberta. We flew into Heathrow and then to Malta where we boarded the ship. We sailed into Gythion and then to Alexandria for a tour to Cairo and to see the Nile. When leaving the port the next morning (March 26 - my birthday), the pilot jumped ship and the captain had to take the boat out of port himself. Sadly enough, he made contact with the rocks and we sailed for two days to Athens so the boat could be put into dry dock. I remember the staff telling us not to worry about sinking - there was so much traffic on the Mediterranian that we would be rescued before the ship went down.
We missed seeing Antalya, Rhodes, Skiathos and Venice but we didn't miss the food on board. Neworld Educational Cruises put us up in a hotel in Athens (it was heaven!), fed us and toured us extensively through all tourist sights including the Acropolis and a day boat trip to some small island where one of our group got food poisoning on the ferry and had to hospitalized.
Although we had our share of issues during the cruise, it certainly was the trip of a lifetime.

I was on the Uganda during the above time. It was my birthday whilst on board. We were from Laira Green in Plymouth and flew in Athens, saw the Parthenon, then went to Rhodes, sailed to Alexandria in Egypt, did the pyramids. Then up to Sicily to view and returned to the UK via Naples. Was anyone else on this. Memory fading fast.
Did see some boy run over by a bus whilst taking photo's of the Sphinx. He was alright, no damage.

i was due to go on the Uganda in May 1982, just before i was due to go she was sent to the Falklands- all the war meant to me at the time was missing my cruise! I remember watching her in the war hoping that she'd come back in one piece and i'd be able to go on her. Luckily i went in the November we flew to Venice and went to Dubrovnick, Rhodes, Cyprus, Israel,Bodrum and Malta. Whilst we were on board we got the news that she was going to go back to the falklands. Luckily for me we chose the November cruise as we had been offered that one and one the following January - which we probably wouldn't have been able to go on.

Years later i saw her when she was moored up in Falmouth before being sold for scrap. It was heart breaking to she this beautiful ship in the state she was in. It brought back onderful memories of my cruise. I really wanted to go on and walk arounf her one last time, but unfortunately no one was allowed to.

23 years on i still have fond memories of the cruise - surviving for days on jelly babies cos the food was in edible. Midnight feasts on Jaffa cakes and then turkish delight. what a great time

The anniversary of the Falklands War made me think of this trip again. We started out from Venice and stopped in at Sparta (port of Gythion) and Alexandria before re-routing overnight to Naples. We were supposed to call on Rhodes and Antalya I think.

I was from an Irish school (I think we were the only Irish children onboard) and we couldn't join in on the Rule Britannia singing in Naples because we didn't know the words! (I don't think we were that political at 13).

I kept a journal so I know the food was awful and the accom pretty basic. We stayed in Chichester dorm and listened to Layla on the juke box while watching a rocker chick English girl dance. I had a great time. Can't believe it's 25 years ago!

Other memories include P&O pork pies, the Gully man in Alexandria, Coca Cola written in Arabic, a guide with one eye in the Cairo museum and drying octopus in Greece.

Sailed from Southampton to Gibraltar, Oporto (Portugal), Tenerife (I think), Maderia.

Went with Belfast Royal Academy and just remember everyone being real sick (especially round Bay of Biscay). Food awful.

Remember smoking in taxi in Gibaltrar on way ot see Barbary Apes. Feeling really grown up!

Swimming in Tenerife and nearly drowning!

Fond memories. Took photos and never got them developed. Big regret.

Just been looking at the P&O site for their new liner ,

What a ship that`s going to be, talk about floating city.
Looking at the virtual tours and videos it looks like something from the great days of cruising.

Have fond memories of Gosford Hill School, Kidlington's school cruise April 1974. We flew to Naples to join Uganda, saw Pompeii, then on to Greece to visit Olympia. Next stop was Crete, but couldn't land because of bad weather (although I seem to remember the teachers and the 6th form pupils managed to sneak off in the evening(!). Visited Tunis, then Gibraltar, then home. She didn't look quite like the photos when we first saw her, but by the time we had to leave, I knew I would never forget her. Very sad ending to a ship that had brought so much pleasure to so many people.

Thank you for a great site.
Makes one realise how important events can be to individuals and then heartening to find it is a shared experience for many.
My memories.
Was March/April, I'd guess around 1981.
Night flight, I think the plane was called 'Metro' and we arrived to a sunny morning in Split, Yugoslavia (MIG fighters at the airport).
Olympia - Greece.
Alexandria - Egypt. People throwing coins at men on the tug (they encouraging more!). Coach trip up Nile delta to Cairo (very poor). Cairo Museum and Mohammed Ali mosque. Giza pyramids and trip back across desert at night.
Hyfia - Israel. Past Jericho, Dead Sea, Jerusalem (Jewish couple let us take pictures of them in bridal dress), Bethlehem.
Kos - cancelled (force 10 gale!). Sailed through Santorini instead.
Venice - AC/DC on tourists tape player in St. Marks square - great!
Generally weather was excellent (must have been 30C in Egypt).
We were in 'deep' dorm down by the anchor chain.
Ship smelt of Asian spices.
Dodgy green drinks!
Best wishes to all who enjoyed the cruises and thanks to anyone involved from the SS Uganda etc.

I cruised aboard the Uganda in summer 1979 departing Dundee and calling Rotterdam, Oporto, Gibraltar, Casablanca and Vigo. I was only 14 at the time and it gave me my first taste of travel, although I wasn't overly keen on the cruise experience: while I have visited over 50 contries since, I have never cruised again. We toured the Med in '78, flying to Naples and spending 2 weeks visiting Rome, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Athens, Venice, Santorini etc. So many memories.....
Deciding to hire taxi's to take us to Vesuvius before the ship left. Got back to the port to discover that someone had been left behind! Playing table tennis on a rolling pitching deck. Not leaning over the side incase someone above spat on you. Girls smuggling Ouzo on board and ending up in the medical for 3 days. Late night disco's. Vodka in the dorm. Interesting meals and milk we were sure came from goats. Playing football with local kids in one of the stadiums in Pompeii as they thought we were the England U15 squad! The Transport strike in Athens that left hubdreds of school parties stranded in the flea market. Some fool blowing the candles out on the Alter of St Peter's in the Vatican. Plastic dog turd carefully placed on a statue in one of the pallaces in Venice. Jane Thownsend snogging the socks off one of our party but being overcome by seasickness and vomiting spectacularly....yuk!How sad I was to be leaving after the best 2 weeks holiday I'd ever had. They played...Leaving on a Jet Plane and we all got misty eyed. All the stories we had to tell when we got back to school and writing/visiting the girls we had met for a couple of years afterwards........ Great memories..

Hi every one,I was on the ss ugenda 1982 when it was a troop carrier taking us to the falklands. as a soldier serving with the 1Battalion the Royal Irish Rangers , zulu company. life on board for a soldiers was very busy training from the morning you get up, we were out there just a couple of months after the war, it was still as you know very dangerous , for war could still break out, i remember some things about this great ship, we were invited to the ships restaurant a couple of us at a time, i think the ship layed this on ,but the meal was great ,a bit hard to believe to have a irst class meal before going to a war zone, also remmber the large chinnocks helicoptiers landing at the back of ship transporting troops to and from the falkland islands it was amazing, i must say i am really sad to hear that this old lady is scraped, but she will always be in the memories of all who sailed in her .

