My daughter is getting married July 25th and we are having trouble finding chiffon fabric in the(pink)shades she wants. We are looking for "berry" shades, such as raspberry and other deep shades of pink/purple. She has 9 bridesmaids and she wants three different color dresses. Each dress will require 3 yards of fabric each. We have been to several fabric stores and can't find the colors we want. If anyone could help us we would really appreciate it. At this point we are DESPERATE!!!!

Trying going to this website to choose your colors - www.orioletex.com then call Mary Jo's ((704) 861-9100 ) to see if they have them or something similiar in stock. Oriole is wholesale and requires a minimum order of 25 yards per color but Mary Jo's usually has a pretty good selection of colors and sells retail so you can just purchase the small yardage you need.

I sometimes have good luck finding things at www.denverfabrics.com and they ship pretty quickly.

We are planning my daughter's wedding as well so I certainly wish you the best!

Can someone give me an outline on pageant skirt making?

How many under layers do you use?

How many over layers do you use?

How many rows of ruffles do you put on each under layer?

I'm making a custom babydoll dress for a lady and I was wondering if anyone had a list of measurements needed that they use on custom orders? It would be so much easier just to send one already made up instead of filling out my own, with two small kids it's hard enough finding time to sew.

Thanks so much!

I got it last august I just dont like it as much as i do my rolled hem on my sewing machine. Everyone is different I used it one time to practice on material, which is still attached lol, shipping is 25.00 cause it is heavy and even then I may have to pay a few bucks cause it will be insured and sent priority, but not counting shipping I will accept best offers its just collecting dust, and I need the room frankly for other stuff thanks.

I have 2 full MAC pigment jars for sale. Each was used maybe once(and you only need a TEENY bit of it at a time). I have Dark Soul and a very pretty shimmery blue that the color sticker was peeled off of, LOL. I believe it is called Mutiny. I have pics of both. Asking $9 each plus ship(which will be cheap).

Litsting on ebay tonight if no takers :)

Do several dry runs, placing the bigger stones and such with out glue, maybe even take a dig picture and blow it up on your computer screen. It's amazing how different things can look when you photo it.

would like to make a knee length skirt for my 10yr old, BUT cant make it as nice as what the fine sewers here make.
What I have done in the past is use a circle skirt (poodle skirt pattern, use the fold so there is no side seams, make it 3 layers, but just not full as to what I have seen. I am successfull in adding the fishing line, I just dont know how to make it full. And is it a pull on skirt or is there snaps etc on doing it up.
Thanks so much to whom can help me out

If you have a little time, My Pageant Kid has a great DVD on how to make a skirt from start to finish. You can google the name and purchase it online. Sometime she is a little slow to respond. If you don't have any luck, let me know and I can try to help you.

it isn't the circle layers that make it full, it is the underskirting. you have to make layers of under ruffles to make it stand out like a pageant skirt. kind of like a petticoat. hope this helps : )

The previous replies to your note are both correct. Layers don't really matter and pettioats are usually required. Here are a coulpe of other tips that may help. The petticoat is usually made from the same organza as the skirt. This makes it tough to tell what is skirt and what is petticoat. Secondly, the number of layers is not the key. It's the nymber of circles. One circle is not enough. You need at least two. One full circle on the front bodice and one on the back. Get out those math skills. You know, the one's that you said you would never use when you were in school. Good luck.

Lisa, I've been making tutus for years. If you are wanting to make a true ballet tutu you can not use tulle. Tulle is not stiff enough and your work with be for not. Your tutu will droop and look like it has been around for years. You must use petticoat net sometimes called diamond net. Tutus are actually not difficult to construct but they do take quite a bit of work. Feel free to email me if you would like to know more. Much to info to go into here. Greg

If it is factory pleat then you should be able to soak it with no problem. If it has been hand pleated you might want to check with whomever did it because it may just be starched and soaking would ruin it.

Subject: Dying Fabric - Help Please

Hello Ladies,
I have read the archives and searched google for a good detailed guide on how to dye organza and fabrics with no luck. I've tried acrylic paint method on superstretch, organza and bridal trims with poor results. I mixed my color, added hot water, mixed with a electric mixer, dipped for a few minutes, let the excess drip off and layed out to dry. On Organza I couldn't even get the color to take to the fabric without the paint filling up the space between each woven fiber. (Similar to what a screen looks like when wet).
If anyone is willing to share their technique in detail for dying fabric with acrylic paints, it would be a greatly appreciated by the many moms like myself who have been trying and trying with no success. It would also be nice to have it in the archive - I know many others would like to use it too! Thank you very much!

