Hey to all who are still reading this...

I am now an hourly interpreter at WOU. Fun stuff. :-) I'm really enjoying it. I'm not taking any classes this term...I'll finish up winter and spring term and then, God willing, graduate in June. :-) I'm also working on my thesis...if any of you know Interpreters that are experienced with Shakespeare, please feel MORE than free to give them my contact info if they're willing to share their experience with me. :-) Thanks!

Anyway, what's everyone else up to? And WHERE is everyone else, btw?

Well, hope to hear from ya'll. Peace. :-)

Hey, Just checking to see if anyone is out there.
How is the world of interpreting going for you?

I'm doing some part-time stuff in a (semi) local school district and having a good time.

Hope all is well for whoever reads this message.

Hi all,

Whooh! For those of you who took the RID written exam this weekend congratulations!!! And just remember that it's done, you can't do anything about it now, so just breathe, and let it go. :-) For those of you who didn't....good luck. ;-P Bleah. ;-)

Anyway, also, I am working on my thesis and I'd like anyone's help who's willing...for those of you who don't know or have forgotten, what I am doing is creating a kind of guide for new interpreters approaching Shakespeare for the first time to interpret it....my goal is to gather input from experienced interpreters, books, Deaf people, and my own experience to create a book-thing that will make interpreting shakespeare a little less intimidating and more plausible...so...what I need from you, if you're willing, is input on what you would want in a book like this...

If you were called upon to interpret a play of Shakespeare, what questions would fill your mind?
Thanks for your help. :-D TTFN

Rory! That is soooooo hilarious! And I can just see your face turn 40 shades of red... smile
Do you remember my story about a "great slice of bacon"? (If not, suffice it to say, "similar situation, same result"! Maximum embarrassment!! I laughed so hard I cried and I couldn't regain my composure until I actually left the room to catch my breath and dry the tears. Even when I went back in I had to fight to keep from snickering!)
Now you know for sure... YOU'RE AN INTERPRETER! smile
Peace and a BIG hug, Marla

Bye!!

I wanted to say a last hello before I take off for Georgia. I am sitting in the midst of my bags ready to go already. I don't know who has been updated and who has not so briefly I am going to Georgia to meet a friend and we are driving up to NY together where we will see Cirque Du Soliel before heading to camp. The rest of the summer I am living and working there. Then the two of us will decide where to spend the rest of the year - while applying to graduate school which I finally decided on a major; International Education Development as a certification and Literacy development as my Masters - I hope (It kinda combines the things I am interested in...) - Either living in Boston or Seattle or another fun interesting coffee shop city.

Whew!

I really loved my internship. I had a great mentor and several additional 'mentors.' My greatest learning experience had to do with dealing and negotiating with people - sometimes I felt like a chess player trying to manipulate people so that they got along better. I should go for a degree in group dynamics and team building - I now know I have the skills.

I miss people tons. I will leave this board up for the next year and see how frequently it gets used. If it starts to fall into disuse I'll have a pout and tear it down.

Take care all of you - visit my wherever I happen to be if you happen to be there too - I will try to keep you updated through messages.

Sincerely,
Rory

Hey all!
I can hardly believe that we are now in the final week or so of our internships!! Sometimes it seemed like I was never going to make it. But it's really happening.

I have had some great experiences over the past several months and have gained tremendously from my internship. I am planning to keep my hands up somehow next year, although how that will look is yet to be seen. I will be interpreting a Vacation Bible school in a few weeks which should be fun and there may be opportunities to interpret for some library programs this summer.

For the time being I am actually looking forward to some of the mundane things of life (like defrosting the freezer and cleaning the kids' rooms). WOohoo, aint life fun!!! We are still planning to have Johnathan here in August (yes, Danielle, it is what we have been hoping and praying for now for 11 years).

Take care in the final weeks. See you at graduation.

Wow, it sounds like everyone is doing so well...do you all feel you learned a lot from your internship? Skill development? I feel like I've greatly improved in the last two weeks. It was like I was trudging along through a swamp and all of a sudden hit dry land and took off running. My mentors have noticed it too and have commented which is a great encouragement.

This summer I will go to Hawaii for three weeks with Sara Ahn, then go to a wedding in WA, then home to LA and maybe drive my sister to Grad school in NY with my Dad....we'll see...I need some rest, too. Also, I will be spending a great deal of time working on my thesis (Int. Shakespeare)...which I have been putting off while I concentrated on my internship. Next fall I hope to be an hourly interpreter here at WOU and I might apply to the Salem/Kaiser School district...yeah, Kate, working off that stipend...Winter and Spring term I will finish my minor and the honor's program and hopefully graduate June 2004.

