Where online can I find the loops for a laceup dress back? I can't find them-- I think I don't know what they're properly called. Thanks!

Most use the grommets. I am not big on that silver grommet look. Are you talking about this button loop tape? Dye it to match the dress. Link below:

I am taking a zipper out of the dress, so I don't think grommets would work anyway. Is button looping sturdy? I was in a lineup last weekend behind a girl who had a laceup back on her western wear, and the loops looked sturdier than this, like they might have been attached to boning. Thanks for your help!!

Yes. It is what they put on wedding dresses. It is sewn in so I don't think you will have a problem.

Some people use cording or ribbon and dew the loops into the seams and add boining for support so the bodice loops don't pucker(That may not be the correct word to use) the dress between loops.

I would add boning to the button loop tape so it would stay flat. Good Luck!

i want to dye some WHITE CURTAINS..to go around a model train board it has a western theme so the white was too much so i bought tan rit dye...i thought id tie dye or is there another dye method i am not too crafty.

also we have a very touchy septic system and do not want to put in a mound system. my husband is concerned that the dye may have an effect, i truly doubt it but i said i would post this question.
thanks in advance for the advice

Dyes can come out of fabrics in the washing machine, which I assume goes into your septic system (at least it should be) and this won't be any different. Hope this helps you answer your husband's question

I have tons of experience dyeing and tie dyeing cottons (gatsby9 on etsy), and first of all I would say Rit is not the dye you want. Rit dyes are acid dyes, which are for synthetics and have to be heated. The 'acid' part might be bad for your septic.

For cotton, what you want is fiber reactive dyes. They give great color and are totally colorfast. You have to wet the item first in a solution of soda ash powder, but it is worth it. So what you *could* do is rinse the final project outside with a hose, or take it to rinse out in someone else's washer.

As for tie-dyeing technique, there are tons, but the major rule is, the dye is going to be put on with a SQUIRT BOTTLE, not just dunked in some bucket. Anyone who tie dyes in a bucket, was never taught how to tie dye! I would be happy to explain more, just email me =0)

The best supplier for fiber reactive dyes in dharmatrading.com, brown dye in your choice of many shades of brown will cost about $4. I would get two shades and two squirt bottles =)

Thank you for the nice lift. I am doing quite well considering last year at this time I wasn't given much chance of living. I was hospitalized flat on my back from the middle of January to the first of June. Had to learn to do everything all over again. My daughter took us home with her to MN where we now reside. As soon as our property sells in LA I will try to open a sewing shop here in MN. I am really wanting to get back to sewing.
Once again, thank all of you that have written and sent emails. I really do appreciate it.

Thanks so much Lisa J! That information is so useful! But I was wondering (Anybody can answer this!)If I can cut some circles of organza and cut holes in the center for the waist.I was thinking of cutting about 6 or 7 circles with the holes in the center and individually giving them a rolled hem with 30 lb fishing line line stitched in.Then I could stack them on top of each other and sew them together at the waist. Is it possible?

The fullness comes from the number of circles used per layer. Then you gather each layer at the waist.

Yes. You can...but as I mentioned before you want to make sure to gather each layers seperatly into the waistband or your curls may tend to lay into each other. (Not as full). I generally cut circles with holes in the middle like you mentioned...But my "holes" are large so I have plenty of material to gather for layers. (then I am not sewing smaller circles (smaller waist "holes")together...no seam lines to deal with). For a southern style with a bit of the cupcake feel (if that makes sense) I do two to three gathered top circles with a solid fabric circle and one liner circle with two rows of very gathered fishline hemed ruffles. Again..I sew the ruffles also individually. I don't saw a large ruffle on down the middle to butterfly...because the ruffles eventually settle into eachother. It takes longer and you have to be more careful to not let the previous ruffle you sewed on get caught in the next ruffle seam..but the look is well worth the time.

For more of a cupcake style I use three to four very gathered (large waist) top layers with the same lining/under ruffles. And of course graduate the top layers apx 1" for each layer.