My Mum & Dad sailed out to East Africa on Uganda's Voyage 2 to East Africa in 1950. The Seaboard life must have done something as my sister was born about 9 months later.<p>
As colonial service staff, they travelled back and forth from the UK to E Africa on the Uganda and her sister ship Kenya until we left in December 1965, by which time I was on the scene. My first voyage was as a babe in arms on the Kenya in 1959 - can't remember much of it though.<p>
As we crossed the Bay of Biscay in a January Gale, the Sofas and chairs in the Lounge on the top deck were tied to the side, and I, along with at least a dozen other children had a whale of a time sliding across the parquet floor on cushions pinched from the sofas, while green gilled parents looked on.<p>
In 1972, I did a Baltic cruise from Leith to Gdansk (it rained all day), Copenhagen, and Amsterdam. The last night of the cruise ended up with near warfare going on between some of the school parties.<p>
I finished my association with the Uganda when I ran the P&O Cruises Personnel system when she was a Troopship after the Falklands. One guy on the ship was at sea for over a year without a break on the Uganda, and to my amazement had raked up 18 months paid leave as a result.<p>

Will never forget the voyage:
Southampton
Gibralter - cheap lighters and pens for sale everywhere
Malta - Force 10 storm on the way. Mars Bars smaller than UK
Piraeus/Athens - Police in long green leather coats looking mean - the Colonels were still in power at the time.
Alexandria - anti-personnel mines dropped by the side of the ship all night to put off Israeli commandos. Egypt still on a war footing against Israel. Still disappointed at that highway that runs right in front of the Pyramids,
Venice - we all bought plastic gondolas that lit up. They still sell them!
Flight back to Gatwick on a Dan Air Comet just in time for Christmas.
Some other memories:-
Loads of knives confiscated by Master at Arms
Dorms in the bowels of the ship.
First time I had tasted curry was on board
Managed to loose my voice at some stage - was made to inhale Friar's Balsalm which did the trick.
That storm between Gib and Malta was horrendous - Captain came over intercom and tried to play it cool that it was nothing but later heard he was very sick himself. Quite a bit of damage done to the ship's fittings.
Girls constantly reminded about getting their bum's pinched in places like Egypt - those were the days of mini skirts.
Early morning visit to Santorini.
Those stainless steel mess tins used for meals!
Feeling very cool in flares at the disco.
Could go on but it just shows how indelible the memories are after so long!

I was fortunate to be one of the first group of students from Nepean High School in Ottawa Canada to enjoy 2 weeks aboard the SS Uganda. What an experience it was. Several things that come to mind:
- being awakened "too" early to the strains of Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild"
- blood oranges being served and we Canadians had never heard of or seen blood oranges. We thought all of them were rotten!
-Mr. Mcnulty, an english teacher, dancing to the Rolling Stones "Can't get No Satisfaction"
-trying desperately to put on eye makeup properly with the rolling and pitching of the ship
- getting lost - temporarily - in Athens
- getting lost - again temporarily - in Santorini - ending up in the backyard of someone's home with my friend Lydia Lazarowich
-trying to find some peace and quiet - impossible in a ship filled with 400 students.
But the one special thing I remember the most is the feeling it gave me to be so far from home and seeing so many wonderous things I had only seen in books. It gave me a taste for travel that to this day I am thankful for.
I remember as well, 2 guys both named "Ian" one with the last name "Corner" - tried to keep in touch for a bit but didn't work out. If anyone knows of Ian Corner from Haywards' Heath, Sussex England please let me know.
A super site - hope more people find it!

I was fortunate to go on the Uganda in 1975 what a great ship she was, we flew out from Gatwick to Athens on a Dan-Air 727, and joined the ship in Pireus, sailing across the Med,visiting places such as Rhodes, Alexandria, Cairo, Port Said, Haifa, Jerusalem, Nazareth, and on to Santorin, returning to Pireus. I'll never forget the Pyramids, riding on a camel and swimming in the Sea Of Galilee.
I remember a couple of very rough days sailing with queues at the sick bay for sea sick pills, having a tour of the ships bridge was very enjoyable. Our dormatory was below the waterline, and remember the chains to the bunks rattling all night with the vibration of the engines. Being woken at the crack of dawn with the words: Good Morning Students and the replies being less than polite from everyone!!!
Such great memories of reading everyone elses messages on this forum, has brought it all back.

Neil

I found this site tonight. I had an amazing school cruise in the Uganda around 1972 deprting from Liverpool (Esher County Grammar School). We went north to Reyjavick, Narvik & Andalsnes. Originally it was meant to be Russia but well in advance Russia decided it was no go.

Met some lovely young ladies but never kept in touch.

Just got hold of the book "Uganda the story of a very special ship" Its great and full of all the photographic memories that after 25 years you tend to forget...saddest of all though were the pics of her lying on her back in Thailand.

Fantastic book and even got it signed by one of the authors Marion Browning, well worht the price.

My Father was on the Uganda many times as Medical Officer, including the trip when she was seconded for the Falklands War. He went to the Falklands and stayed on to help with the wounded and bring them home to England. Anyone remember Dr. Bruce Cooper. He's just coming up to his 92nd birthday and I'm looking for things to help keep him interested in life! He loved his work on the Uganda - which included lots of dancing with the passengers no doubt! (the adult passengers that is!)

Sorry to see the ship in the Facklands war and later scraped, but she was old and tied.

I was fortunate to sail for two weeks on the Uganda in 1982, flew from Gatwick to Malta, where we boarded the ship,
From there we sailed to Alexandira-Rhodes-Izmir-Heraklion-Itea-Split and then home to Gatwick.
Have memories of the Pyramids and some now foggy photos of the trip.Remember the force 9 gale and everyone looking green and gasping for fresh air cos the toilets were smelling.
I also worked as a Sea Cadet in the Galley and have some pics of the catering crew and my dorm photo of cadets, Also on the trip was Jeff (Ginger hair) Jones from the same cadet unit in Wales, but he sadly got killed in a motor bike accident on his 17th birthday on the bike his parents bought him for his birthday.
Remember. Bob from Sailsbury, Jock from Cambletown, Fordie from Chesire(Runcorn)Carolyn Horne form Scotland, sarah and caroline from Jersey,Fiona from gatwick?
Happy to scan and send any pics if you only get in touch.

hope to hear from you soon.

Hello and welcome to the SS Uganda Forum.
I hope that if you have sailed on the Uganda
that you will use this forum to post your recollections of your time on board.
Maybe your looking for class mates or if you where aboard at the time of the Falklands war your memories would also be welcome.
Looking for friends /shipmates/forces friends or want to trade memorabilia relating to SS Uganda then post it here.

BTW I`m looking for the cardboard cutout model that used to be sold in the ships souvenir shop.

( I sailed on her in Feb 1979 with the Northampton School for Boys .)