After I graduate I might look into interpreting in Central CA...but that's a ways off, we'll see what I know in a year or two....I hardly know what I'm doing this weekend. ;-)

Anyway, I'm taking the RID Written exam on June 7th up in Vancouver....Eek.
More studying needed.

I think that's all I have to say for right now...I need to head off to my Softball playoffs now. Wish me luck. ;-)

Love you guys. Hope to hear more from you soon. Remember to breathe. ;-)

Hello to everyone! Gosh, I miss you all so!
Well, the internship is almost over... whew! For me, it means I still have two years of school. Have to finish off the LACC's and my minor. I'm taking two classes this summer while working for 6 weeks at WOU. Then I have the rest of the summer off. I'll be doing some work around the house and maybe get to enjoy some time with my boys!
But every term for the next two years, I'll be chipping away at those classes. If all goes as scheduled I will graduate summer 2005, as I had hoped.
I wish more people would think to check in on this forum and let us know "what's up".
It's great to hear from those of you who have posted, but what about Rory, Julie, Jacs, Priscilla, Whitney, Tami, etc.?
I was glad to hear there may be a get-together in the works around graduation time. And I am looking forward to seeing those of you who will be here to walk. I'm really proud of all of you! :)
Well, gotta run... Peace and a BIG hug

Hi All. Good news! I've been offered a full-time staff position at Communique starting in August. I'm very exctied about that! I haven't decided whether to accept it or not, but it's nice to have options. I've thought also about going to San Diego, or RIT. So many pros and cons of each, so it's a tough decision. But stability and familiarity, and professionalism seem nice for my first year out in the field. So, we'll see what happens.

Summer...now that's still a big mystery. I've looked at programs at Gallaudet, RIT, ASLA etc, etc, etc. Can't decide what to do. I also asked Communique if I can continue my internship throughout the summer. They agreed to that, but again, I haven't decided yet.

So, that's my life...a bunch of decisions to be made! :) Exciting, but scary too.

How are the rest of you? Did anyone go to the RID Prep workshop? How was it? When are all of you planning on taking the written exam? Who's coming to graduation?

Miss ya!

Hey there. I'm not sure how many of you are still looking in on this page. I'm only now checking it after about 4 weeks. OUCH!
Well, I'm currently doing research for my future plans. I will fight fire again this summer. As far as my interpreting plans go that is still up in the air. I think that I could really get my foot in the door in Nevada. Sharon and I were discussing ideas. She really can motivate me. I've been thinking about the stipend and our requirements that need to be fulfilled. It looks like that will dictate my plans for the first couple years. I think it will be a good experience and help to prepare me for RID. I plan to take the state licensure test in Nevada on June 28th. It will be good practice for the RID and it is required to be an ed interpreter in Nevada. Nevada is really quite a step behind. I would really like to take things to a new level in Nevada. It will be slow but I can fore see amazing progress. Then again I'm not sure I want to end up in Nevada. Interpreting in Portland is to competitive without certification. Idaho is also a possibility. Really I'm willing to go anywhere as long as it will meet the requirements for the stipend contract.
Another avenue is grad school. Really I'm tired of school so I won't go this first year but I'm researching some schools in the east. Columbia University, Gallaudet, University of California, San Diego are just a few. They are mostly Deaf Ed programs, blah, but I think having the masters will aid in future sucesses. Deafdigest.com lists jobs around the US and most require a MA. I thought that was interesting.
It's great to hear that some of you have already got job offers and, well, jobs. Not to shabby. It gives me hope. Well, I can't wait till graduation. We can all swap stories and experiences. Until then I would love to hear your experiences so far. I'm waiting... :)

