I think the economy is on a good turn, Four Lands is trying to fluxuate out the nuances of vnpc's to create a more player driven world and yes, there are drawbacks as many are seeing. Some of it is actually tied into IC plots.

The system puts severe weight on merchant classed pc's to use their bartering skills and buy excesses from various shops to drive prices back up in which they can begin making money. The first type of any item goes for a price many times higher than the second, and third, and fourth. These characters are able to make mounds and mounds of money once they get rolling.

City Leaders are running out of money because these are no longer immortal appointed positions. If you make it this high and have established no form of regular income (having someone with merchanting abilities) then you've got a problem. The amount of 'free rides' out there is sharply dwindling.

So you've got a pc of anything but thief or merchant who generally has no job skills that are not associated with killing. People are not mining, farming, or foraging to bring in money. When there's no legit employment out there, these people generally resort to brigandry and other less savory means.

As for money in the shops on a decline, I think theres a certain underestimate of the amount that new players are spending compared to what established players are selling. The newbies are winning and in lean times noble players can shut off buying from outside sources to supplement a weak treasury. Nobles have alot of coin, the problem here is that no one has been alerted to openings in the houses to go play them. I know Nadu is wide open and Kavka could certainly use some help. Maybe something similar could be set up or accomplished in Haven.

Real need has been created for merchants, this is good. Infinite money raw goods shop is not something I'd support as then there'd be no reason to play anything but warriors and the like.

Four Lands is a very different type of RPI. Most 'problems' that need to be solved go a different route other than establishing something immortal run like vnpc's. Not happy with the economy? Play a merchant or get someone else to.

Its up to players to make things work