I have already purchase my fabric for the cupcake skirt and I heard from several people you need to cut out several large circles do a rolled hem with fish line on them and stack them on top of each other.I don't want to make a mistake because the fabric was really expensive.Would anybody mind sharing some tips or giving advice on how to do this task? I am making the skirt for a friend's 10 year old daughter. Her waist measurement is 30cm,if that helps.Help would be GREATLY appreciated!

There are several ways to make a pageant skirt. I have cut circles and then cut one side so I could sew two to three circles together per layer. My perfered way (only if your fabric is wide enough. You can cut a circle with a very wide waist measurement...then gather. You get the same affect if you add cirlce together, but you don't have to deal with seam lines. Just your back cut for an opening to the skirt and you can avoid that if you make an elastic waistband (But you need to watch out for bulkyness when making the waistband with no opening).
Important note: gather your skirt layers seperatly. DO NOT sew them toghether then gather. Your curls will want to lay into each other instead of standing along and on top of eachother. Hope that makes sense. Other important note: Once you have sewn our individual gathered layers to eachother and put the waistband on....leave the skirt to HANG over night.(If it's made of Organza or Chiffon) If you put the fishline hem in without letting the dress hang for several hours you WILL have an uneven hem line. Once the dress hangs over night or for several hours, you will see the biased sections of the fabric have dropped down in some places several inches lower than your original measurement. You can go around with a measuring tape, and cut the excess or you can "eyeball" it and cut to make even. It won't be perfect... a 1/2" off in places is okay. The fishline hem, will flip and curl didn't ways so you won't see the the slight variation...but you WILL see it, if you don't let the skirt hang first and adjust accordingly after. Hope that helps.

Is the cupcake skirt just basically a layered skirt? Do you take a multiple amount of organza skirts with a rolled hem and basically put them on top of each other for that full look? Help would be appreciated!

Yes but the lining layer/layers are super important...some people do 2, but they are a layer of lining with a gathered ruffle underneath giving extra fullness.

My daughter did her first pageant this weekend and won high supreme and best dress. I made her dress last week! I used panty hose to create the gathered bodice. I was asking if anyone had tried that...well it is super easy. You can view the dress on tiara talk.

In response to the above question, any lightweight organza will work to make a skirt. The heavier embroidered organza will not work.

Subject: Mix with water in a qt jar and shake. Then pour into dye container with more water. To dye SS it should be more concentrated.I dont add the stuf to set paint. That makes it spotty. The color will be heat set in the dryer.Just dip and squeeze out.Put in dryer with old towels.Take it out every 10 mins and rub wet spots back into the dry spots.Organza, take out every 5 mins. and rub good to distribute paint. Dip and dry until color is achieved. No spotting should occur.Paint mix should be a little darker than color needed. To dye organza the paint should be about 1 bottle paint to 1 1/2-2 gal of water.

My daughter outgrew her dance costume (too short) and I couldn't find anything I liked better. It was a one piece jumper that looked two-piece because of the sheer material at the tummy area. So, I bought a longer bottom (pants) and cut out the sheer. It is now two-piece and I think it shows too much skin. So, I want to add fishnet or someother type of sheer stretchy material to the tummy area to make it a once piece again. What type of material do I need to order? (The nearest fabric store is over 2 hours away) And HOW do I do this???

You will need to cut a rectangle of fabric on the bias, fold the top and bottom over to the middle, gather the middle, then stitch the middle to the center top of the bodice. Then put the bodice on your daughter, pin the edges where the folds look like you want them, fold edges over and whipstitch in place. When you have that done, take a good steam iron and steam the area and pat with your hands to lay flat, do NOT let the iron touch the fabric...I use sparkle organza, chiffon etc. This works for all fabrics...never tried pantyhose...

Hot fix stones simply have a heat activated glue on the back of the foil. You use a wand that heats the stone in the tip then place it on the fabric. Heat set stones can be washed and laundered and when they cool they are STUCK!!It takes longer to apply them because you have to wait 5-10 seconds for the glue to bubble but they are permanent.

Hot fix are great for T-Shirt Material, Jeans, and other hard materials...however be very careful....the hotfix application will burn right thru organza and other delicate fabrics.

