thought it would be a way to foster some activity here. Answer one of the three questions here and list some of your own. It would be nice to incorporate something to do with life in Essex, since this is at least one thing we all have/had in common. I'll break the ice:

Back in 1969, the year three American astronauts first landed on the moon, I/we attended a split session at which Essex Junction graded school? Why were the classes split (morning and afternoon sessions)? and finally, who was the principal at the time? - Remember answer the questions and then post new ones for others to answer..

Since the above questions may pre-date some, or not apply if you attended the Center schools please consider the bonus questions.

Bonus questions: where were you in 1969? Can you remember other historic events from this year?

Prospect Street School. Classes were split because there were too many kids. The high school was being built to accommodate the growth. The plan was for the junior high to move to the old high school (now ADL)and of course the high schoolers would move into the new Educational Center. The principal was Stan Knapp. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

My question is: What Beatles song was released that year? I know it's not an Essex question but who doesn't know the Beatles?!?

I agree with Moe's answers. Talk about dusting off the cobwebs. No clue what the beatles song was. Let's see..
how about this....What was the name of the gas station at the 5 corners where the Chittenden bank is now? What subjects did Mrs.Allen, Mrs.Liberty, Mrs.Pierce, Mrs.Tanner, Mr.Clifford and Mrs. Parizo teach at Summit St School?

I know the answer to all these questions. I'm just waiting to give someone else a chance. I'll Let It Be for now...

It was Robinson's. I remember when Tim, Jon and I use to ride like hell down Pearl and cut through, with old man Robinson coming out to yell at us!
Ok here's one
Name five stores that were in the Brownell Block.
I do remember some of those teachers, but were they all at Summit St?
Oh the P stands for Prior

Yes, they did all teach at Summit St.
Tip Top News, Phil's, Henry's Market, wasn't there a pharmacy on the corner? Oh well, that's all I can remember.
I used to go to Tip Top's after school everyday for bubblegum and string licorice......ah the memories. Who's next?

ok, maybe I don't remember all those names, but Mrs. Tanner was my 5th grade Science teacher. I had her at Prospect Street (thanks Moe)! She now lives in Central Vermont with daughter Dianne and her son-in-law. I see Margaret quite often at a local Christian health center where she works and I volunteer.

Mr. Clifford was math? Mrs. Parizo, english? I believe she was a legislator for a while too?

Questions: What was the name of the little store at the corner of West and South Street? What was the principal's name at Hiawatha in 1968? Name three gym teachers at ADL in the 1970's...Why do I care?

I think I may be losing touch with reality...

Tim, good job in getting some banter and discussion going..:-) I do remember going half days to sixth grade and what a great year that was. I lived on Prospect school and it was so convenient and then add only going to school for half a day, that was super! By the way, I think Mo had the answer right... Mr. Guiffre (sp?) was one of the teachers then and he was good. Good ole Mr. Clifford - I was rummaging around a little while ago into my photo albums and came across a skit we did about him... it was so silly...:-)

Well, I think I wrote enough today to last at least a month or so... once I get going, sometimes it's hard to stop. It's just nice tor read about folks and places that were part of my life so many years ago.

Take care and catch you on the flip side... Aloha

As I read through this message board, I saw reference to someone on survivor from Vermont? I haven't been watching the show, so I didn't know... Where is that person from in Vermont? That's pretty cool, for sure. When I lived in Virginia, the older guy on the first Survivor show was from Virginia Beach and everyone was all pumped about it... parades and the whole nine yards. Ah, his name was Rudy, the retired Navy Seal... I can only hope I'm in that good shape when I'm 72...:-)

Ok, I know this isn't much of a question, especially since the church is still there, but what's the name of the church on the corner of Prospect and Lincoln street? Sorry, it's been too long since I lived there and that's the only question I know the answer to...:-)

Huumm, I read through my message, after I sent it, and noticed I wrote that I lived on Prospect "school" instead of "street", so I tried to edit it, only to find that when it was displayed, it didn't show up in the sequence I wrote it... the paragraphs were mixed up...

