An item I'd like to add:

As a first character, I'd try and attach yourself with a group like a noble house, the military, or a group of a like class... You'll find that a lot of the leaders of these organizations have had probrably logged many hours and would be able to help you with a lot of the ins and outs of the game... Usually when you are attached to a house or a military body, you get certain benefits that can be quite helpful to your character...
