My first flight (from the huts that later became Gatwick) on one of the last Dan Air comet 4c flights into Athens.
After a tour of Athens we boarded the SS Uganda - our home for the next 10 days. A rough crossing to Port of Alexandria with only a handful of cast iron stomachs not being turned inside out on the first night.
A wonderful coach trip up the Nile into Cairo to see Tutankhamun's treasures in dusty cabinets before they came to London and looked spectacular under halogen lighting. The Sphynx & Great Pyramid...what a day!
Next stop Grand Harbour Valeta and a ride on the little yellow Maltese busses to the old capital Medina.
My first calculator (a Sharp LED) was bought in Gibraltar and celebrated with a steak dinner in a Chinese restaurant as it was very cloudy and not worth going up The Rock. Then on to a green city in Portugal as the original stop was bypassed owing to some kind of rally. We ended up in Southampton and a bus back to the school gates. I was one happy lad who much appreciated my parents investment of some £400 in helping build life long memories and a travel bug in their first born son.