What's up with that??? Oh well, you all might just think that was the way I think these days, but we are all the same age, so don't go and throw in some logic about old age and such....:-)

Bye again... Robin

yeah, the features on this board leave a lot to be desired Robin, but it's free. If we can continue to rummage up some interest in this kind of communication we might want to consider a little fancier board. If anyone has any ideas on that I'm all ears.

The church was called the Holy Family Catholic church, I believe, and a good portion of our class attended there. I remember there was a youth center in the basement of the fellowship hall that used to be open. I crashed the joint a few times and wrestled with the police chief's son on the front lawn...memories

Does anyone remember the name of the bar that was right in front of Baker's Motel? We used to get served in there in high school. Also, what was the Acropolis called before it was the Acropolis? And, how many people know the name of the bar at the bowling alley? I only remember the answers to the last two questions. Oh, one more; did I drink too much?

Gee Patti, All of your references are about bars. Hmmm.... I don't remember the names of them.
A couple more stores on the Brownell Block were Remington's and Eno's Drugs I think. What about 13 Main Patti?
Mr Clifford retired from ADL only about 5 years ago. My daughter had him for 7th grade math. He was going to move to Colorado.
What was the name of the little diner that was on Pearl Street across from the Tree Nursery is?

Wow very good Kathy or is it Kathie. You remembered the 5 I was thinking of. Little diner?
I can still here the creaking floor at Remington's and Miss Remington waiting on us as we got some new clothes from her to start the new school year. I think it was where we would also get our school pencils and if we were really good, a Quick Draw MacDraw zip plastic pencil holder case!

That would be Kathy. Kathie is me, you ask, who's Kathie?
That's for you to guess.....remember. I think I was the only one in the class that spelled it that way.

I don't remember a diner down there! I don't even remember what was there before Midas.

Kathy....congratulations to your daughter graduating. It doesn't seem possible that our kids are growing up so fast!!!

good job everyone, we seem to have had a few bursts of nostalgia here and this is a good start. We still don't know the former name of the Acropolis or the bar at the bowling alley, but I believe it was owned by the Snyders. We need the name of the diner on Pearl Street down by the Wendy's (but wait it's not Wendy's anymore). I remember delivering the newspaper to Muncies diner on Main Street next to the 5 corners. David remembers getting his briefs at Remingtons and probably still has the Quick Draw MacGraw pencil case (in mint condition no doubt). I'm still looking for the name of our principal at Hiawatha. As I remember Patti, you could always hold her own with the boys, and I don't think I ever saw you tipsy. Happy Father's Day everyone!

The principal's name at Hiawatha was "Hyman". If only we had known just how funny that is back when we were there! He paddled a few trouble-makers, like Gary Valway. Mike Tortarella (sp?) was let out of school 15 minutes early, so he could make it home before Gary Valway and others beat up on him. I recall Tom Jones getting caught looking up Miss Chapin's dress.....she wasn't a bad looking woman! Miss Seaver taught sex-ed there.....yikes! As I remember, she got fired later on for physical abuse.....or something like that. Just looking at her was abuse. Ahhhh, those were some good times. What ever happened to the "big bully" Bill Dutton. He used to hide in the corn field and wait for kids to beat up. "I" recall Patti snippered a few times. There used to be some good parties.

I remember Mike Tortarello's mother following him home in her car from ADL, I never understood why she didn't just give him a ride. I also remember Mr. Hyman sewing up my pants when I split them. I stayed in a bathroom stall while someone took them to him. He wasn't only a disciplinarin ( I had to look that one up to spell it )but a seamstress.

Bill Dutton was last seen driving truck for S.T. Griswold and as for the Torterellas, well the old Cascadnac gang could tell some stories there. Is John Quimby still alive? He had to have been doing some heavy drugs in grade school. I remember in 5th grade with Mrs. Bingham, a student by the name of Nina Oakley would teach us Norwegian folk dances. Then she would make the boys pick a partner. John Quimby, for some reason, always picked me. Just saw Mariann Gregoire today coming out of EMS - Fathers Day shopping.

OK Tim. In 1969 was Woodstock. The 82nd Airborne Division pulled out of Vietnam, and the Amazing Mets won the world series.

Here is a question. What was Merle Haggerts number one song that year?