I was 11 years old when I went on the SS Uganda. Sailed from Dundee to Flamm, Bergen, Copenhagen and Germany. I seem to remember there was the World Cup going on at the time as our song for the last night was 'We Couldn't Go to Argentina.' We had rehearsed this over and over but the night we were supposed to sing, the ship ran into a 10 force gale. We were all confined to our dormitories throwing up all over the place thinking the ship would sink! Anybody remember that cruise?

I remember the SS Uganda fondly. We sailed from Southampton in about 1st week of August 1975, calling at La Coruna (we visited General Franco's House); Gibraltar; Tangier (we were locked in a fancy goods warehouse by the local guide and his brother until someone bought something) - saw my 1st ever Snake Charmer; Malaga (bought ship-in-a-botle, saw bull-ring and drank wine for the 1st time in my life) and Vigo (there was civil war in Portugal at the time or we would have gone to Lisbon). I faked an illness as we crossed the Bay of Biscay - buffeted by thirty-foot waves washing the deck - with the doors open! (ahhh...peace in the hospital dorm...being a school cruise we were squashed in double bunk dorms next to the engine rooms...lovely for the asthma!) There were dorm wars between Lostock Hall Secondary and some Birmingham school in the next dorm knotted towels n toothpaste...I was glad to escape to hospital for some peace n quiet! Staff were great, library and shop full of Agatha Christie, the cinema played "Paper Tiger" - fave film - David Niven - hero, food school-average, facilities bare floorboards, but I will NEVER forget the nightly trip alone to the stern to watch the wake disappearing in the moonlight. Beautiful. And I fell in love for the first time in my life (came to nowt - I was 13 with NHS Specs!). So grateful to my Granfolks who scrimped forever to gather the £90 for the two week trip. I've never been on an ocean cruise since. Never had time / been able to afford it. Unforgettable memories though, thank you all who had a part in it. ;-D

Does anyone else remmebr travelling in about August 1975 as Beaufort House (i.e. sons and daughters of P & O staff)? Also, I went on the West Africa 1977 Christmas cruise for 6th formers. They attached me to a great group of girls, four pairs of best friends, led by the impressive Miss and Mrs Folland, who I believe had been part of the last ages of the Indian Raj! I'd love to get in touch. Have some great dormitory and dining room pictures! xxx

Whilst I was a pupil at Dyffryn Comprehensive school in Port Talbot during the early to mid seventies I was lucky enough to have two "educational" trips on the Uganda.

As the passing of time has made it difficult for me to pin down the exact dates and itineries I was wondering if anyone could help to jog my memory.

As far as I can remember the schedule of the trips was firstly, Swansea, Lisbon, Casablanca, Canary Islands and Gibraltar, which I believe was in 1973.

The second trip, which I think was in 1974 (or possibly 1975), started with a flight to Dubrovnik and then, not necessarily in this order, on to Athens, Izmir, Beirut, (supposed to go to Cyprus but didn't and can't remember why, possibly the Turkish invasion of northern Cyprus?) then Santorini and finishing at Malta for a flight back to the UK.

I have fond memories of the time I spent and the people I met on the Uganda, and the trips were truly educational, although not necessarily in the way they were intended to be!

It was a fantastic experience for a teenager to have and if anyone out there can help me pin down the dates involved I would be grateful.

The cruise i went on was and Easter cruise We flew to Dubrovnik, then sailed
to greece,(Itea) turkey,(Izmir) haifa Israel and then to malta (valletta)to fly home.
It was amazing, I was hospitalized for sea sickness, the smell of the food was awfull, it didnt taste so bad as it smelt. The places we visited were amazing.the sunsets even better. we bought some ouzo and guess what, we got drunk. oops. First time we had cornetto, it wasnt in england at that time.
After lights out a friend and i managed to do a tour of the
ship without getting caught.(dared to!!)
We drove through tel-aviv and went to visit all the places in the bible i.e. river Jordan, sea of Gaililee and the road to damascus etc., We learnt the words of hava nagila hava and to this day i amaze my kids lol. i bought some turkish delight as presents but they never arrived home with me.hungry, and alabaster egg... not sure of their purpose. Worry beads and a silver ring from Malta.
we were suppose to have lessons, but im sure we treated it as our holiday and not an educational trip. I made some great friends from other schools, i just wished i could remember their names......and i fell in love (puppy love)
think his name was warren.Just got a few pics left of a distant memory and a gold badge. Having had all my pressents including a ocotopus and things pinched when we had to leave our luggage. Thnx for this site, memories are precious . No one can take them from you, (only old age lol)

Re this review. <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://ashleyrunt.digitalartsuk.com/ugandalog.htm">http://ashleyrunt.digitalartsuk.com/ugandalog.htm</a>

That was the very same cruise I was on. Brought back a few memories. I was 11 but I was in the private passenger part at the front. Very nice it was too.. not many kids up there though.

A ferw things to add to that little review.. One of the schoolkids missed the ship in Venice and had to be flown to Dubrovnik to be reunited with the ship – nobody missed the sail time after that.

In Dubrovnik we got bored of the tour so we cut out and headed back to the ship – unfortunately the way back meant walking through the dockyards and being chased by a couple of very unfriendly guard dogs. We got away by heading up a covered bridge that had a door that we could shut behind us.

The storm seemed to go on for ever.. sitting in the lounge you could look out one side and see all sky whilst the other side showed nothing but sea – it was rolling that much.

Egypt – did the pyramid tour – we bribed the guards on the sphinx to let us stand on its leg and have our picture taken.. a whole pound that cost..(in the days when the pound was the preferred currency over the dollar). And I do remember the Gully gully man… being 11 and sitting in the front row meant that I was picked on as a target for his show…

Turkey – we skipped the main tour and headed into izmir – open markets and everything. Got back to the ship and had a late lunch- clearly the staff wanted to do something they were familiar with – so they were cooking Vindaloo. Being adventurous I went for it.. and after about 3 mouthfuls I had to send it back and order a burger instead…

Athens – I remember all the restaurant owners standing in the street trying to lure us in to eat at their place…we went into one and I had some very dodgy shrimp. Within 20 minutes I was getting very intimate with a toilet that was straight out of the middle ages…
Bloody cold there as well – ended up walking around the Parthenon in a parka!

Highlight of each day – listening to the BBC world service on the tannoy as they announced the weather for England – and the area we lived (Essex) was getting hammered with snow!! Our town was cut off for 3 days – and there I was lying by the pool on the way into Alexandria getting a tan….shame. (loved the way all the locals came out in boats and were haggling with the staff through the portholes).

Anyway I was talking to my mother about the Uganda and she kept some of the menus.. as she’s moving house some she is sending them to me so I’ll scan them and get them online.. should be interesting.