I still have lots of things left for sale from my pageant sewing room. 10 boxes of lace and appliques, including lots of alencon lace from wedding gowns, large box of beads and acrylic stones of many sizes, shapes and colors. Boxes of pearls, different sizes. Boxes of large reels of fishing line, threads and cones. I have boxes of flowers, dangles with crystal drops. I have sold all my fabric, stones and some of my thread but there's lots of stuff left. First come, first served. Email me for lists (dshawn@eatel.net)

My advice would be to take advantage of all the free advertising like posting on tiaratalk.net or if people are asking for items on voy forums respond to them. Join some social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Also you can get a website pretty cheap ($10 or $20 a month) and maintain it yourself. I use Homestead for mine. Some designers do EBAY stores. If you need sales fast, EBAY can get you instant turn over but you can not make much money that way. Definitely word of mouth. Hope that helps.

If you use half circles on the fold as your pattern. Decide how many circles per layer and how many layers. Are you going to make each layer shorter as you go up? A good guestimate is approx. 1 yard per circle so if you do three circles for fullness per layer on a 6 layer skirt (5 organza layers + 1 lining layer), I would say about (3x5) 15 yards to be safe. Some people do 4 circles per layer. The bottom layer is the lining with a ruffle. You can get closer by knowing exact circle sizes. I start with one length and trim an inch off my pattern with each layer above it. Hope that helps.

I like the Czech Preciosa stones as much as Swarovski. Hot fix should not be any different as far as sparkle. They just have the glue on them.

When I set my machine up to roll hem (not the serger) it straight stitches the rolled hem. That is the "suggested" setting for using that foot. When you all say that you do a tight zig zag do you just set the machine to zig zag and still use the roll hem foot? I just want to make sure I understand correctly. I can run the line on my serger, but I don't think that is a pretty as a rolled hem and I want to learn to do it properly.

Thanks!

Yes, a tight ziz zag with a roll hem foot. Tip for the roll hem foot: Hold the back and front of the fabric. You almost have to pull it through. Also I found that the curl has to do with how full you gather the layers. I do 3 circles per layer on a stretch waisband.

I am about to make a cupcake skirt for my niece and I know that the skirt is made out of sparkle organza, and that you need a really tight zig-zag stitch.I tried this method with some thin fabric similar to sparkle organza but it did not curl as much I would have like it to.So I was wondering when I finally make the skirt and use the tight zig zag stitch on will the sparkle organza curl easily?

Did you use 30# fishing line? I use a roll hem foot on my machine with a tight zig zag and it works great. Sparkle organza should be perfect for a cupcake skirt.

Absolutely. The norm for pageant dresses is super stretch. However it's not my personal favorite to sew on. Many designers don't ever use superstretch. Superstretch stretches wonderfully around the body. Making it great fabric option for an easy fit.
I have personally used Bridal Fabrics, Cotton fabric base with an organza overlay. Sparkle stretch fabrics. I had a mom supply me with an "unknown" content type fabric, that was just gorgeous and was fantastic to work with. She purchased from a discount house, that worked beautifully on the bodice, and I have searched and searched and never found anything like it again.
So yes, many other fabrics can be used.

I have purchased 2 dress shells for my daughter, and Im getting ready to decorate & stone them. My question is for a three month old just how much glitz does it need. I dont want the dress to be to over the top so that it overshowdows my DD or is that important. and the other shell is for when she is over six months and Im assuming at that age that its ok to have more. I use to put my neice in pageants but that was years ago and everything is so over the top now that I feel like Im starting all over again. Also Ive been seeing these babydoll style dresses is that more in now for the babies than the cup cake style skirts. Any decorating ideas are welcome since I have no clue what Im doing anymore. Thanks so much I just know you ladies do this all the time and can help me.

