Sounds to me like the bandit got sick of you looking to twink him for his equipment and decided it was time to teach the teacher a lesson.

I doubt it was one of the staff looking to nail you for it, as if I recall there are some random rolls involved each time an NPC spawns. What that means is each of them spawns with a random stat and skill roll, so one bandit might be a complete wuss, and the next one of the same type might be a super hero. Take into account that NPCs gain skill the longer they live and don't suffer the set-backs of the anti-powergaming code, and you've a perfectly legitimate reason why that NPC turn around and whooped it up on you.

You might have gained 1% to your offence and defense skills for that fight, where as the NPC might have gained 5-10% due to the fact it kept missing and being hit. Keep that in mind, sensi, before you look to go giving those bandits their next lesson.

Heres a piece of tired wisdom:
Live by the sword, die by the sword - there is always someone better.