I have just recently purchased tickets to see the Tutankhamun exhibition (on at millenium dome) and it brought back such memories of the educational cruise I went on way back in December 1979 on board the dear old SS Uganda - what memories. I was with Plumstead Manor School, we flew from Gatwick (my first time on a plane!) to Malta, itinery was Eygpt - pyramids, sphinx, very long and very cold journey through desert in middle of night, i can remember being freezing!! Museum I think in Cairo, saw a small section of the treasures there. We did Bethlehem, it was a lovely warm day, will never forget. The Dead Sea. Rhodes, Santorini, Sicilly, and finally docked in Naples, included visit to Pompeii. Can remember loads of laughter on board, especially the deck games and discos. Always played "we are sailing". I celebrated my 15th birthday on the way to Alexandria. Food was dreadful but who cared? Our dorm was called Admundsen I think, it was in the bowels of the ship with slanted walls (obviously) very dark and very cramped but a real giggle. I remember leaving Port of Alexandria in very rough sea and all my friends being sick over board which I found hilarious as it did not affect me at all. Our school hooked up with a crowd from a Welsh school, they were so friendly and funny, but sadly can't remember any names. It was this wonderful cruise that sparked a life long interest in me in travel, museums, ancient history - thank you S S Uganda!

Nevasa was the ship I sailed on in May 1966. We sailed from Liverpool and visited Madeira,Casablanca,Gibraltar and Lisbon. I was in Raleigh Dormitory, or was that the name of the classroom? I think the cruise cost £37 and we were allowed to take £5 pocket money! Wow! It began in me a love of cruising though.Cruise ships are a lot more luxurious today! It is just wonderful to wake up in a new destination every day without having to pack and unpack each time!

We sailed just before Christmas of 1968 and this was my first cruise. I was 14 and all of my best friends were on the cruise, too. I think there were 13 of us in our dormitory. I belive it was Glenn. Reading this forum, it seems like every cruise had rough seas. All but two in our dorm got sick. They got sick everywhere, it was awful. Ramona and I went on deck to get some fresh air. We had dances every night. The food was certainly not up to todays standards, but still made for great memories. We Sailed from Tripoli, Libya and went to Naples, Barcelona, Palma, Mallorca ; Ajaccio, and Malta. Since it was during the Christmas break, we did not have any classes. It was an amazing time.

I have recently realised that it's 30 years ago this week that I was bobbing about on the SS Uganda ! We picked her up in Venice and then went off to Corfu, Izmir and Athens.

The whole cruise cost GBP 67.00 and we were allowed just GBP 10 each spending money for the entire eleven days - no wonder all of us kids were shoplifting so much !!!

I am glad I kept my log book and dormitory badge. They are about the only material things that I still have to remind me of that innocent time (well, innocent bar a little shoplifting!)

Glad to see this site exists and that so many people have happy memories of their "educational" cruise :o)

Does anybody have lists of names, or know where I can find them, of the officers who were on Uganda in 1977? This mainly refers to the educational cruise out of Malta in January 1977.

I must have sailed out of Greenock (near Glasgow) on the Uganda around 1975, or so. Went to Corunna, Cadiz, Brest and some other places (where we must have gotten even more drunk than in in the ennumerated list!)The trip was in my 2nd year of Greenock Academy.

I can't recall much on board other than playing ping-pong. That, and the Disco where i met up with Jennifer from The Cults in Aberdeen. When we disembarked back in Scotland, she gave me a note with the message title inscribed on it. Good times!

I went on the uganda in January 75, with a gang from Ruffwood school in Kirkby. Flew Dan-air comet from Gatwick to Tangiers, then sailed to Malta and then Athens. Flew back to Gatwick from Athens on British Airtours 707. Cant remember much, but I do remember what a culture shock Morocco was, god I was terrifed there!

Great site and content - I never sailed aboard Uganda but did have three happy cruises aboard Nevasa - you tend to forget the Force 10 gales in Biscay as the years go on!

Anyway I am putting together a Nevasa Reunited 'type' site and would love to hear from anyone who sailed aboard Nevasa - for now you can contact me at spring.ball@ntlworld.com hopefully the site will be up and running shortly.

Best wishes to you all. Lin

I went on this cruise with King James 1 School, Bishop Auckland. I was 13 at the time. I remember there were lots of Canadians from a place called Medicine Hat which struck me as a strange name! They had it on the backs of their jackets. We flew to Athens and visited Olympia (Katakolon), Naples and Istanbul. At Olympia we ran a race on the site of the ancient Greek Olympic track, which was a big thrill. Pompei was interesting but in Istanbul the local male poplulation was quiter taken by our short skirts and some girls had their behinds pinched crossing the Bosphorus! I recall too that a Turkish Airline came down in France with great loss of life around the time we were about to fly home and we were very anxious.

Fortunate to have done 2 trips on the SS Uganda with Wellsway School Keynsham Somerset. First in '69 to the Baltic from Tilbury and visiting Copenhagen, Visby, Leningrad (optional trip to Moscow), Oslo and back to Southampton. In '70 we did the Mediterranean flying Dan-Air from Gatwick to Venice and then on to Corfu, Athens, Izmir, Tunis and Rijeka. We were meant to visit Tripoli in Libya but as there was a cholera epidemic we were diverted to Tunis instead. Great memories apart from the force 9's I experienced on both trips. God could that ship roll.

I remember bits and pieces of life aboard the SS Uganda as a Canadian high school student from Ashbury College (Ottawa). Sailed from Yugoslavia to Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Greece.

Mostly remember the other English speaking students trying to pass themselves off as Canadians in the Middle East ... plus a beautiful memory of Beirut between civil wars.

Since it's topical.... I was reading the BBC webiste on the Falklands 25 years on, and Wikipedia referred to Uganda docking in Naples to discharge it's cargo of children all singing Rule Britannia. I was one of those with Birkdale School, Sheffield.

The cruise left Venice, and then went to Sparta. From there it was supposed to go to Rhodes, Egypt and Israel (I think), but it all got rearranged and we went to Egypt before she turned around and we were told the cruise was being cut short.

Main memories:

The accommodation - awful. Worse than awful. We were in the bowels of the ship, with no windows. I remember being slightly affronted when I read that the accommodation was being upgraded to make it fit for troops to live in!

Cheesy films - lots of Beatles films and Tom and Jerry

Being requisitioned - arriving in Naples was a lot of fun! I was only 11 and we really didn't have a clue what was going on!

Coming home - looking back it must have been a logistocal nightmare. We got flown back to the UK but had to stay about 6 to a room in a hotel before being taken back to Sheffield. My parents told me later that no-one could or would tell them what was going on

Happy memories - I spent time with friends seeing lots of great things, and having a good laugh. I wonder these days whether something equivalent to these educational cruises still exists, but I doubt it.

All in all, it was a great experience, and we all got 50% refunds!

I sailed on the Uganda in September 1981 or 1982 with what seemed like then half the kids from Liverpool. I was 12 years old and can remember the ship very well - the accommodation - I use the term lightly - was terrible. We were stuck in the deepest depths of the ship with uncomfortable bunks hanging from the wall on large chains. Conditions were most uncomfortable - hot amd smelly and the food inedible. However, I did manage to sneak into one of the bars in an area off limits to the children and couldn't believe the opulence - it was like the last days of the Raj. Anyway loved the sailing more than the places we visited. I was amazed to hear of the typhoon incident I always thought she was broken up after the Falklands.

