I sailed on the Uganda in October 1979. I attended the Gleed Girls School in Spalding, Lincolnshire. We flew to Athens, then sailed to Izmir, Istanbul, Haifa, Santorini and finally Naples. My memories include sailing under the Galata Bridge in Istanbul. I didn't think we were going to get underneath it! Walking through the Grand Bazaar. Buying a bottle of 100% pure bottled water (out of a tap)from Jerusalem! Going for a donkey ride up a zig-zag path in Santorini. We got the anchor stuck there! The ship tipped to one side. In the end the anchor had to be cut free before we could continue with our cruise. I remember the dorms! About 10 pairs of bunks that hung from chains. Captain Clarke and Action Man. When we got back to school we had to write something about our cruise. I wrote a poem. Don't know why I remember this after all these years. I just do. It was an experience I will never, ever forget.

The ship SS Uganda is very long and wide.
It takes you 30 seconds to get from side to side.

The indians who served our food were very black and thin.
They dished the grub up every day with a wide and happy grin.

In the dorms not much room. Out of bounds from ten til noon.
The bunks were comfy but did squeak. Thank the lord we did not leak.

The weather in the Med was good. It did not rain throughout.
On Saturday the sea got rough and tossed us all about.

Now Captain Clark and Action man, their voices loud and clear.
Told us we were all quite safe, that we should have no fear.

We sailed to Naples our last port. The place to disembark.
Behing we left Uganda to fly home in the dark.
