 Sailed 49 years ago today on the Uganda calling at Lisbon,Santa Cruz (Tenerife),Casablanca and Gibraltar. We were due to go to Lanzarote but couldn’t dock because of a large swell in the harbour.

Tenerife was like an island paradise back then with few large hotels. Most of us bought cheap electrical equipment there as it was abundant.

I had my 15th birthday in Gibraltar and I had to kiss all the girls in our party. Most embarrassing as I was very shy then. All in all it was a great cruise and the weather was lovely.

We were all sent to our muster station for a test drill and the announcer said “this is where you stand when the ship is sinking” !. Very disconcerting for a young lad.

In 1974 my Dad,who was a teacher at my school, took a party on Uganda and flew to Dubrovnik and then sailed to Beirut and Santorini.

Lovely memories.