I would like to hear from anyone who was on this ship the same time as me,It was 1980 when i spent over two weeks on board this incredible boat.
We had a host of schools onboard this vessel,my school was St Nicholas in Laindon Essex,we also had Chalvedon School from Essex on board with one of my best mates Matthhew Harris making it one the most memorable trips of a lifetime.
What stands out was that the original cruise included a visit to moscow and leningrad, however due to the olympic games being held in Russia that year we was given a alternative visit to berlin, which included a trip to the east through check-point charlie, which was just incredible.we also visited visby, copenhagen, stockholm, helsinki,on a truly remarkable 2 weeks,My parents met me at the port of copenhagen, where i spent a few hours with them on there own holiday, before returning to the class where we was entertained by a night at Tivoli Gardens.
Anyone remember Mrs Collop who was head of our party, and Mr Paul.

I remember wonderful memories during our cruise on the SS Uganda. I travelled with my sister and mother and we were treated like royalty. I was fairly young but I remember many details about the ship. We sailed from Mombasa to Cape Town and it took us roughly a week to reach our destination. I have never forgotten my child-hood cruise holiday and the wonderful memories have coaxed me to take other cruises. God bless all who travelled on the beautiful SS Uganda.

I sailed on the Uganda in June 1975 - the Baltic cruise to Visby, Helsinki, Leningrad and Copenhagen. We sailed from Dundee (if my memory serves me well) and the roughest crossing was of the Pentland Firth. Loads were calling for 'Hughie and Ralph' that night. Disappointingly we were in the bowels of the ship and only saw dayight when we went up on deck. I do remember the daredevil game of jumping through the watertight doors as they began to close. Our dorms were a bit sparton and millitary like and our teachers were constately on the prowel to prevent any Hanky Panky going on. I met a young lad called Dave from Dundee at the evening disco, and was later caught kissing him in a classroom - strictly forbidden in the evenings- and of being told by my teacher that my life was practicaly over and my reputation ruined beyond saving. I have a feeling Dave dumped me after that. I think our first port of call was Visby and our teacher insisted we visited the Apothacary's shop, clearly a high point in his itinerary. We were more interested in the hunky blond chaps lying on the grass sunbathing. I feel we were just dumped there and made the best of it for our selves and similarly in every other port bar Leningrad. Memories of Copenhagen consist of almost being killed by a tram - forgetting or not being told the traffic came from your LEFT!! of a large department store we were asked to leave for being unaccompanied and Tivoli gardens at night where we screamed so much on the roller coaster we could hardly speak the next day. Helsikni is a blurr apart from the Sibelius Monument - the Silvery tubes you could walk under and the Olympic stadium. Leningrad is a different matter. This was the first time I'd seen a gun. Soldiers checked our bus before we left the dockside and as he walked down the bus aisle I could have touched it. Our tour bus was quite tired and well used. Even at 12 I could see this was not an affluent city. It was quite shabby in parts and although the buildings were painted it was a colourless city. Some russians tried to buy my Levis from me whilst were we taking photo's of Peter the Great on Horseback. (Sadly I'd chopped his head off - photographically speaking). I was taken aback by the ostentation of the Winter Palace Gardens and all of the Gold coloured statues. I recall a water feature where you got wet when you were not looking. Our teachers insisted we did not purchase any ice-cream fom the vendors in the gardens because hygiene reasons. Still we did it any way and survived. Not forgetting the shopping experience - I cannot remember if this was close to the ship but all it had for sale was Russian stacking dolls.
Yesterday I found my Muster station badge - Van Diemen and the SS Uganda badge. From the loft my husband produced the Helsinki Tourist map (all in finnish strangely),a plan of the Bridge of the Uganda (the educational bit) and a tourist brochure of Moscow. We were supposed to go there but for some reason ended up in Leningrad. Sadly my photo's are long gone (including a school group one taken onboad) my Ships Diary and the small green identification card we had for the Soviet Union. Still HAPPY HAPPY MEMORIES.

I remember a school cruise Nov 71. The weather was excellent and my school, Hazelwick, Crawley, had a group of about 20. We flew to Venice and visited Cyprus, Athens and Kos, going through the Corinth Canal. All I remember clearly were the tin trays for food and the bunks. Compared to present cruise ships she was tiny. My Dad said she was used as a troop transporter when he was doing national service.

1978 -
EMB Southampton, Valencia, Palermo,Khios (Cancelled due to bad weather), Istanbul, Athens (Stop over due to flight cancellation)Flight to LHR.

What I do remember :-

"Jilted John", "War of the worlds" and "Sandy" on the Juke box in the common room (If I EVER hear "Hopelessly devoted to you it will be too soon!).

People getting seasick over the Biscay especially Deborah Pink (boy did I feel sorry for you!) lucky I was used to ships, having a Captain as a Father and all, otherwise I might have joined you on the aftdeck.

Trying to figure out how to get through the watertight doors without raising the alarm on the bridge, so we could get to the girls dorms. let me just say it helps to have a Captain as a father (wink wink nudge nudge!)

A wierd memory comes back of some guys singinig "Plasic elephant and me" (God knows why my feeble brain has catalogued that!) but it was from the rag show.

Somwhere on a greek island one of the girls from Dover Grammer got really wrecked on Ouzo, I remember feeding her as much bread as I could to try to sober her up before returning to the ship.

I played the Trumpet for the Student rag show and on the aft deck (ahem!) wearing a silver suit (Which was for my stage show. I still havn't lived down the wolf whistles but hey! it made me popular with the girls! :) ).

The rotton sods of a crew who played "I'm leaving on a jet plane" upon disembarkation and sent all the girls into a frenzy of sobbing"

What I don't remember :-

What was wrong with the food? Seemed ok to me!

If your cabin floor got wet then who was silly enough to leave the porthole open? Our cabin was at the waterline. I remember checking the porthole size for regulation shoulder width, well you never know.

Greetings to:-

Nichola Stubbings of Istead rise, (I still think of you I hope you persued your microbiology career)

Old school friends Tom Nealy, Nicholas Boston, Andrew Stuart? Deborah Pink (Thank you for your support!), Deborah Kaye.

Finally to the girl I met from Dover Girls grammar School whom I fell in hopelessly love with, and tried to spark up a relationship after the cruise. But you know, shipboard romances never last :(

Anyone else who was on that cruise or remember "The boy with the silver trumpet", it would be a great to see how you got on in life.

I still have a T-shirt from the Uganda covered in signatures, girls phone numbers and the odd "kick me" written on it somwhere :)

Tempus fugit!

I went on Uganda I think in Easter 1979 .
It seems like a lifetime ago but I can still remember it quite well .It was abseloutely fantastic ,we had a brilliant time.
We went to Pompeii, Delphi ,Cyprus,Ephasus, Israel,Kos and Athens.
I have been reading the messages and I had forgotten how shockingly bad the food was.Concrete chocolate cake with horrible butter cream and the only English the stewards knew was Bobby Charlton.
We had a load of Canadians in our dorm who were a real good laugh.
One of them ,Bill Ramsey, tracked me down about ten years ago but I lost his phone number .
Get in touch again if you read this .
I remember being really proud of her when she went to the Falklands and more than a little sad when I heard she had been scrapped.
It was a real, life experience, something that you will never ever forget.
Something I do remember is my Mum and Dad scrimping and saving to pay for it and me having to earn all my spends
It was a real privelage to go

Looking back I find it hard to believe I was able to go on such am amzing trip. I was with a group from Dumfries Academy on a cruise from Venice to Southampton.
We flew in a Dan-Air plane (ex Brtish Eagle 707) to Venice.
Sailed from there to Dubrovnik (wow, communists, and some of the lads got really drunk on the cherry brandy, stomachs pumped in ship's hospital, it was a bit scary walking on the top of the old city walls), Piraeus (Athens, wow again), Tripoli (hard to believe, wow Leptis Magna), Lisbon (nice pavements).
I think the food was OK, I just remember the all-in-one stainless steel trays. The whole ship smelt of disinfectant.
I still have a picture somewhere taken during the emergency drill. I think it was taken by a photographer on the ship.
I threw up on the Bay of Biscay.
It was a priviledge to be allowed to go on a trip like that.