when I do organza or chiffon I make the skirt first. I than mix 4 bottles of acrylic paint usualy apple barrel. with 2 bottles of Fabric medium. add water till its about the consitancy or milk. Mix well as so it doesnt settle at the bottom. dip the skirt and ring out the excess. put in the dryer with a couple of old towels. dry on medium heat for 5- 10 minutes. take the skirt out and check for places that stick together or clump and blend the still damp paint in those areas. put back in the dryer till dry. if it it isnt dark enough I redip it till I get the shade I want. I have dipped several times. This always work for me, the only problem I have had is stiffness if I dipp alot.
for superstretch its the same mix but I dye the material before I make the bodice because the dye will not take in the seems as good. I have cut the pieces out dipped in paint and while it is wet stuck it to the dryer drum and eliminate the towels. it works ok but I think one side looks darker when I do it like that.
The hard part is the cleaning the dryer. alot of elbow grease. Good luck.

A giant hug to tnpm and Miss Debra for the response on dying fabrics. I've been trying to figure this out for over six months now.
I ran home after I got the message and figured I would give it another try. Hey why not? The Husband is traveling and it would be one of my few chances to trash the dryer (without him knowing) LOL. I started mixing a hot pink and pumpkin orange for a bright coral color. I used white lycra, bridal flowers and an organza ruffle I had laying around just to see how the different fabrics would react to the dye. I dipped the fabric 3X and the trims 2X and wow they turned out bright - just what I wanted. Now if only it wasn't so late, I'd break out the sewing machine and whip up a new suit for my dd. OMG I feel a serious fabric dying addiction starting coming on.

I can see that the key is having the right consistancy dye as well as blending during the drying process. This was my first time using the dryer (I had been trying to avoid the mess by laying flat) but realized that was part of my problem.

In the end I achieved good results on all of the fabrics but I am especially impressed with the ability of the organza to hold a color. I think that as soon as my arms get over the soreness of cleaning the dryer and my hubby goes on another business trip, I'm going to attempt Tiffany Box Blue.

Thanks again!
SNK

How dark did the coral come out? I am looking for like a deep coral color leaning more toward shrimp color. If any one uses nail polish there is a color made by O.P.I. called Cajun Shrimp (i think) that is the color I am trying to achieve. I want that pink orange tint to it. Can anyone help me with that color combination I am horrible when it comes to mixing colors.

Holly, my color is bright because I was going for a glowing coral color. A similar color swatch online can be found at http://www.colourlovers.com/wallPaper/1600x1200/c/FA5858/COLOURlovers.com-coral_kiss.png

The cajun shrimp color you mentioned appears to have some red in it, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get the same color with orange, pink and a dash of red though. Good luck! Please let us know if you give it a try

Call me crazy but I'm going to attempt to make a two piece swimwear for my dd. Kind of Jayme Shaw style - my dd is older.I've been sewing for awhile and figure it can't be that difficult. Should I get a pattern and work with that or just do freestyle? Also, what material do you think I should use? Superstretch or lycra and what weight? I'm going to line it.

Thanks

Yes I do start with a full circle pattern (poodle skirt) it depends on age and what type of skirt that you are looking for.

Im VERY interested in HOW to make the skirt FULL.
I need the skirt to be ONE length but want it gathered at the waist so it hangs with lots of gathers at the waist and looks really swingie,. If that makes sense, I do know that it has to be layers along with ruffles but when I do that it still only HANGS pretty straight.

Anybody Help and Understand me!
Thanks to all so very much

That much fabric will be heavy and hang long regardless of how you cut it. You can cut the waistband really big and gather it but unless it is a very small child you will be better off to make a fluffy crinoline or ruffly slip to go under it.

I'm here to testify that prayer is the ultimate thanks to GOD! The doctors said he'd never have a quality of life. They were wrong! He comes home today, a little worse for wear. But overall a million times better than I could ever have dreamed of. He still has no movement in his left side but will be able to compensate with total movement on his right side. And his brain is normal! Can you beleive that! It's been a long haul and it's not over yet. But I just awnt to thank all of my friends here who prayed for his recovery. We have been rewarded!!

I saw a cheap WW that I knew needed some work, but for the price, I figured I'd add to it and make it wonderful. Shame on me for not asking enough questions before I bought it. Anyway, except for the shoes and hat, it really isn't salvegable. Is there anyone reliable that can make me a cheap WW shell (I can stone and embellesh it) in a child's size 6 for cheap and fast? I'd like shorts. I know I'm asking for a miracle, but miracles sometimes happen on this board. Or is anyone selling one cheap in that size? Thanks, ladies!

