That was one hell of a storm and we could not get into Alexandria because the draught there was not deep enough in the storm. The rudder was twisted about 15 degrees to one side, so as the Uganda had two propellers we used the engines at different speeds to compensate and keep her straight. The engineers were doubled up for each watch to control the engines. I was an Engineer Cadet on my first ever trip. What a fantastic place to start your working life. The food for the school kids always gets a mention. The food for the other passengers and the crew was fantastic. As Cadets we had to attend the school disco in the evenings. We were supposed to help get the kids dancing, but they didn't need our help.
