Subject: Why America seems to be a complicated place...

You could never understand, Shelley, how outsiders can appear ambivalent about your country. It is impossible to see yourself as others do. To us the good ole US of A is the epitome of aspiration. It rewards us and lets us down, simultaneously. Therein lies the complication. Not whether America in itself is complicated, for I would not know that. But from my perspective it certainly proves complicated to understand it. Yu save displa toktok nau?

There is no space for me to write an essay on this matter, but take it from me, ya'all appear to be as complicated as hell. It's in appearances, tasol.

We love and hate ya, America.

We even talk like you and then we become bitter about you because you have infected our speech. That is a complication, isn't it?

We look to USA for inspiration because America inspires us, but we condemn you when that inspiration is not forthcoming.

In this regard, America can't win.

An what exactly is America? Oklahoma? Miami with its Cubans; Los Angeles with its Watts and Hollywood; Montana with its scenery and militia; Texas with its Dallas Cowboys and Galveston; New York with its taxis and Staten Island; Boston with its Kennedys and historic buildings and tea parties. I could go on. But you could never do that with my country, Australia. Because we don't infect you with our culture, which paradoxically is almost, I repeat, almost, American.

Dubya Bush ... is that goose not complicated? Is that idiot not complicating OUR world? What that moron does affects us all, and so we have a right and a duty to be involved with America. Not so you folk with us. What we do over here on the western fringe of the mighty Pacific Ocean has almost no impact upon you whatsoever. But then, if it weren't for America in 1942, Australia would have been in deep shit.

Finally, we take our hats off to America because basically it contains decent people who behave decently.