Hey there everyone,
I'm glad that the forum is being used. It's a great thing...but it's always so hard to remember the damn web address. I think that I've contacted Steph every time I want to go to the address. I just had an epiphany: put the address in my "favorites." Duh.
Okay, so how is everyone's internship? I'm almost done. RIT has two more weeks left of classes. I've really enjoyed everything and have gotten a lot of different experiences. It's amazing what variety there is in our field. For instance, I've seen everything from a strong oral perspective, to transliterating, to cochlear implants to strong ASL...these are the Deaf students perspectives, of course interpreters here try to match their communication preferences. It was interesting talking to one guy about his feeling for oralism. He grew up in an oral school and the first time that he was exposed to ASL, Sign Language was when there was a new student orientation at RIT. In fact, I've met several people that that has been their first exposure. As far as C.I., there are a ton of students here with them. In fact, at one of our CORE team meetings, we learned that because the technology was new about twenty years ago, we're getting an influx of students with C.I.'s now. This year there are 70 students, but by 2005, there should be 350. That means our profession is changing and we have to work with the Deaf students to figure out the best style of communication. Also, another interesting thing...there's this thing called C-Print. It's a real-time captioner that sits in on classes and then prints the lecture as the teacher talks. It's replacing interpreting positions here. Four of our positions are being lost to C-Print. Mostly that is for students who prefer to read English, rather than use sign. Interesting though.
Other than that, I've been contracted with a local interpreting agency. I was psyched. I had my first assignment offer...which I used "professional discretion..." You'll never guess what it was...okay, imagine your first freelancing job at a Gynocology Appointment!! :) Yeah,...no...
Ryan just came to visit. We had a great time, went to Niagrara Falls in Canada and just hung out. He got to see Arbor, which was nice. I miss the guy.
Sorry to ramble so much. Keep writing.
Miss ya all,
Suz

Hey you all! Yes! I am still alive and breathing out here in Idaho. Unfortunately my comp.access has been very random and have had problems with the computer once I have a chance to use it (I know, surprising isn't it Hal?)ANYWAYS...have been trying to keep up on the 'gossip' and you all frequent my thoughts regularly. Sorry about your car Jacs...you too Hal. Laura...is move with J a good thing? I'm doing all right! So glad to hear Arbor is developing socially! Idaho has had a cold spring, so I've been somewhat of a crank-ass (what's new?) I'm ready for sun!!!! Got to see Dawnette last night for a couple of hours of confering about internship stuff over a few adult beverages. It was great to see her and made me miss you all. My internship has been ...interesting. I am split between schools...an elementary classroom that has a teacher of the deaf and about 10 students all using ASL. And other days of the week I'm at a highschool doing transliterating. I think transliterating is HARD!!! but love it when my mentor says...Daniell, not so much ASL, Danielle, you need to shorten your lag time and be on top of the message. This week I will be doing a stint at a middle school working with an ASL interpreting situation, so we'll see how that goes. The best part yet was two days in a row I played kick ball with the 1st/2nd graders I work with! It really has helped me in building relationships with students...definately saw a switch in attitude and trust after the playing time. Many of the interpreters here have received me quite coldly...talked with Bonnie about it...how to handle stuff and start dialogue with others. Many working interpreters here are not very skilled and have little education...so I think I'm a bit intimidating and for those who think they don't need to be educated...really it's like holding a mirror in front of them and them facing who they are and what they can provide their clients. Bonnie's suggestion was -kill them with kindness, - respect and acknowledge their experience, -and create avenues of conversation that allows them to express their opinions/believes and then engage on their level...for example if an interpreter says "well, we didn't have to get degrees when I started interpreting" to say something like...'you are exactly right, and if you look at the history of interpreting...and in the last twenty years with law etc " basically bring them up to speed. I've also seen a lot of lateral oppression....ethical issues surfacing...issues of hearing parents with Deaf kids. Tough stuff. I've had my hands in the air a lot. I feel I have complete support from my mentor and with the interpreters I've worked with. What are you guys working on? What types of goal setting have you done? When you observe what types of things are you looking for? I miss you all and really enjoyed reading your comments. Priss..soooooo happy you are enjoying your internship and getting into it! Hal, maybe not spend so much time on the net...tired of hearing the busy signal (yes I HAVE called more than once) Had a bit of a breakdown last week freaking out about this being my professionand was looking into going back to school...I was thinking law, or nursing. BUT...have calmed down and relaxed a bit. Lynn helped bring life back into perspective. So...we're still an interpreter as of yet. Oh, yeah Lynn. He's good. We're good. My parents pretty much 'dissed me (oh brother, did I just use dis?)So...my plans of moving in with the pf's were out...so obviously I moved in with Lynn. That came with it's own issues etc,(mainly me obsessing over my life and how I'm not in control of absolutely everything - damn it!) but thus far it's been great. Miss seeing your faces and miss our jokes. God only knows my computer access...so if you don't hear from me...know I'm thinking of you.If you need/want to contact me ...feel free.Would love to hear from you anytime.Hope you enjoyed this short novel...sorry about the spelling errors...crummy sentencial structure...and inapplicable ramblings. Blessings and love -Danielle

Hey. I'm glad more people are getting on here! It was great to here from HALENE!!!