Hi,
Can anybody help me, I'm trying to recall the date I went on a school cruise?

The year was either 1980 or 1981. We flew from Cardiff to Split and then sailed to Greece (Athens, Rhodes, Kos), Egypt, Cyprus and Turkey (not necessarily in that order!).

I do remember having a great time but also remember being laid up in the hospital quarters, missing Egypt, as I had terrible sea-sickness! I can relate to those who talk about the food - it was sometimes awful - and the trays it was served on were not too appealing.

The lessons were ok, though I recall managing to skive off some of them by locking myself in the loos. Oh, the things we would do to get out of classes!

I have a couple of photos that I am happy to share with anyone who is interested.

Please help - this one is driving me mad!!

Thanks,
Louise

I have added a retrospective diary of my experiences on my Uganda cruise, based on memories and the few documents and photos I have, but I hop this is as accurate an account as I could make it 25 years later.

I served on the Uganda as Third Radio Officer for her last voyage to East Africa. I was responsible for getting the ship's newspaper printed overnight so the First Class passengers had the latest news at their breakfast tables. I received the news in morse code typing it directly onto Gastetner (?) copying paper ready for instant printing.

We had a great send-off from Mombasa but had other great parties upon leaving Durban, Beira, Mozambique (as it was then), Dar-es-Salaam and up to Mombasa. Other ports of call after transiting the Suez Canal homeward bound were Naples and Barcelona.

I remember we had a Goanese (Portuguese India) crew and that was the first time I had heard of curry, let alone tasted it. I live in Arizona now and often dream of having a decent curry again.

Upon disembarking in London Docks, we all thought it was a disgrace that she was being converted to a school cruise ship. However, now I have read the great experiences the kids had and the memories they are sharing with their kids now, I am even prouder of the old girl!

My experiance of the Uganda revolves around it's use as a hospital ship during the Falklands conflict. It was comfortable enough, considering I had spent some time previous to my residence accomodated in bashas and slit trenches.

It was warm and dry and, although in considerable pain, I was going home.

I put my combats in for laundry and they disappeared. got home dressed as a sailor.

Every night on the cruise, if I remember, the last song was always Rod Stewart's Sailing, then used as a theme song in the popular BBC documentary fly on the wall docu-soap about life on board the Ark Royal. - It was always the last chance to smooch my young lady friend, before we had to go back to our school party- dormitaries, though one night I found myself hugged through it by her lady teacher, who was rather too hot to handle for a 15 year old kid like me, and my girl ran off sulking in jealosy about that, which may have been the teacher's attention. I find that song has a special resonance for me ever since.

I recall also the puritanical pensioner who ruined the mood and moment of my first true kiss by hitting me with his walking stick and telling me and Louise (the girl, not the teacher) off for being so disgusting at such an age - It was just a kiss....!!!

I was on the SS Uganda for a Baltic cruise with my school, Moston Brook (Manchester, England) in 1977 - My rather bullying classmates kept trying to fix me up on dates but I found my first girlfriend by myself, or rather, she found me much to everyone's surprise, including my own, though the relationship was ended soon after the cruise, as we were too far apart - she lived in Edinburgh at the time. I would like to hear from Louis Pegauson again (she may well have married since then of course, in which case that is her maiden name, 0. I was disheartened in the Falklands War years when propaganda reports were leaked that falsely claimedthatthe ship had been sunk by the Argentinians, and even more saddened later when the ship was decommissioned. She took meon my first trip abroad, and to my first experience of romantic love. She is very special to my memories. Good to see sites like this keep her memory alive. Anybody out there on the cruise (to Germany (close to border with East), Gydansk, Helsinki and Copenhagen.

I was with Hamilton Grammer and I think Uddingston were there as well.

Funniest memory was one of the younger lads copeously vomiting into a drinking fountain on-board following the stop in Germany. Strong stuff that German beer!!

what a great site,I sailed to the Falklands in 1982 the lasting memory was of a wave hitting the ship at the level of the dance hall and looking throught the oposite window at raging sea. scary times. Its good though that the messages are mainly from times of peace as really however dramatic the Falklands Conflict was the Uganda should be remembered for all the joy it gave to thousands of children.

Sailed from Leghorn, after arriving by plane from Gatwick, via Canada on DC8. Three week cruise, through the straits off Sicily(rough water), plenty of us were sick. Onto to Gibraltor, Malta, Crete, Athens, Turkey, Lisbon, Floernce & Pisa.(not in correct order) Same memories as others, awful food, couldn't wait till we docked to eat at the closest restaurant. A number of others from Britain, Rosalind(?) and a few from America. Was able to talk my parents into allowing me to go to the bar on ship, that cider was strong ! Remember the one class on board, picture of Russian ship with women crew members chained to their stations below deck. From then on we all sat out classes in the lounge. Great experience, anyone on same cruise ?

I look forward to hearing from someone soon

Last night me a my best school pal got to reminiscing about the uganda and were both surprised to find out neither of us had gone onto the net to see what was around! So here we are! I was on the Baltic 1979 and the "med" (not quite!) in 81. How lucky was I?!!
It was great though we were a bit like cargo I suppose. I recall a very good quip from a classmate replying to a snooty passenger as follows as we strayed out of bounds!

Passeneger " you're not supposed to be here- this is for paying passengers"
Sandra(!) "what do you think we are....cargo!"

I actually was a very sad schoolboy and wrote a daily diary which I actually still have. Amongst the "interesting items it says what the music was we were wakened with each morning. Imagine my horror as a 15 year old waking up on the first morning to "Yes Sir I can boogie! by Baccarra!!
Good times indeed. Has the ship been scrapped completely and dismantled. I'd love to get on it again.
Anyway. Just my thoughts (Hi mel!)

This has brought back a lot of memories (some repressed....) I was on the Uganda in (I think) 81, we left from Venice & went to Haifa (with a tour to Jerusalem & Bethlehem), Dubrovnik, Rhodes, Bodrum, Limassol & Malta - probably not in that order. I was there as a Sea Cadet, it had cost my parents STG90 for the trip. The Sea Cadets didn't do any classes on the ship like the school tours had to, instead we were split into teams and allocated a lifeboat that we had to 'refurbish'. I was in charge of the Captains lifeboat (#2 on the port side from memory), and there was a competition for who did the best job. We had the smallest lifeboat, so we repainted the whole thing inside with bright orange paint from the Bosun & won the competition. I can't remember the prize. I do remember drinking $1 a bottle wine from a place on the waterfront at Bodrum, and falling flat on my face while waiting for the liberty boat to come & pick us up. I also remember magaing to buy a carton of John Player Special cigarettes from the Duty free at Heathrow, and then having to hide them for the whole trip as I was too young to smoke! the Sea Cadet officer that took us had done a lot of trips, his name was possibly Dave ? Was great fun, I don't think I have even thought of it for 20 years though...