I am trying to make a flare halter top using MPK pattern and cannot get it right! I have the front w/the front side connected then the back side connected to that and then the center back conneted to that. The bottom (hem) looks great all even. But the top looks like a jig saw puzzle. I have tried contacting Christy but have not gotten a reply back . If any one can help with this I would greatly appreciate. Thanks!

Then trim the bottom so that all the edges are evn, and then finish off the bottom edge. I did that w/ one of the computer generated patterns before. It worked fine. Hope that helps!

I had something similiar happen once and I had flipped the front side pieces. Because of the ease needed to form the princess seam these pieces can look like they don't match up to the center front piece but like the other posters said - start at the top and ease the arch in and it will work out.

If it makes you feel any better, I've been sewing for years and I almost always have to trim a little off the bottom to make the pieces match. I don't know what program your pattern provider used but if it is Child's Play those patterns are just wack and can be really difficult to work with even for an experienced sewer.

Thanks poster I gave up and made just the plain halter. But it worked out we won fashion! But i am not giving up on the flare halter I am gonna try till i get it! Btw it was bought from MPK. Just seems to me that each pattern could come with some type of instructions. Thanks all of you that helped

What is the spandex called that is just like superstretch but slightly lighter weight? I don't get to go to Mary Jo's often but I buy it there when I need a color that I can't get the jumbo in. I actual like it better for some things.

I would like to look for it on Spandex House's web site but don't know what to look for. It is a lot thicker than milliskin and is ribbed like the jumbo - just slightly lighter weight and about $3 a yard cheaper.

I just bought some of this on ebay to see if it's really jumbo superstretch......(200303344618). It's not what spandex house sells. Lighter weight, but still alot like the jumbo. I think I'm gonna love working with this fabric. Alot heavier than regular lycra, even the heavyweight (6 to 8 oz) kind. I haven't tried it yet, but am looking forward to working with it! I'm only making casualwears with it though. Not dresses. HTH!!

That sounds exactly like it but I still can't figure out which it is called at Spandex House. The Ebay seller refers to it as jumbo but I don't think that is correct.

I too like using the lighter weight for casual wears and bows. Sometimes the jumbo is just too bulky and the lighter sews beautifully plus it comes in so many more colors than jumbo.

I sold a dress on ebay and I'm trying to understand the way I got paid, if anyone can explain I'd really appreciate it.

I marked it needed to be paid within 24 hrs of auction ending, well that didn't happen, I'm o.k. with that, we finally did communicate after several days and all is good, I think. I just received the payment, but it says pending ship now. Now, call me crazy but I don't think it's a e-check, the bottom of the paypal states instant. But I don't have access to the funds for up to 21 days. Unless they can prove (ebay) that it's been received. I've never seen this before. Can someone help me understand?

Thanks in advance'

I'm sure there is more than one way to do it but I use either the sew-in boning or the boning in the casing. I sew the boning or casing to the inside of the bodice at the front princess seams, the side seams, and again in the back. Placement in the back depends on the style and size. Insert the bones in the casing if you need to and sew the lining and the bodice together as usual. Just personal preference but I like my lining to be smooth.

I have seen casing on the outside of the lining but it was done when someone purchased a finished dress that arrived with boning only up the front and it wrinkled up on the sides when it was on the child.

First payment of $100 gets them. There is well over $200 worth of stones here. I just need them gone.

My experience with satin is that when I tried to remove a stain I ended up with a water mark even bigger than my original stain. Ended up wetting and soaking the whole thing to even it out.

If you can identify what the stain is, post it and I can offer some suggestions. If not, I would reccomend a mild soap and cold water. After you spot clean it you will need to dip the whole thing to avoid the water mark issue discussed by the earlier poster.

If the stain is small, I would cover it up with a pageant related pin or other clever decor that isn't too obtrusive.

Who makes good shells? I have several orders I need to get filled and my shell maker has gotton very sick. I usually have 1-2 orders a week and want to pay around $100 per shell. (Custom made by measurements, halter or off the shoulder, lace up, zip up, or key hole backs) bustle and bustle bow and hairbow included. Sometimes I may need panty covers as well. I also need them FAST when I order them. Who do you recommend????

and you ask a designer to donate her time pretty much to give you a great shell for 100.00, so you can make the mula. That is not good at all, ss has gone up and for a good skirt it takes alot of organza if it we're a 0-2 yes that would be fine, but you would be screwed tot he wall if you had to make a 7 or 8.

