I've been working on cleaning out my workroom. I still have lots of fabric (chiffon, nylon sparkle, liners), stones and laces that I will be selling. All fabric is $1.25 a yard. Stones will be wholesale cost. Email if you would like a list of items left. I am still doing an inventory of the miscellaneous items such as thread, serger thread, fishing line, bridal flowers (just about anything you need to make pageant dresses). Basically, I will be selling for the prices I paid, which is always wholesale. So take advantage of this opportunity while it lasts. Email me at dshawn@eatel.net. Thanks and Happy New Year

Is there a trick to the lattice pattern used in stoning? I didn't know if it should be applied onto a trim, applied as a chain, or if they were loose stones carefully applied in the lined pattern. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

i buy flatbacks.....usually 16ss or 19ss. i take a ruler and start drawing the lines with a fabric pen. you have to be very sure about the placement before you mark if you are using dyed material. if it is factory, then the fabric pen will just wipe off. get a 45 degree angle one way and keep moving your ruler over lining up with the previous line you drew and mark a new line until you are finished all one way, then reverse your ruler the other way and start drawing your lines the same way to make diamond shapes. i hope that makes sense. then you just take e-6000 or gem glue and run a bead of glue over each line and stone. it isn't as hard as my description sounds....i'm just not good at describing lol

I have found it is easiest to print out a lattice pattern and trace it on the bodice with a disappearing fabric marker found for 1.50 at Walmart. You'll have time to stone following the pattern and then it will disappear! You can also lay a flat simple trim, glue or sew it down, then stone that. Either works fine.

I am looking for someone to make a 4T swimwear shell for me. I already have the fabric, and the design I would like. I do not have the lining fabric. My Mom usually sews the shells for me and I decorate, but she recently had shoulder surgery and is unable to sew. I would need the swimwear as least a few days before GG, so I can decorate it. Please send me examples of your work and your price to charity485@aol.com
Thanks!

I am getting ready to attempt my first shell. I have all the parts in place for the machine. I need to know what weight fishing twine to use. And for the really curly skirt I remember once someone saying about wrapping the twine around a dowel rod, I was wondering what size dowel rod and about how many yards go into a ruffle for a cupcake skirt. All help greatly appreciated. Im excited Ive always wanted to make a shell and do a dress myself.

1) Any ideas how to get a water stain out of satin? The skirt is satin and it's covered with two layers of organza. I can still see the water stain in natural light. It bugs me LOL. The dress (Perfect Angel) says no drycleaning.

2) Also I have a Tiffany dress that appears to be altered? Is it normal for the inner layer of the skirt to be attached by a few threads (looks like they are long strings of thread knotted together). I'm not a seamstress...lol...but how easy would it be to lengthen the skirt? OR should I leave it up to a professional. :-D

Hello, I am wanting to start making pageant dresses for my 3 year old daughter. Right now I am only sewing simple things like pillowcase dresses, tutus, & pants, but I am really serious about doing this. Does anyone have any suggestions on resources to help me get started. Maybe some patterns, suggestions on what type of material to use, and where to shop for glitz & material?? Help will be greatly appreciated!!! I am very crafty and would love to dedicate my energy to this. I am willing to take a class or buy books, anything to learn how. I live in a very small town in Missouri & haven't come across anyone to help. This is my first time on this website. I just ran across it from googling. I am gonna save it to my favs but please email me.Thanks to anyone interested in helping me pursue this hobby.

[> Subject: You can buy patterns from mypageantkid on ebay or on her website. You'll need to get superstretch and chiffon or organza. Practice doing a rolled hem with fishing line for the skirt and getting the layers to lay right on the skirt. Most of the seamstresses on her have their own way to do the skirts - there's really no exact rule on it. Hope that helps.

Nancy, my kids have the Guitar Hero band game for Wii and they absolutely love it. They play it all the time, and when their dad gets home from work he plays it with them. It is easily the most played game they have. It came with a guitar, drum set and mic for singing, and so far, even though there's a lot of plastic they don't any signs of breaking. There are other cool things you can do like designing your own character and tutorials. They've enjoyed it so much I would recommend it. Hope this helps!

Her dresses are pure quality. The fabrics are top of the line, the bodices are boned and very firm. Stoning is intricate and really stays on well. Her designs are amazing.