Hi. I found the book Uganda...The story of a very special ship in my local library today. (June 2005) It brought back wonderful memories of a special trip with school friends. I'll have to work out what year it actually was...probably August/September 1971(ish) with a number of school parties from Ulster and rest of UK.

This site is great,Just stumbled across this page and thought i would say hello,I remember the SS Uganda pretty well after my trip to Stavanger,Aarhus/Arhus and Amsterdam i think in 1974.I have read a few messages in your site i too have very fond memories of SS Uganda,i recall the first morning at sea woken by some sicko knocking out a tune just like that mad bird on hidee-bloody-hi!!and amazed that i couldnt stand straight as the ship ploughed through the cold North sea,and breakfast! oh joy watered down orange juice and something else on a plate, the food trays being whipped away by the indian kitchen staff, the waves spraying up and soaking you as you watched the mops and deck quoits sail by,there was another reason as not to lean on the railings for too long, and that was someone on the next deck up was bound to spit on you,it was nearly compulsary!!! 10 years old and away from home for the first time can be a bit scary but is nothing when i discovered that our dorm was WELL below the water line and i regularly skipped quickly past the thick water tight doors just in case they decided to suddenly shut!!Well toast is nearly ready and i could go on for hours but i must go now glad i found this place seeing a picture of the ship does give me good memories, pity the old girl is gone but i suppose better she was lost at sea than torn apart in some scrap yard.Oh and one final note does anyone remember how all the drinking fountain were choked with buns and everywhere stank of sick, oh to be 10 again....

Wow. Years of memories just came flooding back to me in a heartbeat. I was one of approx 30 Canadian kids who took part in the Xmas 77 cruise from Ceuta down to Banjul with stops along the route. I was devastated to find out the the old girl had been payed off and sold for scrap. The "Uganda" truly was an educational experience for me, and to quote another "we left as kids and came back men". I would love to hear from anyone else who was on that cruise. Funny... I don't remember the food as being that bad. When someone else mentioned the metal meal trays I had to laugh...I remember that the galley smelled heavily of bunker fuel and the hatches between the dorms were well guarded but you could always find a way. Fantastic site... please keep up the great work. Cheers

Easter 71...as the saying goes we went out boys and came back men! Flew Dan Dare Comet 4C Gatwick to Venice. Sailed to Piraeus, Malta, Tangiers and Lisbon. Home to Southampton through the obligatory Bay of Biscay Force 10. Great sport sliding across the dining hall on plastic chairs, especially on the hot bovril that the poor catering staff spilt from the urn they had carefully brought up from the kitchen. The piano in the lecture hall broke loose from its moorings, smashing all the seats and resulting in no more lessons (shame).
Getting watches nicked on Tangiers beach, taunting 'Chopper' Harris, the Ships Master, being able to use up our old pre-decimal currency on Malta (every bus trip 6d) and losing our 13 year old hearts (but nothing else sadly)to a group of 16 year old Canadian Ladies. Such is the stuff of an educational cruise!

Crikey what a lot to remember. I've just visited The Smugglers Cottage at Tolverne (near the King Harry Ferry) where the Uganda was moored prior to her last voyage. The Smugglers has devoted a whole room to photos and memorabilia and is well worth a visit if you are in Cornwall.

The trouble is what to say about such a grand ship. For me, the highlight of my cruise was standing on deck, almost alone, as the ship edged from the harbourside at Port Said. At the same time over the tannoys was played Rule Brittania (or similar !!). Still brings a lump to my throat

In conversation about a school trip I took in the '70's I mentioned the SS Uganda to a friend. Curiosity took hold and I found this website and lo and behold, fellow travellers!! What an honour. We took a Spring trip from Ottawa with a group from Elmwood School for girls, flying Dan Air to Venice where we boarded. Memories include Matron chasing us down trying to get us to lights out (herding cats), bilges overflowing (what a sight), volcanic eruptions on a really stormy night, a Turkish nightclub where the guitarist sent a note asking me or one of my table to marry him (interesting as a teenager)...
I had heard the ship sank in the Falklands War. Am I correct in this assumption?
I have not taken another 'cruise ship' though I have continued to travel. Why spoil the fun?
Cheers

I, along with some colleagues in the SS Uganda Trust, co-authored a book about the SS Uganda. 400+ pages, 400+ photos, covers the life of the ship from launch in 1952 to her end on a beach in 1986. Price £27 inc. p&p by cheque payable to the SS Uganda Trust at "Tarven, Corfe Lodge Road, Broadstone, Dorset, BH18 9NF". The Trust is a registered charity number 1020247. Any profits towards the objects of the Trust.

I was fortunate to have cruised three times onboard the SS Nevasa whilst at Pinner Grammar School. Unfortunately this fondly remembered ship did not have such a dramatic life as the Uganda, so unlikely to write a book about her, but would love to hear from anybody with memories.

I spent most of the time as staff cadet which meant being involved in the entertainment of the students organising games, discos etc. We visited the Baltic, the Azores, and the Canaries. We also under took two adult cruises one for the Scottish National Trust and another from Dublin for some religious organisation.I also remember the Staff Captain giving a lecture to the crew in Hindi about the men landing on the moon at the time. I was an 18 and 19 year old passenger on the April 82 cruise during which she was requisitioned, my second trip. Some memories from that voyage are:

The trip to the Pyramids and the cancellation of the planned light show there so we could return to the ship for an early departure.

My leaving shortly before departure from Alexandria to head back to the port shops, noting that I was leaving the ship only half an hour or so to the planned last boarding time and checking carefully to be sure I'd be back in time.

Talk that it was very unusual and somewhat dangerous to be leaving the port at night.

Some vessel occasionally showing lights behind us as we transited to Naples at high speed. Anyone have any idea which vessel this was?

Bothering the poor purser, who was doing his inventory.

Watching the school parties disembark to TV coverage at Naples. A quick trip to the airport and home for everyone, no sightseeing in the city.

50% refund of the cost of the trip.

The food was good or excellent, on both the earlier school trip and this one.

A shipboard infatuation with a young woman who was herself interested (most wisely!:)) in someone other than me.

An exciting tip for a definitely unworldly youth.

Chesterfield School was booked on the December 1982 cruise, however there was the small matter of the ship being requisitioned for use in the Falklands. I remember reading every newspaper for information of the war, and hoping that the army would get a move on and defeat the Argies, just so that the Uganda would return in time for MY cruise. Its amazing how selfish you can be when you're 14 and leaving the country for the first time.

Memories include being very sea sick, terrible packed lunches and visiting "carpet land" with one of the teachers.

I had the SS Uganda experience sometime early eighties. Memory is a terrible thing to lose so I'm trying to rebuild a picture in my mind!

Does anyone out there remember exactly when this sequence of ports could have occured.