Absolutely!!!! I make my skirts superfull and have alot of money tied up in the skirts and bodices, so basically you wouldn't be making hardly anything in the end. I agree 100%. I just stick to sewing, decorating, and selling my own and profitt much more, hopefully. LOL.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way when I read the post wanting a great shell for $100. I laughed and said "good luck with that one." Someone that can make and sell a GREAT shell for that price either has a different definition of "great" than I do or they are sewing just for fun.

Let's take a survey: How many hours does it take you to do a 9" super full cupcake?

She was just looking for what she was use to paying. I think by now she knows the bargin she was getting and will now have to adjust her thinking to a new price of at least 100.00 for a dress alone in a small size 0-12 months and 40-50.00 if not more for the accessories.

I was using 3 different shell makers, not just Janet. Janet has recently gotton very ill and can't work anymore. Janet, Sherry, and MD all charged me $100 for the shell bodice, skirt, bustle, bustle bow, hairbow, and panty cover, all dyed any color(s)I needed. I have found 3 more ladies that will do the same for $100 and one for $125+. I am happy with whom I chose to make my shells. thank you to everyone who emailed. :-)

I keep my prices low and do not make a huge proffit at all on my dresses. I have been getting shells for less than $100 for 4 years now, didn't realize the price has went up so far. $100 comes off the top of any dress I make. I can pay more, but have had 4 ladies email me and ask to make my shells. And yes, I would need the bodice and skirt.

For a little baby size I wouldn't want to pay more than $100 for a shell either. I know it takes a long time to make a shell but it also takes a long time to decorate and stone. Rhinestones aren't cheap and after purchasing the shell for only $100, rhinestones, decorations, ribbon, trim, dye/paint, glue, thread... designers aren't making alot of money from each dress unless they are a big name. Most cupcake full glitz dresses in the 0-12 month size sell for $250 ish (at least they are for me). Take out $100 for the shell, $100 for the stones and some decorations and that leaves a $50 profit. Just about the same as a shell maker would be making. No one is making alot of money right now :-(

I buy them at Wal-Mart. They are in a long tube and on the shelf with the heavier trims (like curtain trim). Sometimes they have them and sometimes they don't so I always a buy a tube of each selection when I find them.

Buy craft paint at either wal-mart or hobby lobby. Teal is a hard color to dye, but mix your paints to get the best color. I do this before I ever put in the water. I use a small stainless steel bowl. For 2 gallons of water I usually use around 4 to 5 bottles, depending on the depth of color I need. ( I use a hand held mixer to get a good mix so there are no lumps). Dip dry stretch in the dye water. Squeeze out as well as you can. I use one roll of Viva Job squad unrolled. Works great for the adsorption of excess paint. Put in clothes dryer and if not dark enough keep dipping till you get the color you want.

Ok Ladies...would really appreciate your personal opinions. I have a really pretty bright but not neon yellow mirrored organza, that I want to make a dress from for my granddaughter. She has a nice olive complexion with brown hair, and yellow looks good on her. I will be using AB Crystal stones and lace to match the yellow. My question...how well do you think Yellow dresses do? and how well do they show up on stage? I haven't really seen any, and not at our local or national pageant either. I also have been noticing that dresses that are pink and Yellow seems to get a lot of attention, but they are mainly pink with yellow accents. I was hoping to do a tone on tone yellow dress. Your opinions are greatly appreciated. Lisa :)

I have seen yellow on stage. If yellow is a good color on the girl it usually stands out. The last pagaent I went to the yellow dress won. GO FOR IT. I love yellow.

How many inches do you make the underlayer ruffles on a dress size 18month-2t? Normally I cut them 4" wide, but that seems wide for such a small dress.

Well I have a comment or two to make on the 100.00 shells. This is exactly the crap I am talking about in the pageant world, that has been going on for years, and thank god for the boards today, we as mothers, who cannot sew, ( I am not one of them), base our funds on how much something costs, how much time and effort it takes to find someone decent who sews for us without nickel and diming us to death, we are constantly blamed for nickel and diming the seamstresses, well well well, the tables are turned, good, I am sick of paying sky high prices for swimsuits and shells when come to find out they pay someone like us mothers to sew for them, shame on us for paying for it, I hope we take heed of these people and stop giving them our hard earned money, I for one feel obligated to boycott these kinds of people, right down to the people that sell the fabric, if it ain't fair it ain't right, now bash away if you want but I work to damned hard for my dollar, thanks for listening.

The debate about shell and dress prices has gone on on this board for years. You have those who sell $100 shells and those who wouldn't touch a shell for less than $250. You have those who sell "high" glitz dresses for $400 and those who sell them for $2,400.