My tension I think needs adjusting. I have a brothers project runway limited edition. When I want to do a gathered stitch I set it to a 1, stitch length is as wide as I can make it (either a 5 or 7 I can't remember) and the tension is on a 9. It barely gathers. I need it to gather as tight as possible without the thread breaking. Is there any way to change that? My old machine just had me screw a tiny screw in the bobbin a tiny bit and everything was fine but this machine is different and I can't find where to do that at.

If your manual does not give that info then.....put your machine back to it's original maufacturing settings and mark them. Then adjust and play around with it till you do get it right. And when you're finished doing the gathering, you'll know where to set all your dials and tensions back to it's origianl settings. HTH!

it will only let me change the tension on the dial at the top. No way to tighten it with a screw or anything. The tightest tension barely gathers and I have no idea how to change the tension any other way on this machine. Hope that makes sense.

Just curious if any designers have been successful with selling wholesale. I have had some experience selling my handbag line a few years ago. I have some appointments next week with a couple of local stores. I am tired of EBAY. Everyone wants a bargain and you just don't make enough for the time you put into each piece.

Typically the low end prices are dresses that are designed "en mass" or with no particular customer in mind. Bear in mind, you won't find much of a demand for that market. The big name designers, such as Teresea Yee, Tina Marshall, Lil' Louky, etc., work on customer requests.

Also, people go to ebay for bargains, so that is not a huge surprise. JMO

I guess for me I like creating my own designs not sewing for a customer. I also don't like the alterations. I am still going to try it and maybe sell locally and in my state. There are some local stores that could use some better "off the rack" stuff that is for sure! If I had a retail store I think it would be neat to have one of a kind pieces to offer customers who maybe do not have time or money for custom. I would rather sell several pieces at once, get rid of them and move on to the next design. LOL. Thanks for any advice!!

get some wooden dowls at the craft store and wrap the ribbon you are using around it (i secure with a little tape on the ends). bake in the oven at 250 for about 15-20 minutes (depending on the ribbon). take it out and let it cool. this melts the polyester in the ribbon just enough to give it that "korker" curl that you are looking for. i use a wood burner to cut the ribbon into smaller pieces, which melts the ends and keeps it from fraying. hth :)

first, measure all the way around the boot at the top where the cuff goes. then decide how wide you would like the cuff. i usually make mine around 4 inches thick. cut a long rectange for each boot cuff. make them 2 inches longer than your boot cuff length for fastening room, and then make them about 5 inches wide so you will have room to fold the edges over and stitch them. just hem all the way around all 4 raw edges, put velcro or snaps on the ends to fasten them, and you have perfect boot cuffs.

Hi -
I do custom applique as well as embroidery to order. Due to issues with licensed artwork I can do the grinch hand holding an ornament but unable to create the face and body.

If I can help with your project, just let me know.

Thanks!

It's time to clean the sewing room! I will be selling chiffon, organza, and liners by the bolt. Many colors. Also, lots of laces, trims and appliques. Rhinestones, thread, you name it, I probably have it. Been making pageant dresses for 24 years and accumulated lots of stuff. I buy wholesale and will pass the savings to you. I'm doing an inventory now and will have a better idea of everything as time goes by but if you're interested in anything or everything drop me an email. Email address: dshawn@eatel.net

Hi Wilma, I email you but maybe I am still in your junk email filter. I was wanting to know what you would suggest for someone just starting to sew glitz. I have been sewing pageant sportswear and casualwear but have decided to start sewing the high glitz. I have a few patterns and would like to start with 1 or 2 dresses for samples.

My email is maggiemae@rraz.net.

Thanks,

Susie

I can understand having custom designs and paying for them, I would expect that, but what is the deal with the consignment websites with these prom dresses for 400.00 and up, I know that they did not pay that much, just because and off the rack dress won a national pageant does not put the price up too more than the original price paid, am I wrong?

I think I can answer that. I bought a brand name dress not too long ago off ebay for my daughter and got a great deal. It's a beautiful dress, but it will have to be stoned before it's competitive. I have a lot of pricey leftovers from other projects I can use, but it's still going to cost me probably $200 above that to get it the way I want it. Since a lot of people buy the dresses at bridal and prom shops, they're probably paying anywhere from $200-$500 depending on the shop, the brand and any sales discounts. Add a good amount of stoning on top of that and the costs add up. It's really easy to sink $600-$700 or more into one of these dresses. That's why they seem so expensive when people start to sell them. The downside is anyone can buy a dress and add their own stonework, so you're less likely to get a good price for them.

