Subject: SS Uganda? 1958
Message:

Dear Sirs
I don't know whether this is the correct place or not. I am trying to remember the name of a ship that I travelled on in July or August 1958. I was asked at school if I wished to join the Merchant Navy and as I plus 3 other pupils replied positive, my school's careers master had arranged a "familiarisation cruise" as he put it, on a BI steamship.
We sailed from Hull to Bremerhaven on to Antwerp where we took a trip to the World's Fair. We then ended up in London Docks for a few days and eventually we rejoined her to sail on to Liverpool. The ship, I was told at that time, had been to Australia recently as some of the cargo was tinned fruit. I found an Omega Seamaster watch in amongst the cargo when foraging for some cans for some of the crew!
The ship had a classroom on board. A training ship maybe?
All references to SS Uganda conflicts with this story. There appeared to be just us four boys from my school and the crew. Any ideas, please? Kind regards. B Swannie
