i just have a plain old $99 brother sewing machine from walmart that i have been using for years. it does all the stitch functions you need for basic sewing....zig zag, straight stitch, button holes, etc. but you will need a serger to fishline hem your skirts. you don't have to have one...some people zig zag their skirts, but to me, it is alot more work and a fishline hem looks nicer. i have an inexpensive serger too...i think i paid $200 or $250 for it a few years ago. it is a brand name too....simplicity i think. i think the most important thing is that you keep them oiled and cleaned and they will run nice and smooth. hope this helps :+)