I totally agree about the communication from mypageantkid!!!! So true. It was an ordeal. I do feel her patterns are a little short waisted but a great starting place. I alter them to fit the client. I wish I had the pattern making software so I could make my own but it is fairly pricey. Does anyone know how to free hand cut your own clothes? I would love to learn.

I have made several dresses both with and without boning. I'm curious to hear from mims and other seamstress which they prefer and if there are certain situations where one style is preferred over the other. I'm working on a bodice with princess seams and contemplating if I should put boning in. Any comments welcome.

i would put boning in..the reason for boning is to give it support and to keep shape..i have done both as well because i have clients that on certain ages don't want it but to me it just adds that extra definition /shape to the bodice..it looks more professional to me...but that is my personal opinion..i have been sewing for over 15 yrs...god bless all...

My small 16 month old is going to need a cupcake dress for next year. Probably around a size of 18 months or 2T. She is very small so I would need a custom top made. Tank style, flared.... I have photos of what I want. Solid white.

I would even be willing to purchase a pattern and sew it myself. So if anyone is interested in sewing just the bodice top at a good price or selling me a custom pattern at a good price let me know. Thanks!

Thank you... I just placed my order at Tami's Place. Had to go with the pear flatbacks, because they do not carry the Chaton's yet..... FYI...in about two weeks, she said they will be carrying a line of chaton (pointed back) fancy stones.

I have never used the flat back fancy stones, but they look really nice on the site, and I have never been dissappointed from thier products before.

Have a wonderful day everyone!!!

I have experimented with dying fabric (I have not done a finished garment) and all I do is fill my stainless sink with a bottle of acrylic paint(I have used all different brands from Walmart & Hobby Lobby with no problem) and enough warm water to dilute it and cover your fabric. Maybe a 2 quart pitcher full at the most. I soak the fabric, then ring it out gently and make sure all areas are covered then lay on some old towels to air dry a little. After the excess drips on to the towels I throw towels and fabric in the dryer. Keep your paint solution and dip at least one more time, maybe more if it not dark enough. BEWARE: your dryer will be coated in paint on the inside. I just wipe it done with a scrubby sponge aand towel. It is a lot of work. I have started doing all my dying for several pieces all at once...That is why designers charge more for dying.LOL.

I will agree with you that since I started in this biz I have noticed that the websites, if they even exist, are pathetic! I am still trying to get some samples made for my site, but at least it is out there (www.pinkbiscuitsandchocolategravy.com)and looks decent. Everyone needs to get on www.tiaratalk.net. It will help solve that problem! I think Nancy Landers (don't know her, never even talked to her) is good and has a good rep, you can get her thru EBAY. Also DBH kids (Holly somebody) seems to have a good rep.

Are to very good sites. Show many examples But are higher in price. Both are very reputable designers.

The Pink Biscuit & Chocolate gravy site...was not a good site when viewing. It showed to samples of plain dresses. Neither of them would be considered Mega glits, Med. Glitz or even. semi glitz.
I don't know anyone from the above listed websites...but the person inquiring was looking for a good glitz dress site and the pink biscuit site would not be a good reference in my opinion.

Oops...I think I just "Stuck foot in mouth". Tiffany if the pink biscuit site is yours. I was not meaning to be disrespectful in anyway or form. I didn't realize you were recommending your own site. You are right, at least it is there. It's just when I visited the sites, I only saw two non-glitz samples. I apologize if I seemed to come off a little negative, it truly was not ment to be that way.

I am a little put off by the comment because I was not saying that I did high glitz dresses. But at least I have STARTED with a decent website. I believe in packaging and would not want to have a crappy site. Rome was not built in a day. I do not advertise as a glitz dress designer. I am LEARNING about this little girl biz. You have to start somewhere and I believe that I would be skeptical of the way somebody conducts business if they can not even manage a good looking website in 2009!!!