JMOA: But the "Glitz" factor really depends on what type of pageant the girls are competing in. If it's more of a natural pageant where they allow "Pageant Dresses" (not just off the rack dresses) you may not want to go OVER the top, but still have plenty of bling. If it's a true Glitz pageant then you will want more bling. Oftent times the "Showier" the better. No matter what, you want to make sure the dress compliments the the girls and does not over power them. We have competed and been to a lot of pageants, what I notice what seems to be the most key factor in a dress besides a complimentary color to the child is "FIT". I don't care how much is spent on a dress, how "blingy/sparkly" it is...if it does not fit well, it just looks like crap. It won't matter that you have the most beautiful baby or little girl in the world,a poorly fit dress will take away from her beauty. And if the pageant judges on the attire, most have FIT as one of the criteria in that judging catergory.
Baby doll dress are adorable, and they are still a hot ticket right now. Once nice thing about Baby Doll dresses, is most of the work is in the skirt and under skirt with all the layers and ruffles. But the actual deco part of the bodice is a smaller area, so for a designer/seamstress and the pageant mommy it's less cost in stones and lace trim generally. And from a showing point of view for the little ones....you see the work put into the dress. For example if a pageant stage is tall/high, and the baby is usually carried out, for most of the time the skirt is pushed up a bit over the bottom of the bodice (if its a tradional cupcake style dress) and you don't see the work on the bottom of the bodice. However in a baby doll dress you get around the that problem, because the bottice is shorter, and usually mommy's hand is under the waist of the baby doll skirt up by the childs waist or on top, but still on the skirt...were her hand isn't covering the beautiful bodice.
But, which ever way you go....pick a style that best suits the contestant. Another easy way to decide. Our little ones, aren't little ones forever, and a baby doll style can only be worn for so long, you can always go with a standard cupcake later on.
But I have seen big winners in both styles of dresses on babies. Hope not to long winded, and it helped some.
Oh yes...one more thing...be patient and take your time if you have it. Lay your lace trim out on the bodice in different ways, to give yourself differnet ideas, if you don't already have a design in mind. Sometimes the lace pattern will help you finish the design itself.

It looks beautiful. Did you use just the new stones or did you mix with Swarovski?

Hi everyone, I have been sewing casual/fun pageant clothing for a long time and have just finished my first glitz one. It is a size 2-3 and maybe a slim 4. I have a few little things to do (like sew up the back of the skirt and make a little choker) but it turned out beautiful. The stones in the pictures don't show up as well as I hoped, but the overlay in the skirt has quite a few. I also have a separate under-pettiskirt that I will put an elastic waist in, but when I started adding layers that one made it just too full.

I will be listing this on eBay sometime next week after I - hopefully - get a small child to model it or am able to take better pictures.

You can go to

http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q57/maggiemaedesigns/

if you would like to see it and a few of the other things I have listed on Etsy. The little black and pink set with skulls is also available.

Susie

I have started carrying rhinestones in my store. I have some Swarovski but have found a company in China that I have been using lately and really pleased with them. They aren't Swarovski but an excellent alternative and a lot less expensive. I am working on a dress now that has these on it and will post that later today. If interested my ebay link to the stones is below

After over 20 years, I'm retiring from sewing pageant wear. I have a sewing room full of pageant fabric, stones, threads, fishing line, laces, ribbons, flowers and other things too much to name. I will be selling this at good prices. I have made lists of what's available. I can price individually or if someone wants to make an offer for the whole lot of stuff will consider that. Drop me an email at dshawn@eatel.net.
The D'Shawn pageant line will still be made, just not by me!

lolJust catching up on the latest post and I can understand what Tina is saying I am not even in the business of designing pageant dress but a while back i decided to give it a try. So designed my gd a dress and i was very impressed! First time she wore 3 ppl came up to me and asked how much did i want for it! Third time she wore it she stood on stage next to a child who had on one just like it! Same color and all! This designer copied the dress! Not once but 3 times!!!! My DD was furious! I found it a lil bit flattering! I guess I would be mad if I was in the business of designing and selling dresses!

I do apologize again to you, and everyone here. I had no choice, but bring it here as she was deleting me emails without reading them. I do not think any dress designer would be happy to have someone else using there pics as theres, and to hint she made them and I stoned them and tried to claim them as mine made me even more mad. But the pics have been removed I am happy. I didnt attack her personally, or her work. And honestly do not wanna get in a pissing contest with anyone, my husband left a few weeks ago for his second 400 day tour, and that is enough stress for me. Good luck in your search for a dress there are alot of talented ladies on this board.