KATE, thanks for bringing up specific interpreting issues and questions to be discussed! I think that's fantastic!! I've tended to talk more about my experiences rather than the actual issues. However, I am withholding comment on your question, until I can hear other's perspectives. :)

But, just to catch up on sharing an experience :) ...I'm getting discouraged with my internship. I'm very comfortable now, but am not getting enough "hands-up" time Also, there are SO few deaf social events, that I feel at a total loss of ways to work on my language skills (which at this point is my biggest hold-back with interpreting). And the events that DO happen, are awkward because I don't know anyone. Anyway, I spoke with my mentor about it, and hopefully things will be looking up.

MY QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS...what types of things have you been interpreting? High and low moments???

Peace.

P.S. There is no sun...we've had nothing but RAIN. Makes me feel at home, like in OR. (At least I don't have to worry about skin cancer).

Hi, Troops!
Sounds like many of you are having the time of your lives, out in the "trenches". smile
Hope you are all healthy and happy! I know I miss your faces around campus. I still see Christina and Lauren, occasionally and briefly... as we are running from place to place. I see Hal a little more frequently; we actually have 1 hour a week that we team together. :)
Believe it or not, I really am busy this term. I am focusing on some specifics for improvement, and I DO have to complete all the forms, logs, etc, same as everyone else. And I am taking a computer science class this term, too. YEAH! One more LACC out of the way!!! If all goes well, it looks like I actually will be able to graduate summer 2005! I'm psyched about that.
The weather is getting nicer... (some days) and that makes me want to get outside and do something different. Guess I'll get my chance Aug. and Sept., before classes start again in the fall.
Well, I'm gonna run for now. It is great to hear how you all are doing. I miss ya much...
Peace and a BIG hug, Marla

Well, this week has been a bit slow in the interpreting area--still going to PSU, but very little happening in the church this week (post-easter stuff). Anyway, I continue to be have good and challenging experiences in both settings.

My last post, I mentioned some personal frustrations. Dan and I got a real shock last Saturday when Johnathan announced that he wants to live with us. Well, it was a good thing that this week was slow on the work front!!! It looks like it will all be going through and we will assume custody on August 1. Changes my plans a bit for next year. I'm not sure how much I will actually be interpreting. We'll see.

Sorry I won't be able to join y'all for the round table--weekends are actually work time for me. I will, however, be at the workshop on the 10th.

See you later.

Hi all!!
Kate got me all inspired to read the forum for the first time since we all started our internships. I am so excited for you all! Glad you are doing well in Idaho Dawnette. How are things going for you Danielle? Stephanie -- sounds like you are having a great time! I am so glad that you are someplace that exposes you to so much. Saw Hargraves in the WUC and he asked about both you and Danielle. Rory - rural oregon love to you ;) Glad you are having fun interpreting mystery stories, and yeah, the "interpreting" often continues into recess and following days and weeks. I have been fortunate to see Lauren, Marla, Kate, and Jacs fairly regularly. I hope to see Christina more - we mostly pass each other ** high fiving, back slapping, and doing that jump up and hit chests thing (cant you all just picture it!?) haha, just kidding. It would be great if all the "locals" could get together for a round table discussion like Erin suggested. Prissy - glad you are having such great real world experiences, finally something to start applying what we learned to huh? I have been focusing pretty intensely on my process - its been great. I need to get outta my head more and start doing other homework and studying for the RID written. shout out to Laura! Suz, kudos to you - way to put yourself out there. Tammy, sounds like you are gettin ur hands dirty, good for you. I think about you all - yay interpreting!!!

It is interesting to read everyones posts. I've noticed that our internships are greatly shaping our views as interpreters. Some times I think this is scary. Remember in Gish's class when I was throwing that fit about the "right" language for deaf children? Well, that taught me that nothing is black and white. I've noticed, not only because of the forumn posts but also my intern experience, that certification is neither a good or bad thing. In some situations it's needed/wanted/required and some it isn't. Each area has its own idea of what makes a good interpreter. Interpreters might agree on one fundimental issue, I'm not sure what that is yet, but for the most part interpreters and their interpreting ethics are just as diverse and proper as the language choice of d/Deaf individuals. No interpreter is better or worse because they are certified nor do I think that it is always required. It's obsurd to expect it. I think a certified interpreter is held in higher regard but I can't say that I think it makes them more qualified. I plan on becoming certified. If nothing else at least there is a general level of competency that I will meet. I am a person that needs to work toward a standard. I think it beneficial for legal, mental health and medical interpreters to be certified but some interpreters "get it" better than certified interpreters. (That's what I've seen)
What do you guys think? I'm trying to find a balance and be ok with it. It is quite easy for me to express opinions about what I think should be done, with no exceptions. I'm trying to play in the real world without the expectations of creating a Utopia. So what say you???