Again..I apology. I did not mean to come off sounding harsh or seem to believe your site was bad. When I saw that it was listed...I checked it out. My first thought was not a glitz website....which is what the first poster was asking for a references too. When I re-read your post... I realized you were only offering your site as an alternative to an UP AND RUNNING site (Because so many or now longer available)...and you did not imply your site was a glitz pagaent website. You are right..a web-site has to start somewhere!! I truly did not mean anything negative by my first post or was intended to be a personal jab. I was trying to get the person the information they requested. That is why I re-posted, saying foot in mouth. I actually like your wording, and how you made the site personal..people will feel like they know you. A sincere best wishes your way.

I was contacted through my email account through my carrier about 2 months ago with an email that I thought was ebay and it is actually an attempt to steal your info, here is how it works, the email actually looks like the ebay website but the catch is they ask you to log onto your account through the email and that is when they get your account info, I contacted ebay myself and sent them a copy of the email and its called spoof mail, they contacted me back, ebay will never contact you like that asking for your info if any doubt go to ebay.com sign on and check your messages then if you have been contacted through that email then its legit, if not your trying to be ripped off. So please be careful everyone has to watch especially with the holidays around the corner.

I got one of those about a month ago. It claimed that I had sold them video game system for $500 and never shipped it. It claimed that they had filed a paypal claim and I needed to repsond. When you clicked it took you to paypal site that you had to log into. I backed out and forwarded the email to both ebay and paypal who both said they were a scam.

We have always used baby wipes. they work great. But I agree lots of elbow grease. I have stopped using the dryer for my trim and we just use a blow dryer (hairdryer) but we still do our material in the dryer with towels.

Was it acrylic paint? I have been there. When I first started doing these dresses and reading the forums the same thing happened to me, except mine was hot pink. I took a scrubby sponge and wiped it all down inside with warm soapy water. It took about 15-20 minutes. Not too bad but after that I now lay my dyed pieces on towels to air dry for a little bit and they are not as wet when I put them in the dryer. Some people iron them dry between towels.

A few months ago I ordered a decorated shell from a well known designer. I paid quite a lot (750.00) for it, and when I received it, the skirt is not a custom superfull ball gown style skirt I had requested and sent pics of. I received a Tiffany off the rack skirt with a super stretch waist band. Needless to say I know a otr skirt when I see one, it came complete with emboridary, seed beads and sequins. I could even feel the rest of the skirt/dress part under the waist band. Pretty much it seems to be the bottom of a prom dress with a superstretch waist band on top. I still haven't heard from the designer, and she knows I sent back the skirt. I even communicated with her about redoing a skirt and resent the pics of the skirt I had in mind. She still hasn't picked up the skirt I sent a week later, and I'm worried she's trying to blow me off. What do I do?

I would try to be nice and calm in resolving until you don't get anywhere. It could just be a misunderstanding. If you do not get anywhere within an acceptable time frame, maybe a week? I would attempt to get my money back either through Paypal or if you used a credit card call your bank and dispute the transaction. If she is a legit designer, I am sure she would want to make you happy. If all else fails have an attorney draft a letter and just go elsewhere for another skirt. That really stinks!

Need a suggestion! I have 100 % feedback on ebay. I pay my seller fees direct thru my account.
Ebay has for the second time in less than a week shut down my auction. I get these crazy emails that don't tell me much other than I have violated something, it seems to me from reading it's seller fees. I go to my account and it states as of Oct 21, 2209 my balance is 0.00. I check my cking account which is where my automatic payments come out and the last payment is there and cleared. I don't think I've did anything wrong. Now, I've lost all the people that had bid, as well as the people asking questions.
Who do I call or what do I do I can't find a number anyplace to call, I can send an email which I have already did. Any suggestions! Grrrrrrrr!

Ebay does not have a # because they do not want you to call, can you imagine how many calls they would get. You will probably have to email them. It could be as simple as someone is reporting you for listing your web address in the description. I noticed one the other day (I did not report it but that is against their listing rules).

Ebay has a live help. There is a link to click in the live help box for "account suspension". They can probably answer your questions there.

have to search for it. I had to call one to get my hubby's auction canceled for an incorrect listing. Because there was less than a day left I couldn't just do it myself. I called the 1 800 number, explained the situation, and they said this would be a one time favor. I believe you can go to the problem area of ebay and find it there. Be wary of emails, because lots are fake ones to get information like passwords etc.

