Unless you autogen (which you can only do...I think...for a handfull of times), you will need to type in your character's physical description. Spend quite some time trying to imagine what it would be like to meet your character for the first time. What would someone notice if they just passed you on the street?
It's important to remember that you should't type up a description that includes your personality traits; just use your physical appearance. Use the nice emote system, and the parenthetical say ability to get across your personality quirks.
Also, I find "beautiful people" to be someone annoying. This is just me, though. Resist the urge to create the angelic, hulking Adonis (unless this is really what you wnat to look like, of course). Ugly people inhabit the world, too, you know. ;)
You will also be asked for you age when you begin, and this is a VERY IMPORTANT choice to make as age directly affects your ability scores and thus your starting skills. The younger you are, the quicker you'll be. The older you are, the more feeble you'll be. In general, the older you are the smarter your character will be.
Keep in mind, though, that yes, ability scores are nice, but ultimately it's how you play your character that is the rewarding part of being in this MUD. You can have just as much fun (perhaps even more) with a slow, wimpy moron as you can with an ancient, wisend old sage. Use your ability scores (and skills) to *aid* your RP, not to define it.
Some useful commands you might like to know:
change long description. Use this command to set your character's "long" description...or what people see when they enter the room. Example: my character is sitting at a table and carving something out of oak. Since this is something someone else would actually notice, I'd like to reflect that in my long description. Here's what I'd type:
change long desc is sitting at the table working her dagger across an oak stick.
When someone walks into the room, they'll see:
The sickly young disfigured girl is sitting at the table working her dagger across an oak stick.
say (parenthetical) and tell (parenthetical). Useful commands. Use "say" when you're talking to the whole room. Use "tell" to speak to a single person. If you place a (parenthetical) behind it, you can define a short action or an emotion along with your speech. Example:
say (as she slings her lute behind her back) Come with me to the bar, I'm going to be singing there.
People will see:
The sickly young disfigured girl says as she slings her lute behind her back in :
"Come with me to the bar, I'm going to be singing there."
writing. Feel free to leave IC messages on the various boards (usually located in taverns). However, after you have finished and posted your message, it is imperative you type "write" afterward so the message will save. Just "write" without any arguments at all. Should you neglect this step, your message will disappear after a shutdown/crash. You can also write on scrolls and books. See the help files for this.
That's it for now...hopefully someone else will post some advice for you...
