My dad, Albert Henry Folsom, did his navy training at Sampson from 8/20/43 thru 10/16/43. He was initially sent to Sabine Pass on the Texas coast and assigned to a minesweeper. Then he went to Pittsburgh to be one of the handful of sailors tasked with sailing USS LST 56 down the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans for fitting out. LST-56 convoyed across the North Atlantic from Halifax to England (with a cargo of citrus fruit on board) and took part in D-Day at Omaha Beach. Dad subsequently contracted tuberculosis and ended up back at Sampson at the Naval Hospital there (from 4/02/46 to 10/27/46) until his discharge to a private sanatorium... where he met his future wife, my mom, who was also being treated. I'm posting in remembrance of my father, and to see if there are any connections out there! God Bless the Greatest Generation.