I like making flowers out of gathered organza. I use plain old plastic buttons (that way you can stitch them on instead of gluing)in different sizes as the centers. I usually dip the button in fine glitter or add rhinestones. Then just run a strip folded over through your ruffler foot and wind it around the button and secure with glue. You can do the same thing with ribbon.

I am going to be stoning a shell I am purchasing from a designer (haven't done this in years!).

It is going to be orange. I love ab crystal and will be using mostly those, but what color should I go with for depth on the orange? She hasn't had an orange dress since she was a baby.

Also, I know everyone has always said merchantoverseas is really good to get stones from but how do I get set up with them? I am looking to buy a TON of stones. So, I don't want to go the ebay route - they are too overpriced. Where else can I get them cheap and fast (shaped too)?

I have never purchased from Merchants...but was told shipping can be costly thru them...not for sure though. Rhinestoneforless charges $10.00 for shipping from $0-$100.00. I personally feel that is too high for shipping.

I use Tami's Place. Great bulk pricing. And most of the time Free shipping. I have used the company's ebay site, and was able to get even better deals, on occassion. Never been dissappointed. www.tamisplace.com example just looked on the site...for bulk 1440 Swarovski crystal AB's 16ss $69.00 including shipping...that's only $6.90 a gross. If there is a less expensive vendor right now, I would LOVE to know... please pass it on. Because every penny does count in today's market.

I wanted some opinions about pricing. I have been sewing a long time but just recently started making pageant dresses. One of my daughter's friend has started doing a lot of pageants and instead of renting a dress came to me for something custom. I know I am not yet the caliber of some of you awesome designers but for a two color custom top and 6 layer cupcake skirt, off the shoulder with appliques and some fabric ruffling at the shoulders, not to mention probably 5 gross of Swarovskis, I quoted $450. Does that sound too high or low? They are friends but now I have heard nothing and I hope I have not made them mad.

Hi, everyone. I was recently invited to join a new pageant social networking group called Tiara Talk. It's like Facebook or MySpace except it's for anyone involved in pageants, including parents and vendors, and is free. There are forums, chat and various groups you can join, and you can post a profile with photo albums. Since everyone has to register I'm hoping this will be a great community without the backbiting and bashing we see on some of the voy forums. You have to be invited to sign up but they're encouraging everyone to invite lots of people to get things going. If you think you might be interested, drop me an e-mail and I'll send you an invitation.

2. where do y'all get your appliques? i need a few, and have a good idea of what i want, but just am not sure where to look to find them.

3. i have a few swarovski fancy stones on an outfit that i need to replace. can anyone point me to a website or chart that has measurements of the fancy stones in millimeters or the like so that i can make sure i'm ordering the correct stones/sizes?

thanks in advance.

I love AB's and crystals, because they work with everything, but I used mostly Padparadscha AB's on a Watermelon color I did. With the center stones and pear shapes in Crystal AB. I wish I had gone heavier on the Crystal AB, since the color I went with, was unusual and I wanted a little more sparkle. I guess I can always add more AB's to the exiting pattern, but I'm onto her next dress.

The color I went with was a Watermelon you can see the color on the bow...the overlay organza was an irridecsent/ watermelon with yellow. (It's very hard to capture the true color in the photo...but really stands out on stage). Here are couple of photos for reference:

Low lighting to show stone pattern vs. actual color.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.editAlbumPhoto&albumID=1875219&imageID=34756783

A littel bit better idea of the color (The bow is a better idea of the true color).

I am entering my daughter in a glitz pageant. I want to make her dress since I have some sewing experience and I do not want to spend thousands of dollars on a dress.I have already made the top but all I need to do is the skirt, and I have no idea how to make one.I heard they are made of organza or chiffon or some other material,But how do you make the hemlines with the twist that they have? Help would be appreciated, thanks.

for the top layers of the skirt, cut circles out of organza. you will want to have 2 to 3 circles for each layer of the skirt and have 2 layers. i usually cut the circles at the length (waist to fingertips) plus 4 inches for the center hole (the waistline). the ruffled layers are gathered strips of organza attached to a circle underliner. you will need to fishline everything with a serger for the curly ends. this is a quick version because my laptop is dying lol

I have made them several different ways but use super stretch as your waistband it is easiest, stretching as you sew to attach the circle layers. You can stack your layers, meaning make your second from bottom two inches shorter and so on, all the way to the top layer. I recently purchased a narrow hem foot for my machine versus using the serger. The serger was not getting the hem tight and curly enough. Use a tight zig zag stitch, inserting your 30# fishing line as you roll your fabric. It took me several skirts to figure out what worked best. I am still learning so forums like this are great for advice!! Good Luck!