Hello everyone!
Steph and I are having a great time. We've decided it's like a week-long slumber party. We just keep talking and talking... Maybe we're pathetic, but still, half our conversations revolve around interpreting and stuff. I mean, you'd think we had other stuff to talk about, but interpreting's just so damn interesting! :) Anyways, we've had some very interesting discussions about how our internships are going and everything. It's great to be able just chat and chat about feelings, emotions, situations, etc.
Anyways, so I hope all is well with everyone! Take care and keep writing!
Suz

Okay I am not going to name names or diagnosis's here but I have a funny story concerning one of the students I work with. It might also explain some of my jumping out of the "Interpreter's role."

Anyways Bob (fake name) is a high school student - with additional needs beyond just having visual access. Bright kid though. Anyways we were reading a mystery story and I figured out the secret really fast and enjoyed teasing my team about it until she got it just before we started the second half of the story.

So the two of us are know it alls (after the hundred clues I gave her) and since we know the goal we shoudl be doing an awesome job of interpreting. Haha. Anyways we think everything is fine until the end when they announced who the killer was and everything...he first didn't get the story...then we found out he couldn't keep the story seperated from the story within the story...then he thought it was stupid to have a make-believe story in a story...by the time we convinced him that it was okay to have that, we found out he couldn't keep the story within the story seperated from the real story...then the pictures in the book confused him more..... I think it took us half an hour to get to the point of the story being two stories. We spent more time describing how they figured out who the murderer was and I still don't think he got that when we left. Not only that but he had forgotten that there was a story within the story...I ended up drawing a diagram describing who killed who and how things related...and I can only hope that he understood that. All three of us were late for our next class -- I have to say that it was very interesting...not only that but whatever the teacher was talking about during the rest of the period we had to save for later...

Okay - the story is not so fun when I edit it for leaking too much information but just imagine it like trying to find a definition for glad that says; see happy and when you turn to happy it says see glad...except that you have to find eight or nine words before you figure out that they cycle like that. It's a lot of fun.

Wow, you guys all sound like you are having a great time! I hope you are still writing this much in the fall when I am interpreting!

Anyway, I was talking with Kate, and I was really hoping to get together with everyone that is still in the area. She said something about getting together and having a round table discussion since everyone on their internships could really help each other and get help from that, and it would be good to see everyone again.

I was thinkning maybe we could have a spaghetti (or something) dinner, eeryone could bring something. I would like to coordinate it, but I just moved and my n ew house is not big enough to have people over in.. Is anyone interested? Can anyone have it at their house?

I miss you guys, and I hope things continue to go well for you.

Erin

I just wanted to thank all those who have been writing on the forum and emailing. I have been busy and have not been good about getting back but I am really missing everyone so I want to hear from you all because I have been able to now get on the computer more!
I have been interning ay WOU and having fun! I have been having good experiences with my mentor and other interpreters on campus who have been chatting with me.
I got permission just a little bit ago to start interpreting and I have been really liking it!
As for Kate's question about getting interested in the material I can relate to that. It happened to me in the beginning a lot during class. I started to answer things in my head or think of questions or things I would say. What I did for myself was start reading the text that is required for the class to know what was going to be discussed and taught before I go. One class that I am at is so interesting with all the slides and the teacher who is just awesome and you can tell just loves her job is so interesting that I find myself feeling like a student. But I have been seperating that more now. I just journal about it at home and get all my questions and comments out of my head and on the paper. The teacher has talked to me a bit after class about the class and some of the questions I have. I dont know if that helps but I know what you are feeling.
Well I am so glad we have this so everyone can talk! I hope everyone is having fun, and I have to say I miss that security of knowing that Tuesday morning I will see all of you, but anyway have a good day and lets keep writing and emailing!!

Flying to NY today to visit Suzanne. Woo hoo!