We flew into Split, then Corfu, then Alexandria, going to Cairo to see the Pyramids. Next we sailed to Haifa, and went to Bethlehem and Jersualem. From there we went to Santorini. We were meant to stop at Dubrovnik, but went straight to Venice instead.

It was an incredible voyage of discovery for a 12/13 year old, and would dearly like to know more information about when it was!

Thanks anyone who can help.

Colin

I was on SS Uganda in 1982 or 81 (I think!). I was about 16 or 17. We were supposed to pick the ship up in Venice (flew from Gatwick) but there was an Air Traffic Controllers strike in Venice, and we picked it up instead in Split, the then Jugoslavia. Disappointing to not see Venice. Was supposed to stop at Rhodes, but Force 12 Hurricane winds kept us at sea (too dangerous to dock, besides everyone was having so much fun puking everywhere!) so we never saw Rhodes either! Did see Ephesus, Alexandria, Pyramids, Athens. Great memories. My parents stumbled upon the ship when it was laid up on the River Fal after the war. They took lots of pictures and sent them to me. What a sad thing she looked. Sorry she is now probably part of several hundred Toyota's somewhere. I still haven't been to Venice or Rhodes!

Its almost thirty years since i was privaleged to sail on this wonderful ship.As an eleven year old it was such an exciting time for me visiting Savanger,Oslo, and Copenhagen.
I have shared my memories with my children and realise that they have missed out on a special time in maritime history. For any one who has sailed on the SS UGANDA or has any connection with her i strongly recommend the book advertised on this website and thank Marion Browning and all those responcible for getting this book into print.
If there is any one out there who was on the same trip as i
was it would be great to hear about your thoughts. SS UGANDA is a special ship and will long be remembered.

I was lucky enough to do two cruises on the Uganda in 1976 and 1977-Norway, Denmark and Germany the first time and Norway, Denmark and Holland the second. The first trip we were on the dormatories were full(imagine our sadness!!)and we ended up in en-suite cabins instead. We had a ball!
Next time it was back to slumming it in the dorms but since we were above the waterline we were grateful for small mercies-the boys in our group christened their below waterline quarters 'The black hole of Calcutta' I don't remember the food being terrible but the all-pervading smell of curry cooking(presumably for the crew) had me hanging my head over the side a couple of times! I remember that you weren't allowed to take food out of the dining room and having to resort to shoving my orange down my sock and making my escape like a prisoner from Colditz past the guard(it could have been a waiter on door duty!)
To anyone who has read it, does the Uganda book give details about how many thousands of deck quoits were lost or thrown overboard over the years that Uganda transported mischievious children?!! I clearly remember that being more popular sport than the official version of the game!
Also, can anyone explain to me why dormatory lockdowns and patrolling teachers were serious business at night and being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time was punishable in ways so horrible you could only imagine, yet our group of 12 -14 year olds were taken to the centre of Amsterdam and told 'you have two hours free, be back here by 3pm' then left to our own devices in the red light district! After all, there's only so much Delft pottery you can look at before the side streets beckon!
My favourite souvenir was the SS Uganda sailor doll in the traditional velvet suit with the sailor hat with SS.Uganda written on the band-sadly not available in the on-line shop.
I still have my Uganda log, posthumously written in after our return and under threat of corporal punishment if it wasn't done, so I guess we must have been having too much fun to bother with it while we were away!

I sailed aboard Uganda in March, 1975, one of 60+ Canadian teens aboard that voyage ~ great memories! Question ~ has a model of the Uganda ever been produced? A plastic kit (Airfix, are you listening?) @ 1:450 or 1:350 scale would be something worth developing. A English friend is shipping over the 'Nexus' plans (a future scratch-build project) ~ does anyone know of their quality / detail? Also, I once owned (since lost) a color-cutaway poster of Nevasa. I have the same for Uganda, and is wondering if anyone has 'Nevasa' they are willing to part with? Thanks ~ Robert James

I, like so many others, have fond memories of being onboard Uganda at the age of 10. I have a website with some memories, history and pics of Uganda and Nevassa. Have a look at the bottom 5 links on this page, I hope you like them <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.theforestreunited.co.uk/forest4/forestmemories.htm">http://www.theforestreunited.co.uk/forest4/forestmemories.htm</a> . If you have any amusing stories you could share with me, I would love to add them to my site.

Does anybody remember seeing/starring in the Children's Film Foundation comedy caper 'All At Sea', set on the Uganda?

Sailing from Tilbury meant a 100 mile bus journey to the docks, in fact more people were sick on the bus than on board ship ! We went to N. Germany, Leningrad (Moscow), Stockholm and Copenhagen. Food was odd but plenty of it, we were in Cousteau and the girls miles away through the labyrinth of corridors ...
Memories include :- Competitions for cleanest dorm (sad), Tivoli Gardens, whistling at the Russians and drinking their vodka fire water... Also smoking their fags which consisted of a hollow cardboard tube with a little manure(?) at the end. They threw loads of badges at the ship when we left and I still have a couple somewhere.
We were heading into Leningrad and I remember hundreds of condoms floating past. It was hot and sunny virtually every day. We saw the Varga in Stockholm. Happy days...

We went around the Med and my kids get sick of me saying "I've been there" all the time but it was such an experience for all of us that went we were so lucky.

It is a very worth while purchase, worth every penny (and I dont buy many books myself). It would also make a good present for someone too!

Must go now another chapter calling, I can hear the common room calling!

In 1980/81 I went on a school trip aboard Uganda. We visited Gibraltar, Sicily, Italy, Greece and Turkey. It was a fantastic experience even the hurricane force winds in the Bay of Biscay!
I remember the Leaning Tower, (you could still climb it then), lots of museums and churches, and the kind of belly laughs you only get as a child.
Uganda will never be forgotten by anyone who sailed on her.

Hello all,
I`ve just came across this by accident.
Found a company that makes cast metal models for war gaming
and they do a 1:3000th scale model of SS Uganda.
<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.navwar.freeserve.co.uk/3000modernships.htm">http://www.navwar.freeserve.co.uk/3000modernships.htm</a>
I think that works out at about 2 1/4 inches long.
It only costs £1:10 so I`ll send of for one and let you know.
Thank you to all who have written on the forum and I hope that we can reunite a few old shipmates.

Yours
Ashley

I first sailed on ss Uganda in 1970 on a cruise out of S'hampton to Vigo,Lisbon,Gibraltar &,I think,Casablanca. It was suchb a wonderful experience, I then helped to organise cruises for Gloucesteshire schools, until Mrs 'T' purloined Uganda for the Falklands war. Most of the cruises were fly- cruises out of Gatwick and places visited over the 13 cruises I took part in included Egypt Israel,Malta Naples,Sicily,Tunisia,Santorini,Crete,etc.etc.They were happy times and I was very glad to take my son with me on
one of them.I have read with sadness the story of the Uganda after the falklands War and I would be happy to hear from any fellow party-leaders about their memories at dorothyandlaurie"aol.com(Sorry about the" instead of the correct symbol. My Pc IS playing up this morning),

I sailed aboard the Uganda as a member of the military crew (after the Falklands war) and remember the bad food, dodgy server and water coming into the dorms through portholes. Also doing PT on the flight deck & getting covered in soot from the funnel - happy days