I will get some pics taken over the weekend and see what I can do to make it easy to send pics or maybe list them on myspace and provide that link so you can look, the xmas material I have is spectacular to anyone out there making xmas casual wears. I am a mom who pays either upfront, or in a timely manner for my dd's attire. I have ordered from the not so well known to the well known designers, and frankly, I'm getting tired of late orders, ignored emails, and disregarded deadlines. I am not late in paying. If I have a scheduled payment, I don't disregard that deadline. The designer receives her money if full or within a month. But it takes 2-4 months after I pay in full to receive my merchandise! I'm getting sick of it! I paid in full for a dress on July 27th, and my order is late. Almost a month late. The designer hasn't returned my emails in 6 days. This is after I got tired of waiting for late orders from another designer. Does everyone go through this? I'm the customer, I placed a very expensive order, doen't this amount to some sort of guest satisfaction or customer service? I run a business, and would I pull this at my job? NO Way! If I did, I wouldn't be making any money at all, and would end up losing my job! I am litterally begging for an order hundreds of hundreds of dollars, and being ignored! I don't get it!

I understand your frustration, I would be mad too. Not all customers are like you and not all clothes makers are like the ones you have dealt with. THe best thing to do is ask for references, lots of them. And to go by word of mouth. Nothing like getting info from someone who has been there. I know many dress makers that work full time making clothes and they sometimes run late and sometimes don't. Many times the most creative minds hate to be rushed and many times people are jsut irresponsible and that is tough when that happens. I am not making excuses for them at all, just stating facts.

I have been making clothes for several years and have never not met a deadline, ever. But I also have a full time job and do not take orders I can't fill eiter.

Good luck!

So true. You never know who is really making the clothes you are buying. Some of the big names do their own things but there are only so many hours in a day and when some take as many orders as they do you can bet someone else is helping out.

I am wanting to make a full tulle skirt. I have made one from organza and chiffon. My question is do you just gather and make a waist band or do you cut out pannels and sew together like you do with organza? Do you just serge the end or do you use the fishline hem?

You don't have to hem the tulle. Wrap the tulle around a fabric tube then slide the tube out leaving a wrap of tulle. measure the length you want the skirt and cut through all layers. Then gather the entire length. You might want to cut that in three or four then stack all together and sew. Put a waistband on top of that. If you want a lining, sew that on next. I cut circles for my linings as they lay better under all that tulle. A long skirt will take around 25 yards or more for a really full Cinderella look.

So 25 yards for a child size 6/7 or is that for a teen size?

25 yards is what I use for a skirt about 36 to 40 inches long. For a skirt that size you might try 18 to 20 yards, depending on how full you want to make it.

I am referring to the 60" tubes that fabric comes on. They are usually around 2 inches in diameter. The tulle has to be opened up to one layer and then rolled on the tube. Then slide the tube out and you will have a roll of tulle that is ready to cut. Most of the time tulle is wider than 60" so there will be fabric hanging off both ends. If it is 108" wide you can cut that in half so you will have two rolls at 54" long. What ever length you want your skirt, cut that many inches off. My point of doing it like this is, you gather one continuous piece of tulle (it will be how ever many yards you bought) and that keeps from having so many breaks like every 108 inches. Also the hem is already even since you cut all of it at one time instead of waiting till you finish the skirt. I know we all have different ways of sewing and this is how it works best for me. Someone else may have a better way.
Nancy

I was going to list on ebay, but was very surprised I was almost done my first listing said it would be 45 cents to list but for 18.00 said it would be a 2.16 final value fee if sold I was listing a few material in one lot with shipping included, so you figure 18.00 minues ebay fees is a little over 15.00 then ,inus pp fees and shipping tracking and insurance, anyways does anyone know where I can list pics of fabric so people can look at it, I have it piled all over the place mark with #'s so I know whats what to get it moved out faster. I have so much and I am selling it all at a reasonable price, need to make room for other things, thank you. Also have a brand new singer serger.....