Unfortunately everyone sewing thinks their work is top notch. You as the customer have to do your homework and decide if their idea of "top notch" matches with yours. If you are a newbie - don't rely on the advice of the other newbie mom sitting beside you. She is still learning too. Find the mothers of the children that win and talk to them about what is expected.

The best piece of advice I can give a mom is to remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch and if it sounds too good to be true you probably need to keep on looking.

Very well said. Just a note to add....If someone is willing to sew for less money per hour or per project than another seamstress/designer, they have that right, just as the other seamstress or designer has the right to ask more for her time and effort. And one other point. If a seamstress/designer is willing to construct a shell at a lower price point, often it's to another designer/decorater, and it's usually because of a certained quantity being promised to by. Very much like wholesaling. So please mom who posted above and sounds upset...don't think everyone is out there to rip everyone off.

Personally... I am soo busy with my full-time job, school, my own granddaughters, nieces and a couple of regular clients pageant attire I don't have time to sew a high quanitity of shells to reduce to wholesale pricing. However, when I do take new orders I put alot of time and love into all my work and it's not worth sewing/constructing a pageant shell or anything else for that matter for LESS than minimum wage. So if someone is willing to pay, what I am willing to contract out my services for, it's a win win for both. JMOA

okay here is a break down of what i spend/ make on a dress
dress material lace ss chiffon paint gas to get these things plus hours away from my family =100.00
stones =200.00
time I spend 2 weeks+ =200.00
total 500.00 for a 1500.00+ dress
I also take payments make my own shells deal with moms who aren't sure all the time take calls that last about 1 hour and always get the dress out on time or before I think I am getting the raw end of the deal not you I work about 60-70 hours on a dress and make 200.00 do the math :) now I have said what I needc to have a great day

to those upset over the prices of shells, I too thought the $250 plus I was quoted on a long skirt shell dress was high. I can sew (well i know who to run a sewing machine anyway). So about two weeks ago I set out to make my own. AND LET ME TELL YOU, I wish now I had just paid the $250 and was waiting for it to come in the mail. BY the time I bought the material, foots for machine, patterns, dvd to show me how, and other little extras you dont think about until you need it. I have spent well over $175. that doesn't even count the hours teaching myself the right ways to sew a pageant dress. I have three daughter and i'm a stay home and still will pay for a shell NEXT time. Thanks to those willing to make them for us. even at $250. I will pay that next time rather than go though this again.

Hi Ladies,

I finally received the fabric I ordered through Ebay from seller "Best Fabric Supplier" in Hong Kong. I ordered the watermelon and hot pink colors.

When comparing these two fabrics to what I buy from other suppliers, I would say that it is certainly a lower quality than what you get from oriole or some other Ebay sellers.

I'm sure I'll find something crafty to use it for, but I won't be using it for a dress. :( If anyone wants a sample, I'd be happy to mail one, just send me a message.

Dreamtime Creations 10 gross of 20 ss crystal a/b 76.45

Merchants direct price is cheaper, until they add the 18% charge on top. I think this beats them by just a few dollars but a bucks a buck these days. I will have my stones on Friday, I will post how they are.

Hope this helps some people.

I agree with the above poster. Merchants sell the crystalized Swarovski which are the best kind. I also buy from an Ebay seller that gets $90.00 plus $3.00 in shipping for 10 gross of 20ss AB.flat backs. He will ship very quickly and they are the same as Merchants. He is limited to size 20 and 16ss but great stones. His user id is danjan7356

I have never made a swimwear before, and have a question about the waistband and what I put around the leg holes. I have some swimwear elastic is that what i need to put around the legs? Also what is the best thing to use for the waist band? I am making a two piece. Thank you sooooo much for your help.

I was wondering if there is anyway to dye feathers. I tried dying a feather boa using the apple barrel paint method and my boa looks like a wet cat... LOL...even after drying it with a blow dryer :(. I don't keep stones in stock to sell but will order your stones from my wholesaler if you are buying full packages. I do a 20% mark-up for my time and trouble. You simply pay the wholesale invoice plus 20%, actual shipping, and paypal costs. Minimum $200 order but if you are doing 3 dresses that shouldn't be an issue.

Just email me if you are interested.

get the 800 number for the new jersey office. ask for anthony cavallero. he helps me with all my stones and is the cheapest i have found. you have to place minimum of $200 first order, then $100 every order after. i just ordered 60 gross of crystal ab swarovski stones...16 ss and 18 ss pointback and flatback and it was like $225-$250