Anyway, as with most of you, I am also gaining great insight into the "real world of interpreting". California is very interesting in the fact that it does have LEGAL standards set up for qualifications...they are that you must be 1) graduate of ITP OR 2) RID Certified or 3) Highly NAD certified. All of the interpreters working at CQ (Communique) are appalled at the mention of anything else (well, because it's illegal). VERY INTERESTING! HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that all of those laws are being followed. A similar agency has a reputation for doing a lot of "illegal work" by not meeting those standards. I met some of the interpreters yesterday...very scary attitudes and practices.

Anyway, terps here at CQ have no idea of things that happen outside of CA. Typical Californians, think they're the only thing in the world happening. :) Just kidding.

Anyway, about RID, the code of ethics, and Educational settings...I am learning a lot about how the RID Code of Ethics DOES apply to an ED setting, but in different ways than any other setting. Also coming HEAVILY into play is that I am an ADULT in this setting working with minors. That has a great impact on my role and does effect how I interpret the code of ethics for this particular setting.

For those of you who don't know much about CQ, it is an Agency who does LOTS of the Free lance/Community work in the area, but also contracts with the local school districts. So, interpreters aren't staff of the school, but working FOR CQ at the school. Interesting set-up that brings up ALL SORTS of issues.

I've been observing all sorts of activities from 6th grade special ed classes all the way to community business meetings. Very fascinating. Love some interpreters, despise others. :)

Funny thing...there are some AWESOME ITP's in this state!!! Unlike Dawnette's experience, I am meeting people who have had EXCELLENT TRAINING. YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE THE ASSIGNMENTS THEY HAD AND THE THINGS THEY DID IN THEIR PROGRAMS. ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING!!!

Well, that's all for now. Hope to hear from others of you. I want to know what your big "Ah-ha's" have been!!!

Hey Everyone - it was good to read your messages on the forum and see how everyone is doing. I have had a wondeful experience at Salem Heights so far. The staff there are great to work with and very welcoming. I've heard quite a few complaints about the pay scales for interpreters in education around this area. But my experience in the school system has been very educational so far. I had heard that Salem Heights is all signed English. Although some of the interpreters are very English signers (some of the students are very English oriented), there isn't a rule to sign English. The kids at the school (all) take ASL classes regularly (they met Prissy this week). Almost all of the staff know at least some sign language. They try to sign in order to meet the students' needs or wants.

I had one interesting experience with what Bonnie called "leave your ego at the door" when a girl didn't want me to interpret for her - she wanted her regular interpreter. It didn't bug me because I remember what it was like to be that age and have something or someone new. Kids that age are snotty - litterally sometimes. Remember the pyramid about how when kids are in the lower grades they need more assistance and less responsibility? And then as they get older, they become more independent and responsible? I think the older kids appeal to me more than the younger ones. Although - let me tell you - they are very fun to work with. My mentor is awesome. I'm lucky.

anyway... hope to keep up with all of you.

Cheers ~ Tammt

Hey there everyone,
Well, I really really like it here. I'm getting in a lot of interpreting practice and socializing. It's been great to go to different performances...I went to one that was directed by Patrick Graybill...I felt so in the prescence of a celebrity when I saw him there! It was a funny play that had both hearing and Deaf actors. They did the same play, but on two separate sides of the stage...so there were no "interpreters" but rather hearing actors saying their lines in conjunction to the Deaf actor's signing their lines...very interesting set up. There have been conferences and a weekend celebration. This past weekend, Gallaudet Students came up to NTID for Brickfest. It's a weekend of fun, food and games. I went to this "party" thing that was sponsored by the school...it lasted until 2 AM!! (Way past my 9 PM bed time)! But I stayed up and chatted the whole time. It was a lot of fun. My mentor is great. She went to WOU too and we have a lot in common. She's been really supportive. Yesterday we worked on voicing from a video tape...I realized my voice sounds over-eager and desperate to just get all the signs...ack...she made me stop the videotape and "chunk" it by paraphrasing it. We also had to work on affect. I always thought affect was easy until I stood in front of a class of all Deaf students and tried to interpret about post-WWI Europe. ACK. Oh well...it's improved...But MILES to go before I rest... :)
Oh, don't worry everyone...ARBOR is doing GREAT! I know you've all been very concerned! He LOVES his new house and he has a new best friend named Luke...Luke's a Beagle. They play all day together. They're adorable.
Okay, well, I'm glad some people are using this Forum thing. :) It's always so hard to remember to check it!
Miss you all,
Suz