Where is the best place to sell custom made pageant dresses? I am tired of trying to sell on ebay, by the time ebay fees, paypal fees, and etc. Also, I guess because I'm considered a new seller, ebay/paypal has put hold on my money on the past 3dresses i have sold and tells me to ship item immediatly. They only release funds IMMEDIATLY when positive feedback is left. So far, everyone has left positive feedback immediatly, but it is such a headache and stress not to have access to the money for a dress you have slaved over and sold. I understand the buyers need protection, however, I am an honest dress designer/seller and would not attempt to put something out there that looked or was sewed awful as it would drastically hurt me as a designer. Not to mention, you really can't make much money right now. I am serious about getting into selling/designing national pageant dresses, but aggravated with all the ebay hooplah. Has anyone else ever had them hold your money, and expect you to ship immediatly? Then you just sit back and pray for smooth shipping, and feedback so you can have access to your hard earned money.

I have the same question. Im,too, am new to the little girls dresses and what I have learned so far is EBAY istoo much like a garage sale. Everyone wants a bargain. You may try Etsy. It is a lot classier group of people. All items are handmade. I use Homestead for my website. You build it and maintain yourself. It is fairly simple and they take care of registering your domain and everything with one click. My site is www.pinkbiscuitsandchocolategravy.com and you get a 30 day free trial to build and work on it. Needless to say I need to add my dress photos but it is not too hard.

I think this might be a new policy. I've sold things in the past for just about the same amount of money as the item I sold last week. This time, however, I had the money put on hold, pending delivery confirmation, positive feedback, or 21 days with no dispute. It is frustrating to me because I was very generous with the buyer to begin with. It took her nearly a week to send the payment. It wasn't a big deal to me, but here it is nearly 2 weeks later, and the money is not available to me. The package was delivered today, but nobody was home to accept it, so now I have to wait until the buyer gets it picked up from the post office. Not only that, but it was almost $40 for shipping, and I had to pay that outside of the transaction money. I understand if ebay is trying to protect the buyers, but it's really quite binding to the occasional seller.

Thats exactly what I'm talking about. The dresses I shipped, I also had to wait the next day for it to be picked up because they were not home. Then, you just hope and pray they will leave you positive feedback. I just think thats a big crock to hold your money. It sure does not make me feel safe as a seller.

SUCK more and more with each new change they make! That is so wrong (holding money) on so many levels, that I can't even begin to imagine trying to do business on ebay any more. Ebay has lost it's thrill for me! It used to be fun, but not anymore! We need to find another outlet for our creative desires altogether! Anybody know how to set up a pageant items auction site?

Where is a good place to have a long skirt done to match a bodice that I already have for a short dress? I am probably more interested in a full tulle skirt, than a more pageant type of skirt.
Thanks!

I am wondering how much material I will need for a full cupcake skirt. My daughter wears a size 5-6 clothes. I think she will need 11 inch skirt. If that is right, how many yards are needed to make a full cupcake organza skirt. Also, what color stones will match teal green?

There isn't a pattern that I know of that gives you that information. You can probably get 10 different ways to make a skirt on the site. And 10 different yardage measurements too. It depends on how full you want your skirt and how you make your skirt/style. Everyone seems to do them just a little different. Some designers/seamstresses sew two top layers (full to semi-full) then one or two full ruffle layers with two rows of ruffles on each layer. I have seen skirts that have 2 semi full top layers and 3 single layered (semi full gathered) ruffles. And the skirt is actually a pretty full cupcake skirt (which is works for a smaller child) not sure how that would work for an older/larger size. I know none of this is probably going to help since it's not actual yardage measurments that you are looking for.

I have actually sewn a full skirt between a cupcake and southern style 2T skirt with 3 yards of organza...lots of ruffles. Turned out beautiful. But I have also used up to 5 yards in a skirt. Which was very full and very tight. I actually perferred the movement of the skirt that had the less yardage in it. (but it did have a layer of the lining material in the skirt too to boost the color of the organza I used) I can send pix to show you the different skirts (layers and materials I have used if you like) to give you a better idea of what I am talking about.

Hope it helped a little.

Thanks for looking,
