1978 -
EMB Southampton, Valencia, Palermo,Khios (Cancelled due to bad weather), Istanbul, Athens (Stop over due to flight cancellation)Flight to LHR.
What I do remember :-
"Jilted John", "War of the worlds" and "Sandy" on the Juke box in the common room (If I EVER hear "Hopelessly devoted to you it will be too soon!).
People getting seasick over the Biscay especially Deborah Pink (boy did I feel sorry for you!) lucky I was used to ships, having a Captain as a Father and all, otherwise I might have joined you on the aftdeck.
Trying to figure out how to get through the watertight doors without raising the alarm on the bridge, so we could get to the girls dorms. let me just say it helps to have a Captain as a father (wink wink nudge nudge!)
A wierd memory comes back of some guys singinig "Plasic elephant and me" (God knows why my feeble brain has catalogued that!) but it was from the rag show.
Somwhere on a greek island one of the girls from Dover Grammer got really wrecked on Ouzo, I remember feeding her as much bread as I could to try to sober her up before returning to the ship.
I played the Trumpet for the Student rag show and on the aft deck (ahem!) wearing a silver suit (Which was for my stage show. I still havn't lived down the wolf whistles but hey! it made me popular with the girls! :) ).
The rotton sods of a crew who played "I'm leaving on a jet plane" upon disembarkation and sent all the girls into a frenzy of sobbing"
What I don't remember :-
What was wrong with the food? Seemed ok to me!
If your cabin floor got wet then who was silly enough to leave the porthole open? Our cabin was at the waterline. I remember checking the porthole size for regulation shoulder width, well you never know.
Greetings to:-
Nichola Stubbings of Istead rise, (I still think of you I hope you persued your microbiology career)
Old school friends Tom Nealy, Nicholas Boston, Andrew Stuart? Deborah Pink (Thank you for your support!), Deborah Kaye.
Finally to the girl I met from Dover Girls grammar School whom I fell in hopelessly love with, and tried to spark up a relationship after the cruise. But you know, shipboard romances never last :(
Anyone else who was on that cruise or remember "The boy with the silver trumpet", it would be a great to see how you got on in life.
I still have a T-shirt from the Uganda covered in signatures, girls phone numbers and the odd "kick me" written on it somwhere :)
Tempus fugit!
Regards to any and all shipmates. Email me.