Although I've yet to get a Miss Tina dress custom made, I've been fortunate enough to purchase 2 Miss Tina creations from a lady in another state. All I can say is that they are as well constructed as they are beautiful. I am a seamstress myself, but not nearly as talented as Miss Tina.

Why don't you worry about that new baby, your mad, and targeting me cause I called you out for using my work, sewn, and stoned by me as yours. And funny thing is as I was looking in archives I busted you in january of last year doing the same thing, anyone can look and see all the info on that.

I truly admire the quality on the garments. There are so many "seamstresses" out and about that produce shoddy products and charge an arm and a leg for them, leaving many dissatisfied customers behind.

Bias means at a diagonal. The fabric has more stretch that way. I use 30# line and make sure you have enough fullness. Also, I think a roll hem foot on a regular mechine using a tight ziz zag, make a much prettier curl.

Ok, the color came out great and I put the fabric in a vinegar solution and I am now washing on the hand wash cycle, but Oy Vey!!! My dryer is a disaster - is there any solution that will make it easier to get the paint off the inside of the dryer? If not, it is going to take days and either my husband will have to wear his tighty whities inside out or neon pink!

Please let me know of any solutions any of you have to this problem

A lot of us used to use Soft Scrub and good, old-fashioned elbow grease. I understand baby wipes also work very well for getting it out. Once you've cleaned it out well, don't worry if there's a little residual color left. I've never had it come off on clothes.

Thanks for the help! I looked on line and found denatured alcohol works - and it does, but the fumes are awful and it says can cause brain damage - which I really don't want. I will go try some soft scrub and see if I can find some old baby wipes.

Ok, I wanted to share this with you all. My housekeeper was here today and told me to use her Oxyclean foamy stuff and let it sit for a few minutes then wipe. It worked like a charm and way less mess than the soft scrub to clean afterward.

Now my husband won't have to wear neon pink tighty whities!

Hi don't laugh but I did this for years when my daughter did pageants, my husband worked at a car place and I would take the boots to them and they would spray them for me, now I have also went to walmart and bought the can of spray paint in the car section and did it myself, you just have to do small circular motions but I always had people comment on my kids shoes, I even sprayed patent leather white shoes purple before, trust me give it a try on a pair of old shoes first and you will be impressed.

I'll get some this weekend and try. I just went ahead and started painting really thin layers of craft paint. No peeling or cracking but it's just not covering the black at all so this sounds like it will do wonders! If all else fails, does anyone have any size 4 or 5 toddler red cowboy boots? Her's are old western brand and inside they say 0040 so I assume they are a 4?

You can try that spray paint they sell for shoes. My local dance wear store has it. We always have to paint tap shoes for recital. I have seen it at shoe repair places before. It does not peel like regular spray paint.

Hello! I make fantasy costumes and wedding gowns and would like to try my hand at pageant wear. My question is what is the top made out of? Anything special? And also same question reguarding the cupcake skirt. Is the skirt wired around the edges? I have a pattern, lots of fancy fabric and trims to practise with. Any advice will be appreciated.

I am going to attempt some superstretch wired flowers. I understand how to shape the wire then wrap the fabric over the wire but does your wire come out the bottom of the petal to connect to the other petals. Then how do you affix to the dress? I can't picture the center...

What are you dying? I always dye superstretch with approx a quart or even a little less warm water and one bottle of any acrylic paint. I don't add the medium. I dip once then dry in the dryer and dip again and dry.

Just got in a new sparkle organza that is 58" wide. This is not like mirror organza but looks real similar to the regular sparkle organza that I sell. I am anxious to make a skirt from this as I think it will make up great. Price is better than the 45" also. Have only 4 colors in as of now, but should be getting more later. You know it's about time for me to start turning my attention to swimwears!! I hate the winter months cause they don't sell that great! But I still am always searching for great fabrics!! I wish I could find the time to sew as much as I would like! It's been almost a year since my brother had his stroke (Jan 26) And it's been one very long, tiring, nervous, tedious and time consuming year. But, don't get me wrong..... I love him and would do anything to make him better! But look out this year, I'm gonna go at it full force! I've got so many ideas I can't seem to choose which one to do first!
I'm going to keep your hubby in my prayers...... He's what makes this country so great! And thanks for cleaning out that attic!

