Subject: Baltic cruise 69/70

I went on a Baltic cruise in 69 or 70. We went to Kristiansand in Norway, Copenhagen then Leningrad with an optional trip to Moscow. On the return we stopped at Stockholm and I’m sure we came back through the Kiel canal after emptying the swimming pools. I went on the trip because they kept offering it to lower age groups until they had filled the quota for our school (Exmouth comprehensive). I was lucky that my parents could afford it and the optional trip to Moscow. I’m pretty sure I was in Gagarin dorm. Several girls were seasick going across the North Sea. I remember my first sight of oil rigs and being told there were still mines in the Skagerrak. For many years I thought that it was a wasted trip for a 13/14 year old but I now realise that after all this time I still have memories so it wasn’t wasted. I remember on the overnight train to Moscow waking up early and looking out the window. Mist was hanging in the pine forests and the occasional villages looked almost medieval. Then when we got to Moscow there were grand buildings with golden onion domes - such a contrast. Also in Red Square there was a little old woman sweeping the cobbles with a dustpan and brush. The heat waiting to go into Lenin’s mausoleum was unbearable. So many memories that prove you are never too young to experience things like those trips.