Material was not in attic lol, it was in sewing room, not that it matters just didnt want you to think it was dingy. Thank you for my husband, He left just a few weeks ago, and will be back late feb early march of next yr. So I get the full force this year, I have been lucky enough to stay busy enough last year, but this year I know there will be late nights due to lack of being able to sleep lol, email me your addy, and I will send your package today.

I need help making the skirt.I'm not sure how to make it. I heard you can use a really tight zig-zag stitch, but my machine's tension is not tight enough and it really can't be adjusted to go that high.I am a beginner, but I have done a decent amount of projects.I really don't have to worry about the bodice, since it is done and ready to be decorated.Does any body have any tips or instructions that could help me? And I dare you DARE DARE DARE you to set up a site with pics showing one thing you have ever made for me..... because I am very interrested in that, I didnt even bring nastiness here I asked you remove my work from your auctions. You have never sewed one stitch of anything for me..... There is a big difference between your style and mine. I dont care who you sew for, or what you do, I dont even care to bash or say anything about your work, I am asking you Miss Espinosa to remove my work from your site, or I will fax the vero pw to ebay, use your own work. I am for one glade you removed my work thank you, second I wanna say you got very ugly, I came her because you were deleting my emails. You were the one in the wrong, but I do have a question your auction with the yellow dress I think you should make it clear you are only the decorater of that dress, remember I made, sewed, and dyed that for you, and you decorated it. Rememer you could'nt get the princess bodice right, you couldnt get your skirt full enough compared to my work its a match, to yours it's not. I apologize to everyone else here, grant it I am not on the computer much, but I still sew, and I do not appreciate someone I once called a friend using my work to get thereself business. And cherish I really think you showed a nasty side to yourself saying what you did, you know I do all my own sewing I have never bought a shell from anyone let alone you.

Your funny...I was not using it on anything to sell, let me just say. I made my niece a "dress up" dress for Christmas, lots of sparkle was required. I never even thought about it being a problem. I read earlier to use wax paper on top of the fabric and tear it away after you stitch or liquid silicone. Sounds like a lot of trouble to me. I may just take your advice and stay away from it. LOL.

try a little needle oil that is also used for sewing leather I forget the name (Sorry!!)any fabric store would have it

Use it a lot esp. when you see the needle "gumming" up and go slow

I carry a type in my store that does not stick to the needle. I have made several garments with it and actually ruffled it for a swimsuit I made. Does not stick like the kind at wal-mart or hobby lobby. I have pictures of garments I have made if interested. My store is on Ebay and if you search under user id caddy200448 their is a category that is sequin knits.

Hi Nancy,

I am also interested in finding a better way or needle to sew this type of fabric. I went to your ebay site and I did see the fabric, but didn't see any listing for sewing needles. Can you tell me how much the needles are? And do you have them available for a Viking/Husqavarna Machine?
Thanks for your help.

You don't need a special needle to sew with this. I have actually used this on the serger. Just have to go a bit slower than usual.
I use regular Schmetz needles in a size 90.You can get those at wal-mart. Same one I use for my other fabrics. I use a Brother SE-350 machine (got it at wal-mart). I think the glue used in the kind I carry is a lot better grade than the wal-mart kind which makes it a bit more expensive. I make the cheer bows from this and have to sew to ribbon and never had any problems.
Hope this helps
Nancy

I made this outfit for a man in California for Halloween. I think he was going to be Michael Jackson. Anyway, I had to sew the lines of sequins on black lycra and that was a lot of sewing but no problems.

Nancy...gotcha...fabric is different not the needles..takes me a minute sometimes..ha ha ha.

I have used the wax paper idea before...works a bit better..but not much for me....my best luck so far has been actually using fabric fusable lining to the inside of the sequins fabric. Yes I iron it on..thru a towel...on a light setting. It works better than the wax paper and or doing nothing...but that application isn't always useable. Sometimes I don't need the sequins fabric to be lined or to have more weight.
